Introduction: Radiology played a leading role in the transformation of medicine to a digital environment. To ensure the smooth operation and managing workflow in a digital imaging environment, dedicated, well-trained individuals are needed. The objective of this study was to develop a teaching and learning model for imaging informatics.

Lessons from innovation in medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic: student perspectives on distributed training.

Introduction: Can the forced adaptation brought about by COVID-19 inform the future of clinical education? This study brings a low- and middle-income country perspective to this question. Most studies of the impact of COVID-19 on medical students' training have been conducted in high-income countries, where the infrastructure to convert to alternative virtual or COVID-19-friendly training platforms (online teaching or case discussions and skill development centres) is more established than in low- and middle-income countries. In South Africa, Stellenbosch University instead chose to move substantial components of clinical training away from the traditional city tertiary campus and into smaller district hospitals.

A unique melanocortin-4-receptor signaling profile for obesity-associated constitutively active variants.

The melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) plays a critical role in regulating energy homeostasis. Studies on obesogenic human MC4R (hMC4R) variants have not yet revealed how hMC4R maintains body weight. Here, we identified a signaling profile for obesogenic constitutively active H76R and L250Q hMC4R variants transfected in HEK293 cells that included constitutive activity for adenylyl cyclase (AC), cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) response element (CRE)-driven transcription, and calcium mobilization but not phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (pERK1/2) activity.

Surgical training during the COVID-19 pandemic - a single institution's trainee survey.

Background: Few studies have assessed the impact of COVID-19 on surgical training in low- and middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to survey the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on postgraduate surgical training, research and registrar wellbeing in South Africa.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted as an online survey from 5 October 2020 to 1 December 2020.

Tuning ion energies in plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) processes enables fine control over the material properties of functional coatings. The growth, structural, mechanical, and optical properties of HfO thin films are presented in detail toward photonic applications. The influence of the film thickness and bias value on the properties of HfO thin films deposited at 100 °C using tetrakis(dimethylamino)hafnium (TDMAH) and oxygen plasma using substrate biasing is systematically analyzed.

Undernutrition, such as stunting and underweight, is a major public health concern, which requires multi-sectoral attention. Diet plays a key role in growth and should optimally supply all required nutrients to support the growth. While millets (defined broadly to include sorghum) are traditional foods, and climate smart nutritious crops, which are grown across Africa and Asia, they have not been mainstreamed like rice, wheat, and maize.

The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia is highest among low and middle-income countries. Millets, including sorghum, are a traditional staple in many of these countries and are known to be rich in iron. However, a wide variation in the iron composition of millets has been reported, which needs to be understood in consonance with its bioavailability and roles in reducing anemia.

Radiography students achieving competencies through structured interprofessional education.

Introduction: Interprofessional education (IPE) takes place when representatives of at least two professions work and learn together, about and from each other to provide optimal healthcare. For the successful implementation of an IPE programme, conceptualisation, planning, and operationalisation and coordination among the various professions is crucial, to assist students to obtain the desired competencies of such a programme. The purpose is to investigate if a structured IPE programme assisted radiography students to achieve competencies.

Can Millet Consumption Help Manage Hyperlipidemia and Obesity?: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Potential of Millets for Managing and Reducing the Risk of Developing Diabetes Mellitus.

Background: Outcomes for the pediatric kidney transplant program in Johannesburg (1984-2003) were found to be suboptimal. In this study, we compared (a) early (era 1:1984-2003) to contemporary (era 2:2004-2017) outcomes and (b) compared contemporary outcomes between the public and private sector hospitals in our program.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective record review of all pediatric (<18 years) KA transplants performed in our kidney transplant program at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) and Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre (WDGMC) from 2004 to 2017.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Malawian Farmers on Pre- and Post-Harvest Crop Management to Mitigate Aflatoxin Contamination in Groundnut, Maize and Sorghum-Implication for Behavioral Change.

A knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) study was conducted in three districts of Malawi to test whether the training had resulted in increased knowledge and adoption of recommended pre- and post-harvest crop management practices, and their contribution to reducing aflatoxin contamination in groundnut, maize and sorghum. The study was conducted with 900 farmers at the baseline and 624 farmers at the end-line, while 726 and 696 harvested crop samples were collected for aflatoxin testing at the baseline and end-line, respectively. Results show that the knowledge and practice of pre- and post-harvest crop management for mitigating aflatoxin were inadequate among the farmers at the baseline but somewhat improved after the training as shown at the end-line.

