X-ray crystallography is commonly used to determine crystal structures, whether continuous or ultrashort x rays are used. In this paper, it is shown that using only ultrashort pulses, it is possible to determine interplanar spacing in diamond layers, the distance between which can be only a few angstroms. The results obtained can be extended, with further development of the presented theory, to determine 3D objects in the crystal structure, the dimensions of which can be only a few angstroms.

The extraction of lipids by the Folch method from the muscles of all the fish studied led to statistically significant differences in the values of N. At the same time, lipid extraction led to a statistically significant increase in C in pike and roach, and to a statistically insignificant decrease in C in perch and bream. Thus, lipid extraction cannot serve as a universal method of sample preparation for the analysis of the isotopic composition of carbon (C/C) and nitrogen (N/N) in fish muscles.

Silicene, a Si-based analogue of graphene, holds a high promise for electronics because of its exceptional properties but a high chemical reactivity makes it a very challenging material to work with. The silicene lattice can be stabilized by active metals to form stoichiometric compounds MSi. Being candidate topological semimetals, these materials provide an opportunity to probe layer dependence of unconventional electronic structures.

Article Synopsis
  • Fish consumption is the primary source of mercury exposure in humans, with concentrations in fish from northwestern Russia ranging from 0.01 to 1.68 μg/g wet weight.
  • Differences in mercury accumulation depend on fish type, diet, size, and water body characteristics, with 7% of fish exceeding Russian regulatory mercury levels.
  • About 44% of fish may lead to mercury intake above acceptable weekly limits for preschoolers, 34% for primary school children, and 17% for adults, raising concerns about safety even when levels are within regulatory standards.

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a well-studied, mostly benign, phenomenon; however, arrhythmic mitral valve prolapse (AMVP) is a rare subtype that can precipitate sudden cardiac death (SCD). Herein, we present a case of a young female with sudden cardiac arrest. Extensive multimodality imaging and follow-up helped establish the diagnosis of AMVP.

Immature dengue virions contained in patient blood samples are essentially not infectious because the uncleaved surface protein prM renders them incompetent for membrane fusion. However, the immature virions regain full infectivity when they interact with anti-prM antibodies, and once opsonised virion fusion into Fc receptor-expressing cells is facilitated. We propose a within-host mathematical model for the immune response which takes into account the dichotomy between mature infectious and immature noninfectious dengue virions.

The global prevalence of diabetes mellitus and its severe complications is on the rise. The study of the pathogenesis of the onset and the progression of complications related to the disease, as well as the search for new therapeutic agents and methods of treatment, remains relevant. Experimental models are extremely important in the study of diabetes.

Diabetes affects over 350 million people worldwide, with the figure projected to rise to nearly 500 million over the next 20 years, according to the World Health Organization. Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 1 diabetes) is an endocrine disorder caused by an autoimmune reaction that destroys insulin-producing β-cells in the pancreas, which leads to insulin deficiency. Administration of exogenous insulin remains at the moment the treatment mainstay.

The studies of cell plasticity and differentiation abilities are important problems in modern cellular biology. The use of histone deacetylase inhibitor - valproic acid is a promising approach to increasing the differentiation efficiency of various cell types. In this paper we investigate the ability of mouse submandibular salivary gland cells to differentiate into the hepatic direction and the effect of valproic acid on the efficiency of this differentiation.

The article describes the clinical case and analyzes the literature concerning endoprosthesis replacement in the case of traumatic thoracic aortic injury in polytrauma. Current strategy of diagnostics and treatment of patient in critical condition with rupture of isthmic aortic part is based on the principle of multistage surgical treatment (damage control orthopedic). The external fixation of multiple pelvis and extremities fractures and on-time implantation of stent-graft in thoracic aortic part were performed at first hours after the admission.

A total of 273 lithotripsies were made from March 2008 to February 2009 in an urgent urology department. Of them, 85 patients had concrements in the kidney pelvis, 117--in the ureter and 61--in the calyx. Lithotripsy was made in renal failure caused by two-sided block in 6 cases, in acute pyelonephritis in 29 cases in which lithotripsy was performed after preliminary stenting, sanation and elimination of suppuration.

Therapeutic activity, pharmacokinetic and bioavailability on animals (inbred white mouse, rabbits) were evaluated for Ofloxacin-PhPO and Pefloxacin-genova in comparison with innovator products--Tarivid and Abaktal. The results of the experiments demonstrate that investigated generics by their therapeutic efficacy in animals and by bioavailability are similar to original products.

Pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of the antimycotics ketoconazole FPO and fluconazole (Russia) and the analogous drugs nizoral (Belgium) and diflucan (France) were comparatively studied on animals and in clinical trials. The pharmacokinetic parameters of the drugs were determined and their bioequivalence was shown (90-110%) that is evident of their therapeutic equality.

The authors discuss problems of prognosis, prophylactics, diagnosis and treatment of syndrome of fat embolism in severe combined traumas. On the basis of great statistical material a scale for prognosis of the risk of the development of the syndrome directly at the admission of the patient has been developed and a system of prophylactic measures is proposed started since the fist hours at the hospital. A scale for diagnosis has been proposed for diagnosis of the developed fat embolism syndrome.

Under analysis there were data of hormonal activity of the hypothalamo-hypohysis-adrenocortical system and the incretory apparatus of the pancreas, metabolism (of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates) and concentration of microelements (iron, zinc), lipid peroxidation (content of malonic dialdehyde and diene conjugates, on the one hand, and total oxidative activity of blood, superoxide dismutase (SOD), ceruloplasmin, catalase, SH-group, on the other hand) and results of its therapeutic correction (with superoxide dismutase, ionole, extracorporeal laser irradiation and laser irradiation of the wounds), content of the inflammatory reaction markers (tumor necrosis factor and IL-1) in patients with a severe combined trauma in the dynamics of traumatic disease. The results obtained and literature data allow a conclusion to be made that the basis of metabolic changes in severe combined traumas are formed by a developing adaptation reaction of organism immediately after trauma integrated with the systemic aseptic inflammatory response caused by vast necrosis of tissues, hypo- and reperfusion processes. The intensity of these reactions depends on severity of the trauma, determines its clinical course and outcome.

The system MONIMIR has been developed to study the coordination of eye, head and arm movements as well as spinal reflexes in microgravity and was used during three spaceflights on board of the station MIR. The following investigations in the course of the experiment MONIMIR were performed: (1) slow head movements in three planes, (2.3) fast pointing movements of eyes, head and arm to acoustic and visual targets, (4) tracking movements of eyes, head and arm to visual targets, (5) head and arm movements based on short term memory and (6) patellar-tendon-reflex.

It was shown that 3,12-b-dimethyl-octahydroindol-(2,3-a) quinolyzine (at the dose of 1/6 of LD50) exerted an antialcohol effect in mice and rats which is probably due to an increased content of the brain 5-hydroxytryptamine resulting from selective inhibition of its deamination.
