Sawtooth contrast sensitivity: effects of mean illuminance and low temporal frequencies.

Temporal contrast sensitivity was measured for mirror-image sawtooth (rapid-on and rapid-off) and sine waveforms for a 1.8 deg foveal target. In one experiment, contrast sensitivity was measured for 2-26 Hz stimuli at target mean illuminance levels of 5-1260 td.

A universal precautions monitoring system adaptable to any health care department.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed monitoring employee compliance with universal precautions, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Our respiratory care department, following a four-step system development plan, has developed and implemented a universal precautions monitoring system that is easy to adapt to any health care department. The results from monitoring can be used for educational planning, quality assurance purposes, and employee performance reviews.

Gazing into the future of esthetic restorative materials.

This article outlines the authors' perceptions of the future of esthetic dental restorative materials such as composites, glass ionomer cements, pit and fissure sealants and laboratory fabricated resin.

Hazards from hedgehogs: two case reports with a survey of the epidemiology of hedgehog ringworm.

Two related cases of ringworm caused by contact with an infected hedgehog are reported. The causal fungus, Trichophyton erinacei, was isolated from human and animal cases. The epidemiology of hedgehog ringworm is discussed.

Development of an adhesive bonding system.

Building on findings concerning adhesion to enamel, R L Bowen and his colleagues at the Paffenbarger Research Center, National Institute of Standards and Technology began addressing and solving problems associated with (1) silicate cements and unfilled resins, (2) bonding in an aqueous environment, and (3) the development of an adhesion system for both dentin and enamel that could withstand various stresses. This article reviews the development of an adhesion system for bonding dental composites to dentin and enamel.

Longitudinal effect of amitriptyline and fluoxetine treatment on plasma phenylacetic acid concentrations in depression.

Unconjugated (U-PAA), conjugated (C-PAA), and total phenylacetic acid (T-PAA) concentrations in blood plasma and monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity in platelets towards phenylethylamine (PE) were determined in 40 drug-free, depressed patients (23 melancholic, 17 nonmelancholic) from five psychiatric treatment centers, and in 34 normal healthy volunteers. No significant differences were found between controls and all depressed patients or between melancholic and nonmelancholic depressed patients. Treatment of the depressed patients with amitriptyline or fluoxetine over a 6-week period resulted in clinical improvement and in a significant increase in plasma PAA concentrations.

Transfer of technology to the dental office could provide thin polymeric coatings over tooth crowns and accessible root surfaces. These coatings can be prepared from relatively inexpensive, commercially available materials in one-step reactions. When the monomer technique becomes available, it will provide caries protection for all of your patients.

Effects of nitrovasodilators on platelet cyclic nucleotide levels in rabbit blood; role for cyclic AMP in synergistic inhibition of platelet function by SIN-1 and prostaglandin E1.

Nitrovasodilators increase both cyclic GMP and cyclic AMP in isolated platelets (Maurice DH, Haslam RJ. Mol Pharmacol 1990;37:671-81). To determine whether this occurs in blood, platelet cyclic[3H]GMP and cyclic [3H]AMP were measured in prelabeled rabbit platelets resuspended in modified Tyrode's solution or citrated blood.

Less frequent lithium administration and lower urine volume.

Objective: This study was designed to determine whether patients maintained on a regimen of lithium on a once-per-day schedule have lower urine volumes than do patients receiving multiple doses per day.

Method: This was a cross-sectional study of 85 patients from a lithium clinic who received different dose schedules. Patients were admitted to the hospital for measurement of lithium level, creatinine clearance, urine volume, and maximum osmolality.

Ciliary body malignant melanoma in a black child.

Uveal malignant melanoma is uncommon both in children and in black patients. There has been only one previous report of this type of tumor occurring in a black child. This paper presents the case history of a 5-year-old black girl who presented with a mass arising from the ciliary body and choroid.

The effect of catalyst structure on the synthesis of a dental restorative monomer.

The addition product of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), known as PMDM, is a mixture of two structural isomers. The para PMDM isomer--currently used in mediating adhesive bonding of restorative materials to hard tooth tissues--is a crystalline solid. The meta isomer is a liquid.

