Article Synopsis
  • * A study compared two groups of ewes—one allowed multiple matings and the other not—to assess the impact on corpus luteum (CL) development and functionality.
  • * The results showed that mated ewes had longer estrus, larger ovulatory follicles, and better CL perfusion and progesterone levels compared to the control group, indicating enhanced reproductive function.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the impact of shearing ewes during two stages of their pregnancy on blood flow, placentome size, and progesterone levels.
  • Pregnant ewes were divided into four groups based on whether they were sheared during mid or late pregnancy, and assessments were made using ultrasonography and blood tests.
  • Results showed that shearing during mid-pregnancy increased placentome size and certain blood flow metrics, while shearing in late pregnancy had no significant effects on blood flow or progesterone levels.

In several species, mating reduces the estrous length and advances ovulation. The aim of this study was to determine if multiple matings reduces the estrous length and modifies the moment of ovulation, as well as the estradiol and LH patterns in ewes. The estrous cycle of Corriedale ewes was synchronized, and the onset of receptivity was monitored every 3 h with rams, avoiding mating.

Breast cancer is the most common tumor in women and it has high mortality mainly due to the occurrence of tumor metastasis. Both the processes of cell migration and anchorage to the substrate are essential for the development of metastasis. These processes occur by rearrangements of the actin cytoskeleton, regulated by Rho-associated protein kinase 1 (ROCK-1).

Thirty isolates of Escherichia coli from broiler breeders with salpingitis were studied. Using the slide agglutination test, the isolates were found to belong to serogroups O1, O2, O5, O36, O45, O53 and O78. Pathogenicity for day-old chicks was determined by air sac inoculation and isolates were categorized as having high, intermediate or low virulence.

The association of asymptomatic thrombocytopaenia in six patients with acute Lyme disease is described. Recovery from thrombocytopaenia occurred shortly following antibiotic therapy. Patients residing in endemic areas for Lyme disease who present with flu-like symptoms and laboratory findings of thrombocytopaenia should prompt suspicion of acute Lyme disease.

We hypothesized that cyclophosphamide and cis-platinum, without adriamycin, which had been used in previous studies, may be equally efficacious, but less toxic. We treated 27 patients with non-small cell bronchogenic carcinoma with the combination of cyclophosphamide and cis-platinum. We report six responses (25% response rate), with median survival of 79 weeks as compared to 28 weeks in nonresponders (p less than 0.

Thrombotic occlusion remains a major cause of central venous catheter removal prior to completion of therapy. Injection of a dilute solution of a potent fibrinolytic agent, urokinase or streptokinase, into the occluded Silastic central venous catheter consistently reestablishes its patency. This procedure was performed on 352 occluded silicone elastomer central venous catheters with only one failure and one minor complication.

Eighty-six patients with acute leukemia were given 116 continuous intravenous arabinosyl cytosine (Ara-C) infusions (for 24 to 432 hours) with a new portable infusion device. The infusor is powered by interchangeable elastomeric 25 ml balloon reservoirs loaded from standard syringes. The reservoir contents are discharged at nearly constant pressure through an adjustable resistance element, thereby providing flow rates from 0.

Peripherally inserted central venous silicone elastomer catheters were studied in 81 patients who had malignancy requiring prolonged intravenous therapy. The catheters remained in place from 5 to 171 days, with a median of 30 days. Ninety-one percent of the catheters were unassociated with clinical complications.

A 48 year old man with extensive cutaneous and subcutaneous metastatic malignant melanoma responded to treatment by repeated plasma exchanges, partial surgical debulking of tumor masses, and intravenous Corynebacterium parvum. Circulating immune complexes were measured by the serum C1q binding method. Tumor regression coincided with serum C1q binding reduction to normal levels.
