The current interest in malaria elimination has led to a renewed interest in drugs that can be used for mass administration to minimize malaria transmission. Primaquine (PQ) is the only generally available drug with a strong activity against mature Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes, the parasite stage responsible for transmission. In this study we present a quick and easy method for counting trinucleotide repeats by de-oxyadenosine overhang (A-overhang)-dependent repeat expansion determination (ADRED). During standard Taq DNA polymerase-based sequencing reactions, the unterminated sequencing products of short PCR fragments are tagged with a 3'-end A-overhang that is visible as an intense peak in an electropherogram; this allows for easy and precise determination of the fragment length and thus the extent of repeat expansions. ADRED has clear advantages over existing methods, because repeat numbers of both normal and pathogenic (expanded) alleles can be analyzed without using labeled primers or labeled DNA standards.

We present a formulation of the scalar diffraction of spherical waves through plane apertures that takes advantage of the importance of the critical points and the semiperiodic zones that are defined in the plane of the aperture. Our approach overcomes the intrinsic limitations of stationary-phase methods (when the critical points coalesce) and allows a direct implementation in terms of numerical algorithms for computations of any predefined accuracy. A comparison of the human health risk to consumers using one of two types of toilet rimblock products, either a p-dichlorobenzene-based rimblock or two newer fragrance/surfactant-based alternatives, was conducted. Rimblock products are designed for global use by consumers worldwide and function by releasing volatile compounds into indoor air with subsequent exposure presumed to be mainly by inhalation of indoor air. Using the THERdbASE exposure model and experimentally determined emission data, indoor air concentrations and daily intake values were determined for both types of rimblock products.
