"How well do we know our patients?": Further validation of a complexity rating scale for HIV.

Background: Despite advances in the management and treatment of HIV, identifying risks for disengagement are essential to maximize positive outcomes. The current study investigated the validity of the Clinical Complexity Rating Scale for HIV (CCRS-HIV), a risk-prediction tool, by assessing agreement between patient and clinician scores of patient complexity.

Methods: 207 patients completed the patient version of the CCRS-HIV (CCRS-HIV), and six Attending Medical Officers (AMOs) caring for those individuals completed the original clinician version (CCRS-HIV).

Multiframe-based non-local means denoising for Raman spectra.

A method for denoising Raman spectra is presented in this paper. The approach is based on the principle that the original signal can be restored by averaging pixels based on structure similarity. Similarity searching and averaging are not limited to the neighbouring pixels but extended throughout the entire signal range across different frames.

Grating-incoupled waveguide-enhanced Raman sensor.

We report a waveguide-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (WERS) platform with alignment-tolerant under-chip grating input coupling. The demonstration is based on a 100-nm thick planar (slab) tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) waveguide and the use of benzyl alcohol (BnOH) and its deuterated form (d7- BnOH) as reference analytes. The use of grating couplers simplifies the WERS system by providing improved translational alignment tolerance, important for disposable chips, as well as contributing to improved Raman conversion efficiency.

A review of the leaf oils of the 13 species now recognised in the genus is presented. This review carries on from, and incorporates data from, an earlier (1995) review of the then recognised eight species. The leaf oils of two new species of , and are reported for the first time.

Implementation of non-invasive prenatal testing within a national UK antenatal screening programme: Impact on women's choices.

Objective: To evaluate the implementation of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) on pregnant women's choices in a national NHS antenatal screening programme for Down's syndrome, Edwards' syndrome and Patau's syndrome.

Method: An observational study of all pregnant women with a singleton pregnancy and higher chance (≤1:150) combined or quadruple screening result from 30 April 2018 to 25 September 2020 in Wales, UK. Pregnant women's journey through the pathway was determined including uptake of NIPT, performance of NIPT in a non-research setting and invasive procedures performed.

A cross-institutional analysis of the effects of broadening trainee professional development on research productivity.

PhD-trained scientists are essential contributors to the workforce in diverse employment sectors that include academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations. Hence, best practices for training the future biomedical workforce are of national concern. Complementing coursework and laboratory research training, many institutions now offer professional training that enables career exploration and develops a broad set of skills critical to various career paths.

Culinary Medicine Training in Core Medical School Curriculum Improved Medical Student Nutrition Knowledge and Confidence in Providing Nutrition Counseling.

Elective culinary medicine education has become popular to help fill important gaps in physician nutrition training. The implementation and outcomes among the inaugural cohort of medical students who received culinary medicine training as a required component of medical school curriculum at the University of Maryland School of Medicine are described. Following a series of elective pilot sessions, culinary medicine training was provided to all first-year medical students in the 2019-2020 academic year.

Waveguide Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Biosensing: A Review.

Waveguide enhanced Raman spectroscopy (WERS) utilizes simple, robust, high-index contrast dielectric waveguides to generate a strong evanescent field, through which laser light interacts with analytes residing on the surface of the waveguide. It offers a powerful tool for the direct identification and reproducible quantification of biochemical species and an alternative to surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) without reliance on fragile noble metal nanostructures. The advent of low-cost laser diodes, compact spectrometers, and recent progress in material engineering, nanofabrication techniques, and software modeling tools have made realizing portable and cheap WERS Raman systems with high sensitivity a realistic possibility.

The addition of spices and herbs to vegetables in the National School Lunch Program increased vegetable intake at an urban, economically-underserved, and predominantly African-American high school.

Vegetable intake is far below recommendations among African-American adolescents living in economically-underserved urban areas. While the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) helps overcome access barriers, vegetable intake remains challenging and novel interventions are required. A two-year, multi-phase, school-based intervention was conducted at an urban, economically-underserved, and predominantly African-American high school in Baltimore, Maryland to determine whether stakeholder-informed addition of spices and herbs to NSLP vegetables would increase intake.

Impact of a novel community testing pathway for people with suspected COVID-19 in Wales: a cost-minimisation analysis.

Objective: To compare National Health Service (NHS) organisations' testing pathways for patients with suspected COVID-19 in the community versus standard hospital testing practices.

Perspective: NHS commissioners and services.

Methods: During the containment phase of the COVID-19 pandemic we developed a community model pathway for COVID-19 testing in Wales with testing teams undertaking swabbing for COVID-19 in individuals' usual place of residence.

Evaluating the environmental impact of the Welsh national childhood oral health improvement programme, Designed to Smile.

Introduction: Designed to Smile (D2S) is a national oral health improvement programme, aimed to reduce the prevalence of dental caries in young children in Wales. D2S has a responsibility to consider the environmental impact of the service it provides and demonstrate adherence to the sustainable development principle legislated within the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act.

