Saliva from female lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum, contained a novel phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity that hydrolyzed 14C-arachidonate from 14C-arachidonyl phosphatidylcholine. The tick saliva PLA2 (ts-PLA2) was active over a broad pH range (4.5-11.

Its purpose was to describe sleep satisfaction, pain perceptions and psychological concerns of subjects undergoing similar procedures but having differential contexts for their experience and different outcomes. Delirium is a common phenomenon following orthopaedic hip surgery.

In ixodid ticks the salivary glands are the organs of osmoregulation, and excess water from the bloodmeal is returned via saliva into the host. Host blood must continue to flow into the feeding lesion as well as remain fluid in the tick mouthparts and gut.

Post-transplantation bone disease is an increasingly recognized clinical entity whose etiology is multifactorial. The immunosuppressant agent cyclosporine-A (CsA) has repeatedly been shown experimentally to induce a high-turnover osteopenic state. Alendronate (Alen.

Patients And Methods: One hundred fifty-one patients with ovarian cancer (stage I-IV) were evaluated in a clinical trial of cisplatin (CDDP) +/- glutathione (GSH). The objective was to determine whether GSH would enhance the feasibility of giving six cycles of CDDP at 100 mg/m2 without dose reduction due to toxicity.
Prostaglandins of the 2-series (e.g. PGE2) are typically synthesized from arachidonic acid (AA) after AA is released from cellular phospholipids after activation of an intracellular phospholipase A2 (PLA2).

The effects of aerobic exercise training and yoga, a non-aerobic control intervention, on the baroreflex of elderly persons was determined. Baroreflex sensitivity was quantified by the alpha-index, at high frequency (HF; 0.

CsA is known to decrease serum testosterone (Test) levels both in the rat and in human transplant patients. Less is known of FK506's effect on androgens.

Twenty-one ovulating female monkeys (rhesus macaque), aged 16-20 yr (5-6 kg), were divided into four groups to receive the following treatment for 7 weeks via Alzet pumps inserted sc: A, eluant (control group); B, recombinant human IGF-I (rhIGF-I; 120 micrograms/kg.day); C) rhGH (100 micrograms/kg.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFOur laboratory has previously demonstrated that the T-lymphocyte is critical in the development of cyclosporin A-induced osteopenia in the rat model. A similar state of osteopenia is induced by estrogen depletion in the ovariectomized (OVX) rat, which is the animal model of postmenopausal bone loss. However, the role of the immune system, and particularly the T-lymphocyte, in estrogen deplete osteopenia has not been elucidated.

Anticoagulant activities against both the extrinsic and intrinsic coagulation pathways were identified in the saliva of partially fed female lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum (L.). The activities of factor Xa and thrombin in the common pathway of the coagulation cascade were inhibited by tick saliva.

Data on tobacco counseling provided by CD staff were obtained by telephone from sequential samples of smokers currently receiving alcohol treatment at each participating site. Intervention site clients with clinic visits after the staff training workshop were no more likely than intervention-site clients with clinic visits before the workshop to report having been counseled about their smoking (OR = 0.

To study true aging, mitochondrial respiratory chain function was studied in 9 young and 12 elderly athletes. No significant deterioration with age was observed.

Study Design: Glutaraldehyde-perfusion-fixed villous tissue and a plastic cast of the vessels in at least two cotyledons were prepared from 10 cases with intrauterine growth restriction and 9 gestational age-matched control placentas. The structure and dimensions of 20 terminal capillary loops per cast were determined by scanning electron microscopic examination, and their appearances were correlated with the peripheral villi of the perfusion-fixed villous tissue.
Prostaglandins (PGs) are oxygenated metabolites of polyunsaturated fatty acids, most notably arachidonic acid, that act as 'local hormones', regulating a plethora of physiological processes in mammals and other vertebrates. For a long time, PGs were reported only in higher vertebrates, but more recently they have been reported in lower organisms such as bacteria, yeasts and protozoa, and much information is now available on PGs in insects. Prostaglandins are increasingly reported to exist at the host-parasite interface and are thought to aid the parasite by modulating the inflammatory and immune response.

In advanced disease, primary resistance and inadequate cell kill may be important in determining the lack of a durable response to cytotoxics, but for an individual patient's tumour there is no consistent way of determining the importance of these two factors. An adaptation of Skipper's log cell kill model of tumour response to chemotherapy was applied to serial tumour measurements of 46 locally advanced primary breast carcinomas undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
