Efficacy of different administration routes for vaccination against Vibrio anguillarum in Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.).

Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.) is a potentially important new species to cold-water aquaculture. Development of a viable industrial farming technique has been hampered by continued pathogen problems within the rearing cycle and there are several reports that indicated how susceptible juvenile halibut are to bacterial and viral diseases.

JunB negatively regulates AP-1 activity and cell proliferation of malignant mouse keratinocytes.

Objective: Previously we have shown that a malignant mouse keratinocyte cell line, 10Gy5, has elevated AP-1 transactivation and reduced JunB protein levels compared to its parental benign cell line, 308, and that the tumorigenicity in the 10Gy5 cells could be blocked by a dominant negative c-Jun mutant protein. We wished to determine whether the change in JunB protein levels could account for the elevated AP-1 activity and whether re-expression of JunB in malignant 10Gy5 cells altered their proliferative capacity.

Design: In the current study, we reduced JunB expression in benign 308 cells with antisense oligonucleotides and increased JunB expression in malignant 10Gy5 cells by stable transfection of a JunB expression vector.

A computerized social cognitive intervention for nutrition behavior: direct and mediated effects on fat, fiber, fruits, and vegetables, self-efficacy, and outcome expectations among food shoppers.

This study examined the direct and mediated impact of a self-administered, computer-based intervention on nutrition behavior self-efficacy, and outcome expectations among supermarket food shoppers. The intervention, housed in kiosks in supermarkets and based on social cognitive theory, used tailored information and self-regulation strategies delivered in 15 brief weekly segments. The study sample (N = 277), stratified and randomly assigned to treatment or control, was 96% female, was 92% White, had a median annual income of about $35,000, and had a mean education of 14.

Molecular characterization of Menangle virus, a novel paramyxovirus which infects pigs, fruit bats, and humans.

Menangle virus (MenV), isolated in August 1997 following an outbreak of reproductive disease in a piggery in New South Wales, is the second previously unclassified member of the family Paramyxoviridae to be identified in Australia since 1994. Similar to Hendra virus (HeV), MenV appears to be a virus of fruit bats (flying foxes) in the genus Pteropus. No serological cross-reactivity was detected between MenV and other known paramyxoviruses and to facilitate virus classification a cDNA subtraction method was used to obtain viral-specific cDNA from MenV-infected cells.

Susceptibility of juvenile and sub-adult Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.) to infection by Vibrio anguillarum and efficacy of protection induced by vaccination.

Experimental bath challenge of juvenile and sub-adult Atlantic halibut with Vibrio anguillarum induced severe mortalities of 47 and 80%, respectively. However, animals vaccinated with a commercial V. anguillarum vaccine demonstrated excellent protection against the disease (100% RPS).

Peroxide-inducible catalase in Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida protects against exogenous hydrogen peroxide and killing by activated rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss L., macrophages.

Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida expresses a single cytoplasmically located catalase which was found to be inducible by exposure to 20 microM hydrogen peroxide in mid-exponential phase resulting in a 4 fold increase in activity. Subsequent exposure to 2 mM peroxide in late-exponential/early-stationary phase resulted in further induction of catalase activity which increased to 20 fold higher levels than those found in uninduced cultures.

Buprenorphine versus morphine for patient-controlled analgesia after cholecystectomy.

Buprenorphine is an opioid agonist-antagonist that has emerged as an option for postoperative analgesia. We compared the postoperative hospital course of patients undergoing open cholecystectomy who received buprenorphine hydrochloride with those who received morphine sulfate. Patients in both groups administered the analgesic using a patient-controlled analgesia infusion device.

Evaluation of occlusion, trauma, and dental anomalies in African-American children of metropolitan Headstart programs.

493 African-American children between the ages of three and four years were examined for evaluation of molar occlusion with frequency of anterior and posterior crossbite, fractured and/or darkened teeth from trauma and dental anomalies in the primary dentition. Overall results from both age groups revealed 90% had a mesial step, 8% a flush and 2% a distal step molar occlusion. Crossbite, either anterior or posterior, occurred in 12% of all children examined.

Gastrostomy: operative or nonoperative?

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is clearly better than operative gastrostomy performed under general anesthesia. Whether or not PEG offers any significant advantage over operative gastrostomy performed using local anesthesia remains to be proved. Operative gastrotomy performed with local anesthesia seems comparable to nonoperative techniques.

Perspective taking and theory of mind: do children predict interpretive diversity as a function of differences in observers' knowledge?

In 3 experiments, children's ability to vary their responses on perspective-taking tasks as a function of the other person's age was examined. In Experiment 1,4- and 5-year-olds were shown to be accurate in their judgments about the knowledge of a 6-month-old baby, a 4-year-old child, and an adult. In Experiment 2, 4-year-olds were asked to determine if a baby, child, and adult would be able to identify an object from a restricted view showing either an identifiable part, a small nondescript part, or no part of the object.
