TOWARDS DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABLE FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: An Initiative of an American Medical School in Lebanon.

Introduction And Objectives: The American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine (AUB-FM) strategy is to develop faculty members (fm) skills by sponsoring local and international scientific activities has been in place for over three decades, and remains dependent on individuals' efforts. In 2011-2012, Faculty Development Program (FDP) was introduced to develop faculty leadership, business skills in medicine, fulfill personal and professional goals, followed by a five-year plan to cover five themes: Management/Leadership, Marketing, Finance, Strategic Planning and Communications with the purpose of integrating these themes in medical practice.

Methods: A survey was sent to all departments at AUB-FM in 2011 to assess needs and determine themes.

Cancer incidence in postwar Lebanon: findings from the first national population-based registry, 1998.

Purpose: Cancer incidence rates in Lebanon have been lacking for over three decades. National data based on a total of 4388 cases diagnosed during the year 1998 were reviewed and analyzed.

Methods: Crude and age-standardized rates (ASRs) per 100,000 population were calculated and results were contrasted with estimates from developed and selected developing countries in the region.

Prevalence and covariates of obesity in Lebanon: findings from the first epidemiological study.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and examine associated covariates in the Lebanese population.

Ethnic differences in weight loss behavior among secondary school students in Beirut: the role of weight perception.

Objectives: Assessing the prevalence of weight loss attempts in Beirut, Lebanon, a country characterized by a diversity of ethnic and religious groups and examining the interplay between ethnicity, body mass index (BMI) and weight perception and their relationship to weight loss behavior.

Age distribution of breast cancer in Lebanon: increased percentages and age adjusted incidence rates of younger-aged groups at presentation.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Lebanese women. Lebanon has no national cancer registry and the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) is one of the largest hospitals in Lebanon and has a fully operational cancer registry. Earlier studies showed that it sees about one third of all cancer cases in Lebanon.
