The study of the supramolecular organization of the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation system (OXPHOS) in various eukaryotes has led to the accumulation of a considerable amount of data on the composition, stoichiometry, and architecture of its constituent superstructures. However, the link between the features of system arrangement and the biological characteristics of the studied organisms has been poorly explored. Here, we report a comparative investigation into supramolecular and functional OXPHOS organization in the mitochondria of etiolated shoots of winter wheat ( L.

COLD is a major naturally occurring stress that usually causes complex symptoms and severe yield loss in crops. R-loops function in various cellular processes, including development and stress responses, in plants. However, how R-loops function in COLD responses is largely unknown in COLD susceptible crops like rice (Oryza sativa L.

Based on the readily available 3-organyl-5-(chloromethyl)isoxazoles, a number of previously unknown water-soluble conjugates of isoxazoles with thiourea, amino acids, some secondary and tertiary amines, and thioglycolic acid were synthesized. The bacteriostatic activity of aforementioned compounds has been studied against Enterococcus durans B-603, Bacillus subtilis B-407, Rhodococcus qingshengii Ac-2784D, and Escherichia coli B-1238 microorganisms (provided by All-Russian Collection of Microorganisms, VKM). The influence of the nature of the substituents in positions 3 and 5 of the isoxazole ring on the antimicrobial activity of the obtained compounds has been determined.

Drought stress usually causes huge economic losses for tobacco industries. Drought stress exhibits multifaceted impacts on tobacco systems through inducing changes at different levels, such as physiological and chemical changes, changes of gene transcription and metabolic changes. Understanding how plants respond and adapt to drought stress helps generate engineered plants with enhanced drought resistance.

Tertiary phosphine oxides, phosphine sulfides, and phosphine selenides containing pyridine, imidazole, and pyrazole groups have been synthesized via the reaction of elemental phosphorus or secondary phosphine oxides with functional pyridines, imidazoles, and pyrazoles. Alkyl tris(2-pyridylethyl)phosphonium iodide and bromide are also obtained by quaternization of the corresponding phosphine. Antimicrobial activity of the synthesized compounds, including nitrogen-containing heterocycles, phosphorus, selenium, and sulfur, with respect to Enterococcus durans, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa microorganisms is evaluated.

The antitumor properties of aqueous extracts of Inonotus rheades basidiomycete mushrooms were evaluated when the fungi were cultured on wood discs and wood shavings (birch) at 25 ± 1°C in the dark and under constant illumination with blue light (12.8 W/m). The aqueous fraction containing water-soluble polysaccharides was isolated and analyzed: WS-5 fraction cultured on wood discs under blue light illumination, WS-8 fraction grown under similar conditions on wood shavings; WS-6 fraction grown in the dark on wood discs; and WS-7 fraction grown under similar conditions on wood shavings.

This study examined effects of the styrylpyrone fraction from mycelium of hymenochaetoid species, Inonotus rheades (Agaricomycetes), on reactive oxygen species inhibition in Thellungiella salsuginea cell culture under oxidative stress. We identified antioxidant effects of styrylpyrones from I. rheades mycelium on oxidative stress in T.

The physical and functional organisation of the OXPHOS system in mitochondria in vivo remains elusive. At present, different models of OXPHOS arrangement, representing either highly ordered respiratory strings or, vice versa, a set of randomly dispersed supercomplexes and respiratory complexes, have been suggested. In the present study, we examined a supramolecular arrangement of the OXPHOS system in pea shoot mitochondria using digitonin solubilisation of its constituents, which were further analysed by classical BN-related techniques and a multidimensional gel electrophoresis system when required.

The phenolic compounds of Inonotus rheades (Pers.) Bondartsev and Singer (Hymenochaetaceae), a typical xylotrophic basidiomycete, and accumulation of styrylpyrones in mycelium under the influence of light of different wavelengths were investigated. Six styrylpyrones (cis- and trans-hispidin, cis- and trans-bisnoryangonin, and phellinins A1 and A2) and 5 bis(styrylpyrones) (3,14'-bishispidinyl, hypholomin B, 3-bisnoryangonyl-14'-hispidin, 1,1-distyrylpyrylethane, and rheadinin) were detected in the extract of I.

Heat shock is known to accelerate mitochondrial ROS production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. But how yeast mitochondria produce ROS under heat-shock condition is not completely clear. Previously, it was shown that ROS production in heat-stressed fermenting yeast cells was accompanied by mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) increase.

Alternative oxidase (AOX) is one of the terminal oxidases of the plant mitochondrial electron transport chain. AOX acts as a means to relax the highly coupled and tensed electron transport process in mitochondria thus providing and maintaining the much needed metabolic homeostasis by directly reducing oxygen to water. In the process AOX also act as facilitator for signaling molecules conveying the metabolic status of mitochondria to the nucleus and thus able to influence nuclear gene expression.

The influence of biologically active substance germatranol in low and very low doses on the respiration rate and the content of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in wheat roots under conditions of high stress was investigated. The results showed that solutions of the studied substance in concentrations of from 10–5 M to 10–10 M (depending on the temperature) increase the thermotolerance of wheat germs and affect the ROS content and respiration rate. It is assumed that germatranol can have a positive impact on plant growth and development and act as antioxidants in plant cells.

Moderate heat shock increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production that led to cell death in glucose-grown Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. Conditions that disturb mitochondrial functions such as treatment by uncouplers and petite mutation were shown to inhibit ROS production and protects cell from thermal death. Hence, mitochondria are responsible for ROS production and play an active role in cell death.

The appearance of dehydrins (DHNs) in cells is required for the development of cold resistance. DHNs are therefore considered specific markers of cold resistance by some authors. DHNs accumulate in plants concomitantly with a reduction of intracellular water content, and presumably protect membranes and proteins from damage caused by moisture loss.

Gene expression, protein synthesis, and activities of alternative oxidase (AOX), uncoupling proteins (UCP), adenine nucleotide translocator (ANT), and non-coupled NAD(P)H dehydrogenases (NDex, NDPex, and NDin) were studied in shoots of etiolated winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings after exposure to hardening low positive (2°C for 7 days) and freezing (-2°C for 2 days) temperatures. The cold hardening efficiently increased frost-resistance of the seedlings and decreased the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during further cold shock.

The relationship between blood levels of HSP72, HSP72+HSP73, and HSP90 and genotypes of three polymorphisms of the HSP70 family, HSPA1L (2437T/C) and HSPA1B (2074G/C and 1267A/G) as well as GSTT1 and GSTM1 polymorphisms was studied in 82 men chronically exposed to mercury. Of these, 40 men were exposed to mercury for more than 10 years (group 1) and 42 developed chronic mercuric intoxication (group 2). The groups differed significantly by TT (p=0.

Amiodarone (AMD) is known to induce a transient increase in cytosolic Ca2+ level in cells of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In the present study the effect of AMD on the thermotolerance and Hsp104p synthesis of the yeast was studied. AMD induced Hsp104p synthesis and increased survival of the yeast after a severe heat shock (50°C).
