Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is an issue for healthcare students, influenced by safety concerns and misinformation. The need for better communication training and understanding sociocultural factors in VH was highlighted in a European University Alliance seminar. Practical exercises like simulation role-playing, interprofessional collaboration, and digital literacy may improve vaccine education.

Background: Phosphate is important for several metabolic functions and essential for bone mineralization. Sex-differences exist in the relation between serum phosphate and certain diseases. The reference interval for phosphate is age-adjusted in infants, but most institutions use the same intervals for adult men and women despite increasing evidence for age and sex-differences.

Evaluation of a super powerful bone-anchored hearing system and its users: A retrospective study.

Introduction: Although the Baha 5SP has been commercially available for six years, very few studies have been performed on the device's efficacy. The current study aims to evaluate the characteristics and audiological results in patients with severe-to-profound mixed hearing loss fitted with this superpower sound processor.

Methods: This retrospective evaluation was conducted at a tertiary referral centre where a series of 82 adult patients with severe-to-profound mixed hearing loss were implanted with a percutaneous bone-anchored hearing system and fitted with a superpower sound processor between 2016 and 2019.

Diuretic Use and Serum Phosphate: Rotterdam Study and UK Biobank.

Purpose: Hypophosphatemia (serum phosphate < 0.80 mmol/L) leads to musculoskeletal complaints. The most common drugs linked to hypophosphatemia are thiazide and loop diuretics, but studies in the general population are lacking.

Measurement and optimisation of the perceptual equivalence of the Dutch consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) word lists using synthetic speech and list pairs.

Objectives: (1) to determine whether the standard Dutch word lists for speech audiometry are equally intelligible in normal-hearing listeners (Experiment 1), (2) to investigate whether synthetic speech can be used to create word lists (Experiment 1) and (3) to determine whether the list effect found in Experiment 1 can be reduced by combining two lists into pairs (Experiment 2).

Design: Participants performed speech tests in quiet with the original (natural) and synthetic word lists (Experiment 1.).

Disease Manifestations and Complications in Dutch X-Linked Hypophosphatemia Patients.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is the most common monogenetic cause of chronic hypophosphatemia, characterized by rickets and osteomalacia. Disease manifestations and treatment of XLH patients in the Netherlands are currently unknown. Characteristics of XLH patients participating in the Dutch observational registry for genetic hypophosphatemia and acquired renal phosphate wasting were analyzed.

Implantation of a Cushioning Injectable Implant Using Needle Arthroscopy in the Foot and Ankle and First Carpometacarpal Joint.

Injectable implants constitute a newly developed treatment class in the battle against osteoarthritis. They consist of water-formulated supramolecular polymer, coming from a new class of resorbable biomedical materials, and are implanted in encapsulated joints in a liquid form, where they solidify to form a tough, elastic, and cushioning layer between the joint surfaces. To resort any effect, intra-articular delivery should be guaranteed, and the implant should be distributed throughout the entire joint space.

Breast surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with lobular carcinoma: surgical and oncologic outcome.

Introduction: Breast cancer patients with invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) have an increased risk of positive margins after surgery and often show little response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). We aimed to investigate surgical outcomes in patients with ILC treated with NAC.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, all breast cancer patients with ILC treated with NAC who underwent surgery at the Netherlands Cancer Institute from 2010 to 2019 were selected.

Background: The increasing demand for food and feed products is stretching the capacity of the food value chain to its limits. A key step for ensuring food safety is checking for mycotoxin contamination of wheat. However, this analysis is typically performed by rather complex and expensive chromatographic methods, such as liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Thermal Ablation for Treating Tumor-induced Osteomalacia in a Patient With IV Phosphate Dependency.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome associated with tumors secreting fibroblast growth factor 23 that can be cured with complete surgical resection of the tumor. However, when these tumors are at difficult locations, less invasive modalities such as thermal ablation (TA) might be a good alternative. A 40-year-old woman was seen for a second opinion because of severe hypophosphatemia with complaints of fatigue, myalgia, and muscle weakness for which she needed IV phosphate for 15 to 18 hours per day in addition to oral alfacalcidol and phosphate.

The best of both worlds? General principles of psychopathology in personalized assessment.

