Management of alar webbing using a CAD-CAM splint: A case report.

Alar webbing is a functional and aesthetic defect of the nasal structure noted in cleft lip and palate patients (CLP), which is thought to be due to a deficiency in nasal lining tissue. Surgical procedures have previously focused on the removal of lining or alar cartilage leading to worse post-operative defects. This case demonstrates a novel technique of releasing the tissue, followed by using a CAD-CAM splint to help mold the tissue during the healing process to better control esthetics, symmetry, and prevent relapse.

Interdisciplinary paleovegetation study in the Fernando de Noronha Island (Pernambuco State), northeastern Brazil.

The aim of this research was to reconstruct vegetation changes (with climate inferences) that occurred during the Holocene in the Fernando de Noronha Island, Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil. The research approach included the use of geochemical (mineralogy, elemental), carbon isotopes (delta13C, 14C) and pollen analyses in soil organic matter (SOM) and sediments collected in Lagoa da Viração and Manguezal do Sueste. The carbon isotopes data of SOM indicated that there was no significant vegetation changes during the last 7400 BP, suggesting that the climate was not the determinant factor for the vegetation dynamics.

Mercury fluxes in a natural forested Amazonian catchment (Serra do Navio, Amapá State, Brazil).

Mercury (Hg total) fluxes were calculated for rainwater, throughfall and stream water in a small catchment located in the northeastern region of the Brazilian Amazon (Serra do Navio, Amapá State), whose upper part is covered by a natural rainforest and lower part was altered due to deforestation and activities related to manganese mining. A new method of bromine number determination appropriate to heavy-ends petroleum is reported. This method, which uses an electrochemical titration and tetrabutylammonium tribromide as reagent, has been tested on Boscan atmospheric residues.