Radon in groundwater baseline study prior to unconventional shale gas development and hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo Basin (South Africa).

The prospect of unconventional shale gas development in the semi-arid Karoo Basin (South Africa) has created the prerequisite to temporally characterise the natural radioactivity in associated groundwater which is solely depended on for drinking and agriculture purposes. Radon (Rn) was the primary natural radionuclide of interest in this study; however, supplementary radium (Ra and Ra) in-water measurements were also conducted. A total of 53 aquifers spanning three provinces were studied during three separate measurement campaigns from 2014 to 2016.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation by Emergency Medical Services in South Africa: Barriers to achieving high quality performance.

Introduction: Survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest significantly improve when high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is performed. Despite sudden cardiac arrest being a leading cause of death in many parts of the world, no studies have determined the quality of CPR delivery by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel in South Africa. The aim of this study was to determine the quality of CPR provision by EMS staff in a simulated setting.

Are Bessel beams resilient to aberrations and turbulence?

It is understood from the conical wave picture that Bessel beams may self-heal after certain opaque obstructions, but the extrapolation to transparent phase screens is not self-evident. Here we consider the propagation of Bessel beams through aberrated obstacles and show that the self-healing is not guaranteed, but rather a function of the severity of the aberration. Paradoxically, we explain why strong aberrations may show self-healing while weak aberrations will not, and highlight the parameters that influence this.

The perceived impact of family physicians on the district health system in South Africa: a cross-sectional survey.

Background: Evidence from first world contexts support the notion that strong primary health care teams contain family physicians (FPs). African leaders are looking for evidence from their own context. The roles and scope of practice of FPs are also contextually defined.

The Influence of Family Physicians Within the South African District Health System: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Purpose: Evidence of the influence of family physicians on health care is required to assist managers and policy makers with human resource planning in Africa. The international argument for family physicians derives mainly from research in high-income countries, so this study aimed to evaluate the influence of family physicians on the South African district health system.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study in 7 South African provinces, comparing 15 district hospitals and 15 community health centers (primary care facilities) with family physicians and the same numbers without family physicians.

Objective: Regulation of energy balance depends on pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptides and melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R). Alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) is the predicted natural POMC-derived peptide that regulates energy balance. Desacetyl-α-MSH, the precursor for α-MSH, is present in brain and blood.

Radon and Thoron In-air Occupational Exposure Study within Selected Wine Cellars of the Western Cape (South Africa) and Associated Annual Effective Doses.

This is the first known study of exposure of Rn (radon) and secondarily Rn (thoron) in-air activity concentrations assessed within nine selected wine cellars in four wine districts of the Western Cape (South Africa) and the associated annual occupational effective doses. E-PERM electret ion chambers (EIC) and RAD-7 α-detectors were used to perform these measurements. The radon in-air levels ranged from 12 ± 4 Bq m to 770 ± 40 Bq m within the nine selected wine cellars.

Radon Levels Measured at a Touristic Thermal Spa Resort in Montagu (South Africa) and Associated Effective Doses.

Radon activity concentrations (in water and in air) were measured at 13 selected locations at the Avalon Springs thermal spa resort in Montagu (Western Cape, South Africa) to estimate the associated effective dose received by employees and visitors. A RAD-7 detector (DURRIDGE), based on alpha spectrometry, and electret detectors (E-PERM®Radelec) were used for these radon measurements. The primary source of radon was natural thermal waters from the hot spring, which were pumped to various locations on the resort, and consequently a range of radon in-water analyses were performed.

hMRAPα, but Not hMRAP2, Enhances hMC4R Constitutive Activity in HEK293 Cells and This Is Not Dependent on hMRAPα Induced Changes in hMC4R Complex N-linked Glycosylation.

MRAP1 but not MRAP2, is essential for melanocortin receptor 2 functional expression. Human MRAP1 splice variant (hMRAPα) and human MRAP2 (hMRAP2) also interact with the other melanocortin receptor subtypes in vitro, although the physiological significance of these interactions is unknown. Previously we showed that HA-hMC4R co-expression with hMRAPα, but not hMRAP2, specifically alters HA-hMC4R complex N-linked glycosylation.
