The purpose of this study is to describe the incidence of early persistent pain (EPP) after VATS, which remains unexplored, to enhance patient care and promote awareness among clinicians regarding this clinical condition.
Methods: A single-center prospective cohort study that included consecutive patients undergoing VATS between January 2021 and March 2023.

Cardiovascular aging is strongly associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Moreover, health and lifestyle factors may accelerate age-induced alterations, such as increased arterial stiffness and wall dilation, beyond chronological age, making the clinical assessment of cardiovascular aging an important prompt for preventative action. Carotid flow waveforms contain information about age-dependent cardiovascular properties, and their ease of measurement via noninvasive Doppler ultrasound (US) makes their analysis a promising tool for the routine assessment of cardiovascular aging.

Background And Objectives: The evolving surgical techniques in thoracoscopic surgery necessitate the exploration of anesthesiological techniques. This study aimed to investigate whether incorporating a continuous erector spinae plane (ESP) block into a multimodal analgesia regimen is non-inferior to continuous thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) in terms of quality of postoperative recovery for patients undergoing elective unilateral video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.

Objectives: In patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for pneumothorax, the benefits and risks of single-shot intercostal nerve block as loco-regional analgesia are not well known. We retrospectively compared the effectiveness of intercostal nerve blocks as a viable alternative to thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) regarding pain control and enhanced recovery.
Methods: A retrospective multicentre analysis with single-centre propensity score matching was performed in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for pneumothorax receiving either TEA or intercostal nerve block.
Effective capacity management of operation rooms is key to avoid surgery cancellations and prevent long waiting lists that negatively affect clinical and financial outcomes as well as patient and staff satisfaction. This requires optimal surgery scheduling, leveraging essential parameters like surgery duration, post-operative bed type and hospital length-of-stay. Common clinical practice is to use the surgeon's average procedure time of the last N patients as a planned surgery duration for the next patient.

Methods: A prospective observational trial was performed in patients following bariatric or major abdominal cancer surgery. A wireless accelerometer patch (Healthdot) continuously measured postoperative heart rate, both in the hospital and after discharge, for a period of 14 days.
Background: There is still room for improvement of pain management after spinal surgery. The goal of this study was to evaluate adding the erector spinae block to the standard analgesia regimen. Our hypothesis was that the erector spinae plane block will decrease length of hospital stay, reduce opioid need and improve numeric rating scale pain scores.

However, recovery is difficult to assess and challenging to predict, as no universally accepted definition exists. Different pressure-based techniques are available to estimate this inspiratory effort at the bedside, but the accuracy of their effort estimation is uncertain since they are all based on a simplified linear model of the respiratory system, which omits gas compressibility of air, and the viscoelasticity and nonlinearities of the respiratory system. The aim of this in-silico study was to provide an overview of the pressure-based estimation techniques and to evaluate their accuracy using a more sophisticated model of the respiratory system and ventilator.
