Background: Treatment of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) largely involves surgical excision. Few studies have examined oncologic outcomes of tumors managed by watchful waiting (WW) when the lesion appears resolved after the biopsy site has healed.

Objective: To describe oncologic outcomes for patients diagnosed with cSCC that was determined clinically resolved at follow-up and subsequently managed by WW.

Reallocations of Time Between Sleep, Sedentary Behavior, and Physical Activity and their Associations with 24-Hour Blood Pressure.

Background: The 24-hour activity cycle (sleep, sedentary behavior, light physical activity, moderate to vigorous physical activity) may have deleterious or beneficial associations with 24-hour blood pressure.

Purpose: Estimate the short-term associated changes in 24H-BP with acutely replacing 30 min/d from one behavior of the 24H-ACT to other behaviors in employed adults.

Methods: Participants (N=659) wore an ambulatory blood pressure monitor and two accelerometers (waist and wrist) to measure 24-hour blood pressure and the 24-hour activity cycle.

Objective: The primary objective was to identify veterinary workforce characteristics and factors contributing to staying in or leaving a veterinary practice. A secondary objective was to compare workforce characteristics and factors related to retention between survey respondents working in rural versus nonrural areas.

Methods: Veterinarians were surveyed via a questionnaire distributed with the use of a state veterinary medical association listserv or veterinary program alumni listserv from February 2022 to January 2023 and social media postings on X (formerly known as Twitter) and Facebook in April 2022.

Increasing interest in measuring key components of the 24 h activity cycle (24-HAC) [sleep, sedentary behavior (SED), light physical activity (LPA), and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA)] has led to a need for better methods. Single wrist-worn accelerometers and different self-report instruments can assess the 24-HAC but may not accurately classify time spent in the different components or be subject to recall errors..

Sedentary behavior and risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality in United States adults with hypertension.

Background: Growing evidence has implicated sedentary behavior is associated with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, independent of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Contrary to national physical activity guidelines, reductions in sedentary behavior are not promoted as a lifestyle modification in hypertensive adults. This may be in part because of a paucity of evidence demonstrating that sedentary behavior confers morbidity and mortality risk in hypertensive adults.

Agreement between Fitbit and ActiGraph Estimates of Physical Activity in Young Children.

Physical activity (PA) estimates from the Fitbit Flex 2 were compared to those from the ActiGraph GT9X Link in 123 elementary school children. Steps and intensity-specific estimates of PA and 3-month PA change were calculated using two different ActiGraph cut-points (Evenson and Romanzini). Fitbit estimates were 35% higher for steps compared to the ActiGraph.

Neoplastic signatures: Comparative proteomics of canine hepatobiliary neuroendocrine tumors to normal niche tissue.

Hepatobiliary neuroendocrine neoplasms are rare cancers in humans and dogs. To date, no large-scale primary hepatobiliary neoplasm omics analyses exist in any species. This limits the development of diagnostic biomarkers and targeted therapeutics.

Characteristics of ulcerated and non-ulcerated necrobiosis lipoidica.

Background: Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is complicated by ulceration in up to 35% of cases.

Methods: Retrospective study of patients with NL seen at our institution between January 1, 1992, and May 25, 2021, was conducted. Ulcerated NL (UNL, n = 83) and non-ulcerated NL (NUNL, n = 233) groups were compared.

Hyphema and secondary glaucoma as a presenting complaint in a dog with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

A 5-year-old Pomeranian was diagnosed with anterior uveitis, hyphema, and secondary glaucoma OD. Concurrent retinal hemorrhage, perivascular sheathing, and papilledema were identified OS. Work-up identified small cell lymphocytosis (>900 × 10/L), anemia, and thrombocytopenia.

Secukinumab for the treatment of adult-onset pityriasis rubra pilaris: a single-arm clinical trial with transcriptomic analysis.

Background: The pathogenesis of pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is not completely understood, but interleukin (IL)-17 has been shown to play a critical role. There are no reliable immunomodulatory agents to treat PRP. We conducted an open-label, single-arm clinical trial of secukinumab, a monoclonal antibody that inhibits IL-17A, for the treatment of PRP.

Factors associated with successful passage of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine general examination.

Background: Board certification relies on passing the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) general examination. Pass rates might depend on properties of residency training programs (RTP).

Hypothesis: We hypothesized that <4 weeks of dedicated study time, lack of board preparation lectures, status as a re-taker, and private practice RTP would result in lower pass rates of the ACVIM general examination.

Histopathologic features of necrobiosis lipoidica.

Background: Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is an uncommon granulomatous dermatosis that can occur in patients with or without associated diabetes mellitus (DM). Prior studies have attempted to determine distinctive histopathologic features of NL in patients with and without DM.

Methods: A retrospective review of 97 patients with NL was performed to determine the similar and distinctive histopathologic features in patients with DM and without DM.

Feline mesothelioma: case report and review of cytologic, immunocytochemical, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical findings.

Mesotheliomas are uncommon neoplasms that arise from mesothelial cells in either the abdominal or thoracic cavities and are rarely diagnosed in cats. A 10-y-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented to the Louisiana State University oncology service for evaluation of a large amount of abdominal effusion. Abdominal ultrasound identified a large mesenteric mass with numerous ill-defined nodules.

Thyroid storm in a dog secondary to thyroid carcinoma.

Objective: To describe the clinical presentation, clinical course, and management of a dog with thyroid storm (TS) secondary to a functional thyroid carcinoma.

Case Summary: A 12-year-old neutered female Golden Retriever was evaluated for severe weight loss, hyperthermia, and tachycardia. The dog had a ventral neck mass and markedly increased thyroxine concentration.
