Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a treatment for chronic intractable pain powered by an implantable pulse generator that may be rechargeable or not rechargeable (NR). It is performed in 2 stages (a trialing phase followed by permanent device implantation) and necessitates 2 hospitalizations, which may increase infection risk. This analysis explores the cost impact of improvements in battery longevity and the adoption of 1-step (direct-to-implant [DTI]) SCS implantation.

Combining results of field studies and mathematical modeling, empirical evidence for a generic pattern-formation mechanism is demonstrated with the clonal shrub L. Because changes in soil characteristics directly affect species recruitment, vegetation dynamics and resilience, we investigated how caryopses of native grasses from dry and wet grasslands respond to water stress under current and future temperature regimes.
Methods: Caryopses were collected from 10 grass species in dry and wet grasslands, subjected or not to a fire event, and tested for germination at increasing osmotic potential (0 to -1.
Background: The treatment of end-stage chronic renal failure involves substantial costs for health care, which could be higher considering hemodialysis access complications management costs. Complications could be addressed by cannulation technique, but also by the needle. In particular, the use of a metal needle for cannulation is responsible for several complications that compromise dialysis delivery and require interventions.

Methods: We exposed seeds of eight grass species from the Cerrado, the Brazilian savanna to heat-shock (80°C or 110°C for 5 min) and/or smoke water, and then set them to germinate in light or dark, at either summer (28°C/18°C) or winter (27°C/14°C) temperature regimes in an incubator. In addition, we evaluated the effects of smoke water on seedling root and shoot growth for four of the species.
Background: The rapid spread of drug-resistant strains of protozoan parasites required the urgent need for new effective drugs. Natural products offer a variety of chemical structures, which make them a valuable source of lead compounds for the development of such new drugs. Cerrado is the second largest biome in Brazil and has the richest flora of all the world savannahs.

We investigated the phytotoxicity of pequi leaves added to substrate soil in quantities compatible with the litter produced by this species. Pequi leaves were triturated and added to red latosol in concentrations of 0.

Functional groups of species may differ in any of these traits, potentially resulting in (1) differences in mean RGR of groups, and (2) differences in the traits driving RGR variation within each group. We tested these predictions by comparing deciduous and evergreen savanna trees.

Remote monitoring allows assessment of device function and heart failure parameters, and may represent a safe, effective, and cost-saving method compared to conventional in-office follow-up.
Objective: We hypothesized that remote device monitoring represents a cost-effective approach.
Those involved in the asbestos removal is the main category of workers currently exposed to asbestos in the province of Brescia. Although Italy, since 1991, has special rules for the protection of workers exposed to asbestos, improved further by D. Lgs.

In order to verify the state of the art and effectiveness of prevention measures implemented by various companies, in recent years have carried out numerous inspections, environmental monitoring and biological. Furthermore, there were in the regional information system diseases reported and/or by the reported health.

They often suffer from serious illnesses and have great difficulty in walking. The aim of our study was to compare remote pacemaker monitoring with in-home checks of pacemakers, in terms of applicability, efficacy, and cost in a selected population of debilitated elderly patients.

Fire is considered an important factor in influencing the physiognomy, dynamics and composition of Neotropical savannas. Species of diverse physiognomies exhibit different responses to fire, such as population persistence and seed mortality, according to the fire frequency to which they are submitted. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of heat shocks on seed germination of Anadenanthera macrocarpa (Benth.

We quantified their importance among the different subjects involved in the treatment.
Methods: Pre- and postoperative patients (pts), their relatives and vascular surgeons completed questionnaires evaluating six treatment characteristics: anaesthesia; recovery time to basic everyday activities; risk of re-intervention at 5 years (RR); complexity of follow-up; risk of major complications; and additional cost of intervention (AC).

Aristolochiaceae have been described as having seeds with underdeveloped embryos and morphological or morphophysiological dormancy. Aristolochia galeata is a native climber found in the Cerrado biome, associated with road and gallery forest edges. The aims of this study were to investigate: embryo growth rate, morphology and seed germination parameters under different treatments.

Methods: An economic evaluation was conducted to compare benefits and costs of sVLPD versus dialysis in elderly CKD5 patients.
Despite modern highly efficacious technologies, there is still a lack of consensus on how to optimally treat haemophilia patients with inhibitors. The aim of the study was to evaluate preferences towards the characteristics of different coagulation factor concentrates for haemophilia inhibitors patients, from the perspective of patients or their caregivers, haematologists and pharmacists. A discrete choice study was conducted.

Background: Low-potassium (LP) solution with Dextran (Dx) improves lung preservation. Nevertheless, the role of Dx in simple cold storage is not established yet. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between molecular weight and concentration of Dx in LP solutions and its effects on cell viability after prolonged hypothermic preservation.