A complex systems approach to psychopathology proposes that general principles lie in the dynamic patterns of psychopathology, which are not restricted to specific psychological processes like symptoms or affect. Hence, it must be possible to find general change profiles in time series data of fully personalized questionnaires. In the current study, we examined general change profiles in personalized self-ratings and related these to four measures of treatment outcome (International Symptom Rating, 21-item Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale, daily symptom severity, and self-reflective capacity).

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)23 is one of the major regulators of phosphate homeostasis. Hypophosphatemia can lead to muscle weakness, fatigue, and osteomalacia. In the setting of hypophosphatemia, serum FGF23 can be measured to differentiate between FGF23-mediated and non-FGF23-mediated renal phosphate wasting.

Genetic variants causing G6PD deficiency: Clinical and biochemical data support new WHO classification.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in erythrocytes causes acute haemolytic anaemia upon exposure to fava beans, drugs, or infection; and it predisposes to neonatal jaundice. The polymorphism of the X-linked G6PD gene has been studied extensively: allele frequencies of up to 25% of different G6PD deficient variants are known in many populations; variants that cause chronic non-spherocytic haemolytic anaemia (CNSHA) are instead all rare. WHO recommends G6PD testing to guide 8-aminoquinolines administration to prevent relapse of Plasmodium vivax infection.

Fibrosis of implants remains a significant challenge in the use of biomedical devices and tissue engineering materials. Antifouling coatings, including synthetic zwitterionic coatings, have been developed to prevent fouling and cell adhesion to several implantable biomaterials. While many of these coatings need covalent attachment, a conceptually simpler approach is to use a spontaneous self-assembly event to anchor the coating to a surface.

Deltas are the locus of river-borne sediment accumulation, however, their role in sequestering plastic pollutants is still overlooked. By combining geomorphological, sedimentological, and geochemical analyses, which include time-lapse multibeam bathymetry, sediment provenance, and μFT-IR analyses, we investigate the fate of plastic particles after a river flood event providing an unprecedented documentation of the spatial distribution of sediment as well as of microplastics (MPs), including particles fibers, and phthalates (PAEs) abundances in the subaqueous delta. Sexual dimorphisms in serum calcium and phosphate concentrations in the Rotterdam Study.

Sex differences in serum phosphate and calcium have been reported but the exact nature and underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. We aimed to compare calcium and phosphate concentrations between sexes, and explore potential covariates to elucidate underlying mechanisms of sex differences in a prospective, population-based cohort study. Pooled data of subjects > 45 years from three independent cohorts of the Rotterdam Study (RS) were used: RS-I-3 (n = 3623), RS-II-1 (n = 2394), RS-III-1 (n = 3241), with separate analyses from an additional time point of the first cohort RS-I-1 (n = 2688).

Complexity theory of psychopathology.

There is a renewed interest for complex adaptive system approaches that can account for the inherently complex and dynamic nature of psychopathology. Yet a theory of psychopathology grounded in the principles of complex adaptive systems is lacking. Here, we present such a theory based on the notion of dynamic patterns: patterns that are formed over time.

Comprehensive framework for integrated action on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of anemia: An introduction.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced in 2021 a commitment to develop a comprehensive framework for integrated action on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of anemia and to establish an Anaemia Action Alliance to support the implementation of the framework. WHO commissioned four background papers to provide reflections about the most pressing issues to be addressed for accelerating reductions in the prevalence of anemia. Here, we provide a complete vision of the framework.

Vaccine development against COVID-19 has mitigated severe disease. However, reports of rare but serious adverse events following immunization (sAEFI) in the young populations are fuelling parental anxiety and vaccine hesitancy. With a very early season of viral illnesses including COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, metapneumovirus and several others, children are facing a winter with significant respiratory illness burdens.

Core competencies in applied infectious disease epidemiology: a framework for countries in Europe.

In 2009, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) developed a competency framework to support European Union countries and the European Commission in ensuring a competent public health workforce for Europe. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic emphasised the importance of harmonised public health strategies and competencies across international boundaries, specifically for infectious diseases. This perspective presents the process to update the competency framework for applied infectious disease epidemiology, highlighting ECDC's efforts to support countries with using the framework.
