Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have become an established treatment for advanced heart failure, although with long-term support these patients are potentially exposed to serious complications. Our purpose was to assess the role of the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in LVAD complications and to evaluate if higher values of NLR after 4-6 months on LVAD support (NLR 4_6m) are associated with worse prognosis. All consecutive patients who received a HeartWare LVAD (N = 188, age 50 ± 13 years), as bridge to transplant from December 2009 to January 2018 were included.

Ceramides regulate cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis and are involved in cellular stress responses. Experimental evidence suggests a pivotal role of sphingolipids in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic stroke.

A decrease in the sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) blood levels has been shown in patients and in animal models of sepsis. The lipid mediator S1P is known to be involved in endothelial barrier function in a context-dependent manner.

While modes of action have been extensively described for human SAMHD1, only little is known about the regulation of SAMHD1 in the mouse. Here, we characterize the antiviral activity of murine SAMHD1 with the help of knockout mice to shed light on the regulation and the mechanism of the SAMHD1 restriction and to validate the SAMHD1 knockout mouse model for the use in future infectivity studies.

The online extraction is carried out using two extraction columns simultaneously and one analytical column. One extraction column is loaded, while the other one is eluted by a gradient.

Purpose: To determine the patient doses during noncardiac diagnostic and therapeutic interventional procedures carried out in a dedicated angiographic unit.
Materials And Methods: For 1,214 interventional procedures, the technique type, dose-area product (DAP), cumulative dose (CD), and fluoroscopy time were recorded. These procedures were classified into 23 categories (10 diagnostic and 13 therapeutic) that included nine to 259 patients each.
