Evaluation of the effectiveness of vaccination against diphtheria among medical staff of the chair and the Jagiellonian University Hospital of Infectious Diseases in Cracow, Poland. Some epidemiological observations.

In Poland, twenty-five cases of diphtheria, mostly among adults (including five foreigners) in the region adjacent to the eastern border were registered in the years 1992-1996. In 1993-1994, because of the threat of diphtheria infection, 41 healthy members of the medical staff of the University Hospital of Infectious Diseases in Kraków, mainly women aged 25-57 years were immunized with Td and d vaccines with a 6-month interval between courses. Prior to vaccination, 17(41%) individuals showed a lack of diphtheria antibodies as determined with a passive haemagglutination test.

[Drug resistance of Helicobacter pylori strains isolated from patients with inflammation of stomach mucous membrane and peptic ulcer of stomach and duodenum].

[Reaction of dental methacrylate material in in vivo tests--selected hematologic and immunologic indices].

Wistar rats were implanted subcutaneously with 2.5 x 6 mm cylindrical matrices, made from the home-made metacrylate material Akpol S, and, for comparative purposes, with the imported materials Trevalon and Superacryl. At different time intervals quantitative and qualitative analyses of the picture of leucocytes and of blood plasma proteins were carried out in groups of animals implanted with the above-mentioned materials and in a control one.

[Histopathologic evaluation of the reactivity of soft tissue to dental acrylate implants--in vivo examinations].

Wistar rats were implanted subcutaneously with samples of the home-made metacrylate material Akpol S and, for comparative purposes, with samples of the imported materials Trevalon and Superacryl. Throughout a period of 7 weeks, at 7-day intervals, sections of the tissues surrounding implants were collected from the animals and examined histopathologically. No differences in the character of the inflammatory reaction ensuing around the implants made from the three tested materials were observed.

Effect of N,N'-bis(methylisatin-beta-thiosemicarbazone)-2-methylpiperazine on vaccinia virus replication in vitro and in vivo. Brief report.

The inhibitory effect of N,N'-bis(methylisatin-beta-thiosemicarbazone)-2-methylpiperazine (compound TSKI-VI) and methisazone (Marboran) on the growth of vaccinia virus (IHD strain) was studied in vitro and in vivo. The therapeutic indices of both compounds determined in vivo were similar, but TSKI-VI was found more efficient in vitro.

The influence of some thiosemicarbazone derivatives with antiviral activity on immune response in mice.

The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of the thiosemicarbazone-group of compounds with antiviral activity on the humoral and cellular immune response in R III, CBA and Balb/c mice, immunized with sheep erythrocytes or sensitized with oxazolon. The plaque forming cells test, according to Jerne's method and the oxazolon hypersensitivity test were performed. All of the examined compounds, inhibited the humoral immune response, and three of them decreased also the cellular response.

The effect of certain mannich N-bases, derivatives of isatin beta-thiosemicarbazone, on the replication of vaccinia virus in in vitro studies.

Twenty-three Mannich mono- and bis-N-bases, derivatives of isatin beta-thiosemicarbazone (IBT), were synthetized. Eighteen of these were tested for their inhibitory effect on the replication of vaccinia virus (IHD strain) in cultures of chick embryo fibroblasts. All the compounds studied showed antiviral activity, demonstrated by the agar-diffusion method (screening).

Computer evaluation of antiviral activities of some thiosemicarbazones in experiments in vivo.

A new mathematical method based on 3-, 4- or 6-point parallel-line assays was applied for working out a computer programme used to evaluate the activity of some new isatin-beta-thiosemicarbazone derivatives against vaccinia virus, studied in vivo.
