A total of 182 infertile patients undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF)-embryo transfer were randomly assigned into two groups. Eighty-seven patients (group A) underwent 97 treatment cycles and had 87 embryo transfer procedures followed by a 24 h period of bed rest. Ninety-five patients (group B) underwent 102 treatment cycles and had 93 embryo transfer followed by a 20 min period of bed rest.

In intact tissue, DAGO ([D-Ala2, MePhe4, Gly-ol5]enkephalin; 10(-5) M; mu-ligand; addition on the serosal side) stimulated D-glucose absorption and D-glucose-dependent variations in short-circuit current (delta Isc,glu); naloxone (10(-6) M) antagonized these effects. DADLE ([D-Ala2, D-Leu5]enkephalin, mainly a delta-ligand; 10(-5) M) and (pCl-Phe4)-DPDPE ([D-pen2, p-chloro-Phe4, D-Pen5]enkephalin, a more selective delta-ligand; 10(-5) M) did not significantly stimulate delta Isc,glu (addition on the serosal side). In the absence of the muscularis and myenteric plexus or using intact tissue treated with tetrodotoxin (TTX; 3 x 10(-7) M), DAGO was unable to increase delta Isc,glu.

A total of 220 microbiology departments in 205 general hospitals, 12 university hospitals, and 3 military hospitals were surveyed by questionnaire during the period March-May 1996 in order to evaluate the status of diagnostic anaerobic bacteriology in Italy. Responses were received from 47 laboratories (21.3%).

All HCV-seropositive patients underwent detailed clinical, laboratory, virologic, and histologic study to analyze the course of HCV infection. One hundred seventeen of the 658 patients (17.

Prevalence and distribution among types have varied depending upon the methods used and the populations studied. We have applied the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by a Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) analysis using the MY09/MY11 primers for detection of HPV in cervicovaginal lavages obtained from 323 patients who were referred to our Clinical Department either for genital complaints or an abnormal PAP smear.

The SiC particles (part unmilled and part milled) were able to disturb the structure of erythrocyte membranes and to lead to blood red-cell lysis; they also either interfered with complement and activated the alternate pathway, or interacted with biological media and polymorphonuclear leucocyte membranes, thus eliciting reactive oxygen species production. These in vitro properties were detected both in original large particles and unmilled particles, over 40% of which were of respirable size.

Methods: Four-hundred and seventy unselected, consecutive patients with a diagnosis of B-cell NHL were investigated. Anti-HCV antibodies (Ab) and cryolg were sought in all while HCV RNA and rheumatoid factor were detected on HCV-Ab positive samples.
A combined polymerase chain reaction and restriction endonuclease (RE) enzyme assay was developed to discriminate between Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni. Amplimers of the FlaA gene obtained by PCR were digested with AluI and HinfI to distinguish C. coli from C.

Patients And Methods: Two donors were found to have horseshoe kidneys; these were divided at the midline and transplanted into four recipients.
Results: All four recipients had a delayed return of renal function; all eventually functioned with no complications related to the horseshoe kidney.
Neutralizing anti-IFN alpha antibodies (nIFN alpha Abs) occur in a significant proportion of patients with hairy cell leukaemia, hepatitis or solid tumours treated with recombinant IFN alpha (IFN alpha 2a or IFN alpha 2b), but information on their incidence in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is scanty and their clinical relevance is not yet completely defined. By using an IFN alpha antiviral neutralization bioassay, the frequency of nIFN alpha 2a Abs was evaluated in 67Ph+ CML patients during IFN alpha 2a therapy at doses ranging from 6 to 9 MU/d. 15 patients (22%) developed nIFN alpha 2a Abs (titre ranging from 1:40 to 1:20480) and 11/15 (73%) were haematologically and/or karyotypically unresponsive to treatment.

On the basis of this observation we sought to determine the prevalence of HCV infection in the patients affected by B-cell NHL and extended our analysis to all the patients affected by lymphoproliferation disorders seen at our institution in the last 30 months. Five hundred and thirty-seven unselected, consecutive patients were studied.

Twenty-five anti-HCV-positive women with no apparent source of HCV exposure were recruited. A reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and a new quantitative branched DNA-based signal amplification assay (bDNA) were used to detect HCV RNA.

The exact period when glucocorticoid receptors (GR) appear in human embryos is unknown, however their presence is acknowledged in target tissues before the fetal adrenal cortex secretes cortisol. Determining when GR develop could serve as an index of the importance of glucocorticoids in the morphological and functional development of tissues. The aim of this study was to determine time of onset of GR in human tissues using an immunohistochemical method.

The ultrasonographic examination showed shortened bowed limbs, narrow chest, relatively large head, protuberant abdomen, and hydramnios. Radiological and histological studies confirmed the aborted fetus had thanatophoric dysplasia.

Naloxone (10(-6) M) antagonized these effects. In the absence of the muscularis and myenteric plexus this enkephalin or morphine (mu-ligand) reduced Isc and delta Isc,val.

Objective: Two scoring systems based on trans-vaginal sonographic findings of ovarian tumors were evaluated with respect to the prediction of ovarian malignancy.
Study Design: In this retrospective study, 64 premenopausal non-pregnant patients with an ovarian tumor underwent trans-vaginal sonography from 1991 to 1993. In each women a numerical score was calculated using two methods.

A rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for detection of toxigenic Clostridium difficile directly from fecal samples by amplification of toxin A gene fragments was investigated. The technique was applied to monitor the spread of the microorganism in a long-term care ward with a relatively high incidence of overt episodes of diarrhea. The PCR approach has several advantages over traditional methods, rapidly allowing the specific detection of toxigenic Clostridium difficile strains from stool samples in both symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects with toxigenic strains.

Primers of 16S rRNA and flaA genes were used to optimise a PCR technique for detecting thermotolerant campylobacters in poultry meat. Different methods for crude DNA extraction were also evaluated. The use of flaA primers and extraction of nucleic acid by boiling and proteinase K gave good results in the detection of Campylobacter either in artificially or naturally contaminated foodstuffs.
