Enhancing the biocompatibility and mechanical stability of small diameter vascular scaffolds remain significant challenges. To address this challenge, small-diameter tubular structures were electrospun from silk fibroin (SF) from silk textile industry discarded materials to generate bilayer scaffolds that mimic native blood vessels, but derived from a sustainable natural material resource. The inner layer was obtained by directly dissolving SF in formic acid, while the middle layer (SF-M) was achieved through aqueous concentration of the protein.

The green path indicates a low risk of peristomal skin complications (PSCs), focusing on sustaining healthy behaviours and basic stoma care. The yellow path represents a moderate risk, emphasizing the need for patients to self-monitor and recognize early signs of complications.

Since its discovery, the outbreak extended over an area of more than 16,000 square kilometers in Northern Italy and Southern Switzerland. In this review, we summarize the state-of-the-art of research conducted in Italy on both the spreading capacity and control measures of Chemical, physical, and biological control measures deployed since its detection are presented, by highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.

The assessment of treatment efficacy is necessary for patient follow-up and to detect treatment-resistant patients. The aim of this study was to characterize the effect of treatment on blood clots in vitro using quantitative ultrasound parameters.

Methods: Homogeneous phantoms and phantoms with gel or blood clot inclusions of different diameters and mechanical properties were analyzed.

Stimuli-responsive nanocarriers are being widely applied in the development of new strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. An inherent difficulty in general drug therapy is the lack of precision with respect to a specific pathological site, which can lead to toxicity, excessive drug consumption, or premature degradation. In this work, the controlled drug delivery is achieved by using magnetite nanoparticles coated with mesoporous silica with core-shell structure (MMS) and grafted with the thermoresponsive polymer poly [N-isopropylacrylamide-co-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate] (MMS-P).

In whales, this is associated with a substantial increase in maximum body size. Although an elongate body was acquired early in cetacean evolution, the maximum body mass of baleen whales reflects a recent diversification that culminated in the blue whale.

BBS is used as complexing agent for the Fe and Cu ions in the precursors. The as-prepared magnetic materials were tested in As(III) removal processes from water.

Due to their unique properties, they can be used as versatile in vivo reporter proteins under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. This chapter presents methodologies for in-depth characterization of the biochemical, spectroscopic, photophysical, and photochemical properties of FbFPs.

Phototherapies offer treatment of tumors with high spatial selectivity. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) consists in the administration of a photosensitizer (PS) followed by local photoirradiation with light of specific wavelength. The excited states of the PS interact with biomolecules and molecular oxygen producing reactive oxygen species (ROS), which initiate cell death.

Method: Sixteen patients with DVT were recruited and underwent SWE and radiofrequency data acquisitions for QUS on day 0, day 7, and day 30 after the beginning of symptoms, in both proximal and distal zones of the clot identified on B-mode scan. SWE and QUS features were computed to differentiate between thrombi at day 0, day 7, and day 30 following treatment with heparin or oral anticoagulant.
The Miocene Pisco Formation, broadly exposed in the Ica Desert of southern Peru, is among the most outstanding Cenozoic marine Fossil-Lagerstätten worldwide. It is renowned for its exceptional preservation and abundance of vertebrate fossils, including a rich assemblage of whales and dolphins (Cetacea). Here, we integrate taphonomic data on 890 marine vertebrate fossils, gathered through 16 different localities.

Protein corona, the adsorption layer that forms spontaneously around NPs once in contact with biological fluids, determines to a great extent the efficiency of PDT. In this work, we explore the possibility that pectin-coated Au NPs (Au@Pec NPs) could act as adjuvants in riboflavin (Rf)-based PDT by comparing the photodamage in HeLa cells cultured in the presence and in the absence of the NPs.

Morphological inferences and molecular phylogenetic analyses on extant specimens suggest that the roots of whale barnacles (Coronulidae) are to be found among the chelonibiid turtle barnacles, but the hard-part modifications that enabled early coronuloids to attach to the cetacean skin are still largely to be perceived. Here, we reappraise a fossil chelonibiid specimen from the Miocene of insular Tanzania that was previously referred to the living species Chelonibia caretta.

On 21 February 2020, the first autochthonous case of COVID-19 was detected in Italy. Our goal is to report the most common chest computed tomography (CT) findings identified in 64 patients, in the initial phase of COVID-19.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPhotothermal therapy (PTT) is a noninvasive treatment for cancer relying on the incorporation of NIR-light absorbing nanomaterials into cells, which upon illumination release heat causing thermally induced cell death. We prove that irradiation of aqueous suspensions of poly(vinylpyrrolidone)-coated silver nanoplates (PVPAgNP) or PVPAgNP in HeLa cells with red or NIR lasers causes a sizeable photothermal effect, which in cells can be visualized with the temperature sensing fluorophore Rhodamine B (RhB) using spinning disk confocal fluorescence microscopy or fluorescence lifetime imaging. Upon red-light irradiation of cells that were incubated with both, RhB and PVPAgNP at concentrations with no adverse effects on cell viability, a substantial heat release is detected.

Aim: The metabolic behavior and the prognostic value of F-FDG-PET/CT in gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is not well investigated. The aim of this study was to analyze the metabolic behavior of GIST and the prognostic role of pretreatment PET/CT features.
Methods: In this retrospective study, we included 35 patients with a diagnosis of GIST who underwent a pretreatment F-FDG-PET/CT scan.
Objective: The efficacy of tocilizumab (TCZ) in GCA is supported by two randomized controlled studies, in which TCZ allowed remission to be achieved after 52 weeks of treatment. However, after discontinuation of treatment, half of the patients relapsed. The aim of this study was to analyse the efficacy and safety of long-term treatment with TCZ and the role of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET/CT scanning in the follow-up of these patients.
