Background: Current asthma consensus guidelines recommend a series of criteria for determining whether asthma is controlled. It is not known whether physicians are using these criteria to assess treatment needs and how effective such assessments are compared with patient assessment of asthma control.
Objective: To compare the parameters used by physicians and patients with asthma to determine whether asthma control is acceptable, according to the current Canadian asthma consensus guidelines.
Oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and hyperhomocysteinemia are believed to play a role in therogenesis. Whether n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids increase LDL susceptibility to oxidation or influence homocysteine (Hcy) metabolism has long been a subject of controversy. In this study, we evaluated the effect of 8 weeks of dietary supplementation with 6 g/day of fish oil (FO; 3 g of n-3 fatty acids) on plasma lipoproteins, in vitro LDL peroxidation, antioxidant status, and plasma Hcy concentrations in 16 normolipidemic subjects.

Sputum eosinophilia has been suggested as a predictor of the response to inhaled corticosteroids in asthma. This study sought to investigate the proportion of steroid-naive uncontrolled asthmatics without significant sputum eosinophilia (< or = 1%) and to examine whether sputum eosinophilia could predict the response to inhaled corticosteroids.

Study Objectives: This report describes a new method to quantify asthma control based on a percentage score.
Background: Low-dose allergen challenge (LDAC) may be a useful tool for studying the capacity of allergens to induce airway inflammation in atopic subjects.
Objective: To evaluate lower airway inflammatory changes following repeated inhalation of very low doses of allergen (VLDAC) in non-asthmatic subjects with allergic rhinitis (NAAR) compared with mild allergic asthmatic subjects (AA).
Methods: Fourteen NAAR and 11 AA were seen out of the pollen season and had skin prick tests with common aeroallergens.
Background: Atopy may be a risk factor in the development of asthma. Indoor allergens are considered to be more potent asthma inducers than outdoor ones such as pollens. Lower airway inflammation may be present in non-asthmatic subjects during natural exposure to relevant allergens and may eventually lead to the development of asthma.

Amongst the many physiopathological roles attributed to endothelins (ETs), one is to modulate pulmonary functions. It is established that Balb/c mice develop allergen-induced Th(2)-cytokine gene expression, airway inflammation and hyper-responsiveness whereas C57Bl/6 mice are much less reactive.

Others have reported that antibodies for DIISO-HSA are specific but insensitive markers of DA. This study was performed to evaluate test characteristics of the in vitro MCP-1 assay compared with DIISO-HSA-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgE in identifying workers with DA.

Proteoglycans determine tissue mechanical properties and are involved in many important biological aspects. Not surprisingly, it has been suggested that proteoglycan deposition may alter airway properties in asthma including airway hyperresponsiveness.

Towards Excellence in Asthma Management (TEAM) is a four-phase disease management program of the Quebec Asthma Education Network (QAEN), to be carried out over a 5-year period. The program aims to achieve a continuous improvement of asthma management by caregivers and patients.

Using TNF-alpha as a biomarker, we have developed transcription-based assays to examine inhibition of PDE4 activity in human and guinea pig whole blood. In vitro inhibition by PDE4 inhibitors was measured using quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis of TNF-alpha mRNA levels in whole blood stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

Objective: To determine if failure of asthma to clinically improve with CS is due to a defective response of airway bronchial inflammation to these drugs.
Methods: Twenty-one asthmatics having a decreased baseline FEV1 that improved >or= 30% with inhaled beta2 agonist got bronchial biopsies before and at the end of an oral CS treatment (methylprednisolone 40 mg daily for 14 days).
Objective: To establish the number and type of asthma patient education programs throughout Canada.
Design: National survey.
Setting: Canada.
Pre-clinical and clinical studies are currently underway to evaluate the potential of phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitors for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other inflammatory conditions of the airways. The most common side effect associated with this class of compounds is emesis. The squirrel monkey provides a model for evaluating the efficacy of PDE4 inhibitors and their emetic potential.

Inconsistent results about the latter have been reported in hypertriglyceridemic individuals. After incorporation into cell membranes, n-3 fatty acids may alter membrane-related functions.

Factors potentially predisposing athletes to these conditions have not been clearly identified. Although moderate exercise has been shown to be beneficial in patients with asthma, repeated high-intensity exercise could possibly contribute to the development of asthma and AHR.

Subjects And Methods: Resting electrocardiograms and heart rate variability measurements were performed separately during a single visit on 100 athletes and 50 nonathlete control subjects aged 18 to 55 years. The athletes were from the following various sports disciplines: long-distance running, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, biathlon, speed skating, swimming and triathlon.
Asthma education decreases the number of emergency visits in specific subgroups of patients with asthma. However, it remains unknown whether this improvement is related only to the use of an action plan alone or to other components of the educational intervention. A total of 126 patients consulting urgently for an acute asthma exacerbation were recruited; 98 completed the study.
