Duplex ultrasound (DUS) is an essential tool for characterizing and monitoring arteriovenous (AV) access for hemodialysis. The aim of the work described here, requested by the French Society of Vascular Medicine in collaboration with the French-Speaking Vascular Access Society, is to propose a standardized methodology for performing and documenting DUS, taking into account the variety of AV access techniques and the problems routinely encountered. A steering committee reviewed the literature and selected the relevant references.

A preclinical study was performed to investigate the efficacy and safety of a new viral inactivated, devitalized, freeze-dried and gamma-sterilized human umbilical cord amniotic membrane (hUC-AM) for the treatment of deep scleral and corneal defects with or without perforation. Firstly, hUC-AM was investigated on experimental deep sclerectomy in rabbit eyes ( = 12) and compared to autograft ( = 4) on cross section histology. A series of mono- and bifunctional acyl compounds, build from the 8-O-azeloyl-14-benzoylaconine scaffold and differing by the length of the alkyl linker chain, were synthesised and evaluated against a panel of human tumour cell lines, A-549 (lung cancer), MCF-7 (breast cancer) and HCT-15 (colon cancer). None of the mono-[O-(14-benzoylaconine-8-yl)]esters displayed in vitro activity against tumour cells (IC(50) > 60 μM). However, three bis-[O-(14-benzoylaconine-8-yl)]esters presented a noticeable in vitro cytotoxic activity, those bearing 7, 8 and 9 carbon atoms between the two aconitine moieties, with IC(50)s ranging between 4 and 28 μM.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the OptiVis™ Multifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL) in patients undergoing bilateral crystalline lens replacement following extracapsular extraction by phacoemulsification.

Methods: This was a prospective 6-month, open-label, nonrandomized clinical trial of subjects undergoing bilateral implantation with the OptiVis Multifocal IOL. Of the 121 eyes enrolled, 88 eyes of 44 subjects completed the entire 6-month trial.

A series of nucleoside derivatives was obtained via heteroatom annulation of the amino oxazoline of D-(-)-arabinose. Dialysate purity has become a major concern in recent years since it has been proven that contamination of dialysate is able to induce the production of proinflammatory cytokines, putatively implicated in the development of dialysis related pathology. In order to reduce this risk, it is advised to use ultrapure dialysate as a new standard of dialysate purity. A new alkaloid of Aconitum karacolicum Rapcs, from the Ranunculaceae family, collected in Kirghizstan, was isolated from the roots of this plant, using a purification scheme based upon its in vitro antiproliferative properties against three human tumour cell lines in culture. Structural identification was performed using high resolution MS-MS mass spectrometry and (1)H, (13)C, 2D NOESY NMR spectroscopy analysis. The derivatization of racemic 5-[(2-methylphenoxy)methyl]-2-amino-2-oxazoline, developed as an imidazoline binding sites ligand, with (+)-(R)-alpha-methylbenzyl isocyanate was performed in chloroform.
