However, this becomes challenging and complicated when the flake size reduces to the micrometer scale, where the contrast spectrum is sensitively dependent on the polarization and incident angle of light. However, the high reflectivity of bulk metals results in low optical contrast (<3%) and therefore poor visibility of transparent mono- and few-layer 2D materials on these surfaces. Here we demonstrate that by engineering the complex reflectivity of a purpose-designed multilayer heterostructure composed of thin Au films (2-8 nm) on SiO/Si substrate, the optical contrast of graphene and graphene oxide (GO) can be significantly enhanced in comparison to bulk Au, up to about 3 and 5 times, respectively.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAim: Optic neuritis may be monophasic or occur as part of a relapsing demyelinating syndrome (RDS), such as multiple sclerosis, aquaporin-4 antibody (AQP4-Ab) neuromyelitis optical spectrum disorder (NMOSD), or myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody (MOG-Ab)-associated disease. The aims of this study were to test whether clinical, electrophysiological, and microstructural parameters differ in multiple-sclerosis-associated optic neuritis (MS-ON) and antibody-associated optic neuritis (Ab-ON); to identify the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of children suffering worse long-term visual outcome of RDS-optic neuritis; and to explore the relationship between RNFL thickness and clinical parameters in RDS-optic neuritis.
Method: Forty-two children with optic neuritis were retrospectively studied: 22 with multiple sclerosis (MS-ON) and 20 with antibody-associated demyelination (Ab-ON: MOG-Ab=16 and AQP4-Ab=4).
Background: Radiological biomarkers which correlate with visual function are needed to improve the clinical management of optic pathway glioma (OPG) patients. Currently, these are not available using conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences. The aim of this study was to determine whether diffusion MRI could be used to delineate the entire optic pathway in OPG patients, and provide imaging biomarkers within this pathway which correlate with a patient's visual acuity (VA).

Individuals with CH are at greater risk for hematological malignancies, cardiovascular disease, and increased mortality from non-hematological cancers. Understanding the causes of CH and how these mutant cells interact with cells of other tissues will provide critical insights into preleukemic development, stem cell biology, host-immune interactions, and cancer evolution.

Methods: Precut slides from tissue microarrays were stored under one of several conditions: exposed to ambient air at room temperature, 4°C, or -20°C or in a vacuum-sealed container at room temperature, -20°C, -80°C, or with paraffin coating. At multiple intervals over 1 year, slides were stained with antibodies against p53, isocitrate dehydrogenase 1, Ki-67, synaptophysin, and androgen receptor and evaluated.
JAK1 is a critical effector of pro-inflammatory cytokine signaling and plays important roles in immune function, while abnormal JAK1 activity has been linked to immunological and neoplastic diseases. Specific functions of JAK1 in the context of hematopoiesis, and specifically within hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), have not clearly been delineated. Here, we show that conditional Jak1 loss in HSCs reduces their self-renewal and markedly alters lymphoid/myeloid differentiation in vivo.

Design: A cross-sectional study including an analysis of all certificates of vision impairment completed in hospitals in England and Wales each year between 2007/2008 and 2014/2015 and all certificates completed in hospitals in England and Wales in 1999/2000.
Participants: Certificates for all individuals aged 16 years or less at the time of certification in England and Wales for each financial year between 1 April 2007 and the 31 March 2015 and for individuals aged 15 years or less for the year ending 31 March 2000.
Lung cancer encompasses multiple malignant epithelial tumour types, each with specific targetable, potentially actionable mutations, such that precision management mandates accurate tumour typing. Molecular characterisation studies require high tumour cell content and low necrosis content, yet lung cancers are frequently a heterogeneous mixture of tumour and stromal cells. We hypothesised that there may be systematic differences in tumour cell content according to histological subtype, and that this may have implications for tumour banks as a resource for comprehensive molecular characterisation studies in lung cancer.

Despite the prevalence of isolation-by-distance in nature, to date few studies have empirically demonstrated the processes that generate this pattern, largely because few populations have direct measures of individual dispersal and pedigree information.
