The functions of T cells and monocytes were studied in relation to the clinical stage and clinical course of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients, treated by interferon alpha (LFN-alpha). Lymphoproliferative response (LPR) to phytohemagglutinin and phagocytic activity of peripheral blood monocytes were estimated before, immediately after, and six months after completion of therapy with IFN-alpha alone (applied in stage II RCC) or in combination with vinblastine (in stages III and IV). The number of total T cells and their mitogen-induced proliferative response were diminished in all patient groups before therapy, the decrease of LPR being more pronounced in advanced (III and IV) stages of the disease.

Our prospective nonrandomized study included 46 patients with invasive urinary bladder carcinoma of the clinical T3a and b stages. The patients were treated by radical radiotherapy (65 Gy, conventional fractioning) and by Carboplatin (150 mg per week during radiotherapy; total 900 mg). Of 35 patients for whom the response was evaluated, the complete regression of tumor was reached in 85.

In 16 patients with pain caused by diffuse osteolytic or osteoplastic-osteolytic metastases, salmon calcitonin was used as pain relieving treatment. All patients were pretreated with opiate type analgesics without a satisfactory effect. In 2 patients it was possible to withdraw completely previous opiate intake.

The goal of our prospective nonrandom study was to improve treatment results in advanced bladder cancer and possibility of cure with acceptable toxicity and reduced rate of late complications. Fifty-three patients with locally advanced bladder cancer (clinical stage T3a and b) treated by radical radiotherapy (65 Gy, conventional fractionation) and concomitant carboplatin (150 mg in bolus infusion, once a week, every fifth day an hour prior to the irradiation, up to total dose of 900 mg, during the treatment course. Out of 53 evaluable patients, complete response was achieved in 47/53 (88.

Unlabelled: Radiotherapy combined with platinum compounds in widely used despite unclear biological basis and mechanism of their potentiation. We started a prospective nonrandom study on January 1, 1991 with the aim to ameliorate local tumour control and possibility of curative treatment, and treatment of toxicyty.

Patients Characteristics: 82 patients with locally advanced bladder cancer (stage T3 and localizet T4) were treated with radiochemotherapy.

Immunoreactive proteins--serum immunoglobulins and immune complexes were evaluated in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients. The analyses were done after radical nephrectomy before, at the end, and six months after the therapy, with IFN alpha alone (in patients in Stage II) or IFN alpha in the combination with vinblastine (in patients in Stage III and IV of the disease). Data obtained before immuno- or immunochemotherapy show significant increase in IgG and IgA concentrations in RCC patients in all stages of the disease investigated--in comparison to controls, while circulating immune complexes were significantly elevated only in patients in the advanced Stages of the disease (III and IV).
