Small fetuses, with estimated fetal weight (EFW) below the tenth percentile, are classified as fetal growth restriction (FGR) or small for gestational age (SGA) based on prenatal ultrasound. FGR fetuses have a greater risk of stillbirth and perinatal complications and may benefit from serial ultrasound scans to guide early delivery. Abnormal serum angiogenic factors, such as the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1):placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio, have shown potential to more accurately distinguish FGR from SGA, with fewer false positives.

Article Synopsis
  • A new plant disease affecting strawberry plants (cv. 'Monterey') was discovered in the Alentejo region of Portugal during summer 2023, causing severe symptoms like wilting, leaf drying, and plant stunting, impacting approximately 80% of the plants in the area.
  • Samples were collected and treated using disinfecting protocols before being cultured on Komada's medium, resulting in the growth of white mycelia that resembled Fusarium oxysporum.
  • Molecular analysis confirmed the presence of Fusarium oxysporum through PCR amplification of specific gene segments, with the sequences exhibiting over 99% similarity to known F. oxysporum isolates, and further tests indicated potential identification as F. oxysporum f

Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is proposed as an alternative to the use of chemical fumigants against Fusarium wilt in strawberry crops. Different residual wastes (rice bran, fishmeal, and residual strawberry extrudate) were assessed as amendments for ASD. Two different concentrations and two incubation durations were tested in growth chamber trials.

Background: The diagnosis of pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) remains a challenge given the lack of universally accepted criteria. Although venography (VG) is the current gold standard for the diagnosis of PCS, non-invasive techniques like transvaginal ultrasonography (TVU) appear to be a valid alternative. The aim of this study was to design a predictive model for the venographic diagnostic of PCS using the parameters identified by TVU in patients with clinical suspicion of PCS, in order to individually assess the need to perform an invasive diagnostic and therapeutic technique such as VG.

Background: The anorectal angle (ARA) has been assessed with different imaging methods and its measurement has traditionally been based on defecography or magnetic resonance studies. Different ultrasound methodologies have also been used for ARA assessment and have been validated as alternatives for the ARA measurement, such as three-dimensional (3D) endovaginal ultrasound and 3D transperineal ultrasound. 3D transperineal ultrasound does not require the introduction of ultrasound transducers inside the anal canal.

Although the fetal head position has traditionally been evaluated by digital examination (DE), it has a failure rate ranging between 20 and 70%; hence, intrapartum transabdominal ultrasonography (TUS) has become relevant. We aimed to evaluate the utility of the TUS to identify the fetal head positions in vacuum-assisted deliveries. We performed a prospective observational study including 101 pregnant patients in active labor who required a vacuum-assisted delivery.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the association between Allostatic Load (AL) and physical performance scores in older adults from four cities in North and South America.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data from 1101 volunteers from three countries (Canada, Brazil, and Colombia) from the International Mobility in Aging Study (IMIAS) were used to evaluate the association between AL index and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) scores. Three multiple linear regression models adjusted by age, Socioeconomic Status (SES), chronic conditions, depression symptoms, and Leganés Cognitive Test (LCT) were developed to estimate the independent association between SPPB and AL.

Currently, cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is offered as part of a contingent screening for patients with a first-trimester combined test (FCT) risk between 1/50 and 1/250. However, most aneuploidies are within the group of patients with a risk above 1/10. An observational, retrospective, and multi-centric study was carried out, to evaluate the theorical performance of lowering the cut-off point for the high-risk group from 1/50 to 1/10.

It would be logical to think that single-incision mini-slings (SIMS) should behave like the rest of the tension-free vaginal tape and, therefore, to believe that they present a similar ultrasound appearance, but there are no studies on this matter. Therefore, the main aim of our research is to determine which ultrasound parameters are associated with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in patients carrying SIMS. A prospective observational study was carried out including 94 patients who were candidates for SUI corrective surgery with SIMS between 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2021 at the Universitary Hospital of Valme (Seville, Spain).

Background: Fetal smallness affects 10% of pregnancies. Small fetuses are at a higher risk of adverse outcomes. Their management using estimated fetal weight and feto-maternal Doppler has a high sensitivity for adverse outcomes; however, more than 60% of fetuses are electively delivered at 37 to 38 weeks.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the longitudinal predictions between glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and physical performance scores in different epidemiological contexts of aging.

Material And Methods: Longitudinal data of 1,337 older people from three countries (Canada, Brazil and Colombia) of the International Mobility in Aging Study (IMIAS) were used to assess the relationship between HbA1c and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) scores between 2012 and 2016. Linear Mixed Models grouped by sex and adjusted by Age, Study site, Chronic Conditions, Anthropometric Measures, and Inflammatory Level were used to estimate the influence of HbA1c and covariates on SPPB scores.

Fusarium wilt is one of the most widespread diseases in carnation crops in a large number of countries. Plant protection products commonly used to remedy the disease have been considered ineffective and environmentally unsafe for commercial use. As an alternative, the use of suppressive growth media has been proposed.