Objective: To review the environmental impact of D2S by estimating the carbon footprint of the programme and identify carbon hotspots for future targeted action.

Intradural extramedullary metastasis: a review of literature and case report.

Introduction: Intradural extramedullary (IDEM) metastatic disease is infrequently encountered by spine surgeons and consequently poorly understood. Discovery often corresponds with the onset of neurologic symptoms and no consensus exists regarding the importance of complete resection or anticipated postoperative outcome. We aim to elucidate treatment methodologies that exist in the literature.

The deposition of metal nanoparticles on carbon surfaces: the role of specific functional groups.

The enormous complexity of a typical heterogeneous catalyst makes understanding the development and properties of any active nanoparticles present extremely challenging. In the case of carbon based catalysts that difficulty is compounded by the variability of the carbon powders used. We have previously developed a strategy that addresses these problems by mimicking the catalyst preparation conditions very closely but using highly ordered pyrolytic graphite crystals (HOPG) as a model surface.

Translation of clinical trial data to changes in clinical practice: rapid transition from tenofovir disoproxil fumarate to tenofovir alafenamide-based therapies in a Sydney HIV clinic.

The transition of clinical trial data to changes in routine clinical practice is often a slow process. We describe a rapid transition of patients from one form of antiviral therapy to a modified and potentially safer version that can occur quickly when there are no financial or organisational restrictions on the prescribers.

Complications Associated with Locking Plate of Proximal Humerus Fractures.

Proximal humerus fractures constitute a significant percentage of fragility fractures. The growing use of locking plate has helped treat this problem, but at the same time has brought about complications. Past systematic reviews have documented these complications, however a large number of recent studies have been published since, reporting their own complication rates with different techniques.

A Summer Health Program for African-American High School Students in Baltimore, Maryland: Community Partnership for Integrative Health.

Context: Physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and chronic stress threaten the health of African-American youth in urban environments. Conditions often worsen in summer with diminished access to healthy foods and safe venues for physical activity.

Objective: A public-private partnership was formed to develop and evaluate an integrative health intervention entitled "Mission Thrive Summer" (MTS).

Nurse practitioner and physician assistant students' knowledge, attitudes, and perspectives of chiropractic.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess nurse practitioner (NP) and physician assistant (PA) students' views of chiropractic. As the role of these providers progresses in primary care settings, providers' views and knowledge of chiropractic will impact interprofessional collaboration and patient outcomes. Understanding how NP and PA students perceive chiropractic may be beneficial in building integrative health care systems.

Spice MyPlate: Nutrition Education Focusing Upon Spices and Herbs Improved Diet Quality and Attitudes Among Urban High School Students.

Chromosome Bridges Maintain Kinetochore-Microtubule Attachment throughout Mitosis and Rarely Break during Anaphase.

Accurate chromosome segregation during cell division is essential to maintain genome stability, and chromosome segregation errors are causally linked to genetic disorders and cancer. An anaphase chromosome bridge is a particular chromosome segregation error observed in cells that enter mitosis with fused chromosomes/sister chromatids. The widely accepted Breakage/Fusion/Bridge cycle model proposes that anaphase chromosome bridges break during mitosis to generate chromosome ends that will fuse during the following cell cycle, thus forming new bridges that will break, and so on.

Hemi-hamate arthroplasty versus transarticular Kirschner wire fixation for unstable dorsal fracture-dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint in the hand.

Following the introduction of the hemi-hamate arthroplasty (HHA) technique to our unit, we sought to evaluate the early clinical outcomes achieved with this method of fixation and compare these with simple trans-articular Kirschner wire (K-wire) fixation for dorsal fracture dislocations (DFD) of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ). Ninteen patients underwent fixation of these injuries with either K-wire fixation (12/19) or hemi-hamate bone grafting (7/19) between 2005 and 2011. Effects of vitamin E supplementation on exercise-induced oxidative stress: a meta-analysis.

Tocopherols (commonly referred to as "vitamin E") are frequently studied antioxidants in exercise research. However, the studies are highly heterogeneous, which has resulted in contradicting opinions. The aim of this review is to identify similar studies investigating the effects of tocopherol supplementation on exercise performance and oxidative stress and to perform minimally biased qualitative comparisons and meta-analysis.

Proteomic analysis of detergent resistant membrane domains during early interaction of macrophages with rough and smooth Brucella melitensis.

The plasma membrane contains discrete nanometer-sized domains that are resistant to non-ionic detergents, and which are called detergent resistant membrane domains (DRMDs) or lipid rafts. Exposure of host cells to pathogenic bacteria has been shown to induce the re-distribution of specific host proteins between DRMDs and detergent soluble membranes, which leads to the initiation of cell signaling that enable pathogens to access host cells. DRMDs have been shown to play a role in the invasion of Brucella into host macrophages and the formation of replicative phagosomes called Brucella-containing vacuoles (BCVs).
