The dendrochemical approach holds significant promise for determining the geographical origin of wood as a complementary tool to dendroprovenancing based on tree-ring width. Tracing the origin of wood based on its elemental and isotopic composition is in particular interesting for provenance studies at the regional scale, as dendrochemical signatures are indicative of geological and pedological characteristics. Although, absorption of nutrients and trace elements reflects the composition of soil bioavailable pools, it is also modulated by multiple environmental and tree related factors.

Late Neoproterozoic seawater oxygenation by siliceous sponges.

The Cambrian explosion, the rapid appearance of most animal phyla in the geological record, occurred concurrently with bottom seawater oxygenation. Whether this oxygenation event was triggered through enhanced nutrient supply and organic carbon burial forced by increased continental weathering, or by species engaging in ecosystem engineering, remains a fundamental yet unresolved question. Here we provide evidence for several simultaneous developments that took place over the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition: expansion of siliceous sponges, decrease of the dissolved organic carbon pool, enhanced organic carbon burial, increased phosphorus removal and seawater oxygenation.

The Utah criteria were devised in the 1970s to help a retrospective diagnosis of ADHD during childhood, a necessary but not sufficient condition for diagnosing ADHD at adulthood. A sample of 466 adults was collected from a referral center and a large university.

Inattentive symptoms of ADHD are related to evening orientation.

Objective: Morningness is a stable characteristic of individuals, related to impulsivity and novelty seeking. The evening orientation is a risk factor for psychiatric conditions such as depression and personality disorders. The authors hypothesized that adults suspected of having ADHD are more evening oriented than adults without ADHD.

We performed an improved search for nu(mu) --> nu(e) oscillation with the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, using the full data sample of 9.2 x 10(19) protons on target. No evidence for a nu(e) appearance signal was found, and we set bounds on the nu(mu) --> nu(e) oscillation parameters.

We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment.

This article describes a new method for the early detection of alcoholic fermentation arrest. This methodology is based on the flow cytometric assessment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts stained with a carboxyfluorescein diacetate fluorescent viability probe. Multicomponent analysis of viable cell distribution constitutes a promising new tool to describe physiological and dynamic changes to heterogeneous viable populations during alcoholic fermentation, through its ability to discriminate between successful processes and those ending prematurely.

Objective: To describe changes in plasma viral load, CD4+ cell counts, and drug resistance profiles of HIV-2-infected patients receiving antiretroviral (ARV) therapy in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

Methods: Consecutive blood samples were collected from 18 HIV-2-infected ARV-naive patients who had received ARV therapy in the UNAIDS drug access initiative (UNAIDS-DAI) in Abidjan between August 1998 and July 2000. Changes in HIV-2 plasma viral load, CD4+ cell counts, and genotypic and phenotypic drug resistance testing were determined.
