Skin Color Match in Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery.

Objectives/hypothesis: To quantify the degree of color match achieved during microvascular facial reconstruction, and to describe a novel technique for improving reconstructive skin color match. We hypothesize that split-thickness skin grafts (STSG) placed atop de-epithelialized free tissue produces better facial skin color match than free tissue with intact epithelium.

Study Design: Cross sectional photographic study of reconstructed facial skin color match.

Hearing Loss after Round Window Surgery in Mice Is due to Middle Ear Effusion.

Background: Delivery of therapeutic agents directly through the round window (RW) offers promise for treating sensorineural hearing loss. However, hearing loss can result from the surgical approach itself, and the reasons for this are poorly understood. We examined the hearing loss following the 3 major steps involved with the RW approach to access the mouse cochlea: bullostomy, RW puncture, and RW injection.

Surgical Anatomy of the Eyelids.

Slight alterations in the intricate anatomy of the upper and lower eyelid or their underlying structures can have pronounced consequences for ocular esthetics and function. The understanding of periorbital structures and their interrelationships continues to evolve and requires consideration when performing complex eyelid interventions. Maintaining a detailed appreciation of this region is critical to successful cosmetic or reconstructive surgery.

The effects of residual hearing in traditional cochlear implant candidates after implantation with a conventional electrode.

Objective: To analyze the effects of residual hearing on postoperative speech performance in traditional cochlear implant (CI) patients implanted with a conventional electrode.

Study Design: Retrospective review.

Setting: Academic tertiary referral center.
