Effect of Kinesio Taping on Ankle Complex Motion and Stiffness and Jump Landing Time to Stabilization in Female Ballet Dancers.

Ankle sprain is the most commonly diagnosed injury experienced by ballet dancers with few studies investigating preventive support measures such as Kinesio taping. The need exists to examine the mechanical support characteristics of Kinesio taping and effect of application on ankle motion and performance. This may be important to understanding the mechanical mechanisms attributed to Kinesio ankle taping and justify its use in the prevention and treatment of jump landing injuries in ballet dancers.

Coping styles of type I and type II alcohol-dependent men undergoing treatment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways by which individuals with alcohol dependence, who were subgrouped into type I and type II according to the typology criteria of von Knorring et al, (J. Study Alcohol. 1987;48:523-527), cope with life events.

Platelet monoamine oxidase activity and psychometric correlates in male violent offenders imprisoned for homicide or other violent acts.

Violent behavior has been associated with certain personality traits like poor impulse control, sensation seeking, and monotony avoidance, which predispose to increased risk for violent acts. Low platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity has been found in subjects with such traits, as well as in imprisoned violent offenders. On the other hand, cigarette smoking is expected to inhibit MAO activity.

Examination of type I/type II alcoholism typology in a Greek hospital treatment population.

Objective: The study aims at testing the validity of two types of classification of male alcoholism in a Greek hospital treatment sample.

Method: The study population was drawn from male patients with alcohol dependence admitted to the Alcohol Treatment Unit of the Psychiatric Hospital of Attica. Seventy-three patients comprised the study sample after exclusion of subjects with alcohol dependence suffering from a comorbid serious medical condition, schizophrenic disorder, bipolar disorder, drug dependence or abuse, organic mental disorder or inability to read.

Five-factor model of schizophrenic psychopathology: how valid is it?

Aim of the study was to examine the consistency of the five-factor model of schizophrenic symptoms, assess its validity and evaluate its dimensional factor structure using confirmatory factor (CFA) analysis. A sample of 258 randomly assigned DSM-III R patients with schizophrenic disorders were studied by means of the structured clinical interview for the Greek validated Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and were rated on its 30 items. Patients' scores were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA) with varimax rotation.

Biogenic amine metabolites in plasma of drug-naive schizophrenic patients: associations with symptomatology.

The main metabolites of dopamine, noradrenaline, and serotonin, homovanillic acid, methoxyhydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), were estimated in plasma of 20 drug-naive young male schizophrenic patients and 21 healthy controls. Although there were no significant differences between the two groups, multiple regression analysis revealed strong associations of the patients' 5-HIAA and MHPG plasma levels to their scores in the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale items. 5-HIAA levels were mainly related positively to hostility and negatively to somatic concern, and MHPG positively to disorientation and negatively to emotional withdrawal and uncooperativeness.