The prevalence of anxiety disorders among patients with mitral valve prolapse syndrome and chest pain.

Nineteen patients from a cardiology practice with complaints of chest pain and with mitral valve prolapse syndrome were compared with 26 patients with chest pain but no discernible cardiac disorder. Instruments included a truncated form of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule, the symptom checklist 90 revised (SCL-90-R), the McGill Pain Questionnaire, and life events, physical activity, and family history questionnaires. Neither panic disorder nor self-rated anxiety were more common in the mitral valve prolapse group.

A comparison of fluoxetine and amitriptyline in the treatment of major depression.

Fluoxetine, a new serotonin uptake blocking antidepressant, was compared with amitriptyline in a double-blind study. Patients were diagnosed as having major depression, according to DSM-III criteria, when interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. There was significant improvement in patient and observer ratings of depression in both groups, with no difference between groups.

A collaborative approach to nursing field placement.

The numbers of nursing students undertaking pre-registration education in higher education courses in South Australia has expanded rapidly over the last four years. This paper describes collaboration between Schools of Nursing to coordinate student placements in clinical venues. A computerised system has been developed which is unique in Australia and its positive results are identified.

The prevalence of overanxious disorder and separation anxiety disorder: results from the Ontario Child Health Study.

Data from a community epidemiological study of 1,869 families (Ontario Child Health Study) was used to evaluate the effect of different ways of operationalizing DSM-III-R criteria for overanxious disorder (OAD) and separation anxiety disorder (SAD) among adolescents aged 12 to 16. The authors determined that a high threshold for symptoms to qualify as present, the presence of one or both of the essential symptoms, and the presence of four or more auxiliary symptoms for OAD and three or more for SAD gave prevalence of OAD of 3.6% and SAD of 2.

Isolation of Tete serogroup bunyaviruses from Ceratopogonidae collected in Colorado.

Two viruses were isolated from ceratopogonid midges collected in northern Colorado. Electron microscopy indicated that both isolates were bunyavirus-like. Indirect fluorescent antibody and serum dilution-plaque reduction neutralization tests showed that these isolates were members of the Tete serogroup, most closely related antigenically to Tete and Batama viruses but distinguishable from both and from each other.

Neuromyelitis optica (Devic's syndrome) and pulmonary tuberculosis.

Neuromyelitis optica and acute necrotic myelopathy occur in association with pulmonary tuberculosis. We studied 8 patients with either neuromyelitis optica (6), acute myelopathy (1), or acute optic neuropathy (1) in close temporal association with pulmonary tuberculosis, but with no evidence for CNS tuberculosis. Neurologic symptoms preceded the use of antituberculosis medication in 5 patients.

The effects of methyltestosteone on reproductive function in male greyhounds.

Secondary localized amyloidosis of the cornea associated with tertiary syphilis.

Secondary corneal amyloidosis is a rare finding and only 17 cases have been reported in the literature. A case of unilateral secondary localized corneal amyloidosis is presented in a patient with bilateral interstitial keratitis and other stigmata of tertiary syphilis.

Cancer survivors' needs reported by survivors and their families.

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF), Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center, Oncology Nursing Task Force, and the Cuyahoga County Unit of the American Cancer Society cosponsored "EXPO '88: Recovering from Cancer" on the first National Cancer Survivors' Day. The day featured educational workshops, a fashion show, and a celebration of cancer survivorship. The needs of cancer survivors were evaluated by means of a self-administered survey of cancer survivors attending the EXPO.

Clinical biocompatibility of an experimental dentine-enamel adhesive for composites.

Previous studies have shown that sequential application of an acidified solution of ferric oxalate, N-phenylglycine and PMDM (the reaction product of pyromellitic dianhydride and hydroxyethyl methacrylate) yields strong adhesive bonding of composite resins to both dentine and enamel. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics and the biocompatibility of this system in human teeth scheduled for extraction in the course of orthodontic treatment. Controls were light-cured Scotch-bond or ZOE in contralateral teeth.
