Short-term hearing outcome of malleus removal for surgery: An observational cohort study.

Objectives: The main goal of the present study was to assess hearing outcome for malleus removal in cholesteatoma surgery compared to a group with malleus conservation. The secondary aim was to compare the auditory involvement of the stapes between the two groups.

Material And Methods: A single-center observational study included adult patients operated on by ossiculoplasty for acquired cholesteatoma between 2015 and 2019.

Persistent swallowing disorders after extubation in mechanically ventilated patients in ICU: a two-center prospective study.

Background: Persistent swallowing disorders (SD) are non-pulmonary complications of mechanical ventilation (MV). However, there are few clinical studies on persistent SD in critically ill patients undergoing tracheal intubation for MV. The aim of the present study was to assess the incidence and characteristics of clinical manifestations associated with persistent SD.

Lateral semicircular canal fistula in cholesteatoma: diagnosis and management.

The objective of this retrospective study was to present the authors' experience on the management of labyrinthine fistula secondary to cholesteatoma. 695 patients, who underwent tympanoplasty for cholesteatoma, in a University Hospital between 1993 and 2013 were reviewed, to select only those with labyrinthine fistulas. 42 patients (6%) had cholesteatoma complicated by fistula of the lateral semicircular canal (LSCC).

Titanium prosthesis or autologous incus for total ossicular reconstruction in the absence of the stapes suprastructure and presence of mobile footplate.

The purpose of this study was to compare the hearing results after total ossicular replacement with a titanium prosthesis or autologous incus in the absence of stapes suprastructure and presence of mobile footplate as a retrospective medical record review in a tertiary referral center setting. There were 49 patients who had total ossicular reconstruction (titanium prosthesis, 40 patients; autologous incus, 9 patients). Medical records were reviewed after total ossicular replacement.

Preoperative computed tomography scan may fail to predict perilymphatic gusher.

Objectives: A stapes gusher is a very rare event in ear surgery, but the consequences for hearing can be dramatic. It can usually be predicted by characteristic radiologic abnormalities. We report 2 cases of gusher without any abnormalities seen on the preoperative computed tomography scans.

Intralabyrinthine schwannomas: a case series with discussion of the diagnosis and management.

Objective: By extracting cases of intralabyrinthine schwannomas (ILS) from the sum of all vestibular schwannomas, we aim to identify and analyze unique features of its presentation. This allows us to refine the management protocol of this rare condition.

Design: This is a retrospective study of all patients seen in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Rouen University Hospital, with either ILS or ILS with intracanalicular extension (ILS-IAC) between 2001 and 2011.

Laryngeal sensation recovery by reinnervation in rabbits.

Objectives/hypothesis: To assess the possibilities of restoring laryngeal sensation in an animal model by way of the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (ibSLN) bilateral section and anastomosis to itself or to transposition nerves (i.e., lingual, glossopharyngeal, and great auricular nerves).

[Genetic deafness].

Objectives: The aim of this study was to review the different types of genetic deafness.

Methods: We describe syndromic and isolated sensorineural deafness and transmission deafness.

Results: Genetic sensorineural syndromic deafness represents 30% of cases of genetic deafness.
