The marking of DNA, histones, and RNA is central to gene expression regulation in development and disease. Recent evidence links N6-methyladenosine (mA), installed on RNA by the METTL3-METTL14 methyltransferase complex, to histone modifications, but the link between mA and DNA methylation remains scarcely explored. This study shows that METTL3-METTL14 recruits the DNA methyltransferase DNMT1 to chromatin for gene-body methylation.

Prevalence and Associations of Xerostomia in Older Adults in Southern Brazil.

Objectives: This study investigated the prevalence and associations of xerostomia in older adults in southern Brazil.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Pelotas, Brazil, during 2014. A representative sample of the city's older adult population (60+) was selected.

Effects of instructional therapeutic play in the behavior of children during the first attempt at intravenous catheterization.

Objective: To verify the effects of instructional therapeutic play on the behavior of children during the first attempt at peripheral intravenous catheterization.

Method: This is a quasi-experimental post hoc analysis with a non-equivalent control group, secondary to a randomized clinical trial. The convenience sample comprised 193 children, allocated for convenience into an intervention group (preparation for catheterization with a therapeutic play; n=101 children) and a control group (preparation with structured conversation supported by the use of a booklet; n=92 children).

Serological Evidence of Hantavirus in Bats from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest: An Investigation of Seroreactivity and Cross-Reactivity of Neotropical Bat Samples Using Nucleoproteins of Rodent- and Bat-Borne Hantaviruses.

Hantaviruses are zoonotic pathogens associated with severe human diseases such as hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Despite the extensive study of rodent-borne hantaviruses, research on bat-associated hantaviruses remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence and cross-reactivity of neotropical bat samples with rodent- and bat-associated recombinant hantavirus nucleoproteins (rNPs) to improve hantavirus surveillance in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

Proposal for the implementation and monitoring of a health care nursing protocol for patients with external ventricular drains.

Objective: To structure a proposal for implementing and monitoring the nursing care protocol for the safety of adult patients with external ventricular drains.

Method: Descriptive exploratory research based on Implementation Science, with intentional sampling. Carried out in a hospital complex in southern Brazil, between May and December 2022, in four stages: online questionnaire on knowledge of care for patients with external ventricular shunt for nurses; matrix of proposed indicators with key actors; self-instructional online course for nurses; synthesis of the existing protocol.

Convergent evolution: What do cats, catnip, aphids, and mosquitoes have in common?

The well-known English naturalist John Ray wrote more than 200 years ago about the curious reaction of cats to a plant in the mint or Lamiaceae family, the catnip plant . Ray even wrote a short verse about the relationship between cats and catnip: 'If you set it the cats will eat it; If you sow it the cats can't know it' (Considine 2016). When leaves of this plant are bruised and release their volatiles, cats react by attempting to rub and roll over on the leaves, seeming to be in a state of ecstasy.

MIBiG 4.0: advancing biosynthetic gene cluster curation through global collaboration.

Specialized or secondary metabolites are small molecules of biological origin, often showing potent biological activities with applications in agriculture, engineering and medicine. Usually, the biosynthesis of these natural products is governed by sets of co-regulated and physically clustered genes known as biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). To share information about BGCs in a standardized and machine-readable way, the Minimum Information about a Biosynthetic Gene cluster (MIBiG) data standard and repository was initiated in 2015.

Renal Function Markers Predicts Extubation Failure in Critically Ill Patients: A Retrospective Study.

Several studies attempt to identify predictors for weaning and extubation from mechanical ventilation (MV) and none have been shown to be particularly accurate. Therefore, the objective of the study was to evaluate whether markers of renal function may be associated with extubation failure. This retrospective study collected data through electronic medical records for 2 consecutive years.

Modulation of starch-based film properties for encapsulation of microbial inoculant.

Controlled release of beneficial microorganisms in agriculture by encapsulation in biopolymeric matrices can improve biofertilizer efficacy, but it requires the modulation of properties to ensure more efficient and predictable release patterns. This study investigated the effect of a starch-based system to protect and release Priestia megaterium (former Bacillus megaterium) processed as films modified with potential cell-protective additives (maltodextrin, cellulose, and bentonite). The release kinetics, physicochemical and morphological film characteristics, and their protection against UV (Ultraviolet) radiation and temperature were evaluated.

Chemical diversity of cyanobacterial natural products.

Covering: 2010 to 2023Cyanobacterial natural products are a diverse group of molecules with promising biotechnological applications. This review examines the chemical diversity of 995 cyanobacterial metabolites reported from 2010 to 2023. A computational analysis using similarity networking was applied to visualize the chemical space and to compare the diversity of cyanobacterial metabolites among taxonomic orders and environmental sources.

Increased antinuclear (anti-Sm) antibodies in infertile patients with peritoneal endometriosis.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the intensity of five antibodies against extractable nuclear antigens (ENA: RNP, ScL-70, SS-B, SS-A, and Sm) in infertile patients with endometriosis.

Methods: We investigated infertile women with minimal/mild endometriosis (n=43) and fertile women (n=46).

Results: The intensity of immunoreactions was also similar for anti-RNP and anti-SS-A antibodies.

Interdisciplinary perspectives on accessing specialty evidence-based treatment for Medicaid-insured adolescents with eating disorders.

Background: Family-based treatment (FBT), the leading intervention for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN), is severely understudied in outpatient care settings that serve publicly-insured populations. Many individuals with public insurance are lower-income, racially and ethnically diverse, and experience barriers to accessing evidence-based interventions for eating disorders (EDs).

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten interdisciplinary providers who provide specialty care to youth with EDs in an inpatient and/or outpatient medical setting.

Background: The "Serra da Concórdia" is part of the Atlantic Forest phytogeographical domain in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro and it has a predominant phytophysiognomy of Semideciduous Seasonal Forest. This region underwent intense habitat loss and fragmentation during the 19 century, due to coffee plantations and later pastures. With the decline of these activities, the areas were abandoned, triggering secondary succession.

Nursing care for adult patients with chest drainage: a scoping review.

Objective:: To map the nursing care recommended for adult patients undergoing chest drainage.

Method:: Scoping review. Included studies in Portuguese, English and Spanish, with no time frame, which answered the research question: what nursing care is indicated for adult patients with chest drainage admitted to intensive care? Selection in the MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase/Elsevier, Web of Science/Clarivate, Scopus/Elsevier, CINAHL/Ebsco and LILACS/BVS databases.
