Therefore, this work sought to compare the costs of nutrients provided by typical foods found in the Brazilian diet.

Purpose: To assess out-of-field doses in radiotherapy treatments of paediatric patients, using Monte Carlo methods to implement a new model of the linear accelerator validated against measurements and developing a voxelized anthropomorphic paediatric phantom.

Methods: CT images of a physical anthropomorphic paediatric phantom were acquired and a dosimetric planning using a TPS was obtained. The CT images were used to perform the voxelization of the physical phantom using the ImageJ software and later implemented in MCNP.

Many obese patients are exposed to hypolipidemic and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) drugs. Statins are one of the most marketed drugs in the world to treat dyslipidemia, while sibutramine, a SNRI drug, is prescribed in some countries to treat obesity and is detected as an additive in many adulterated weight loss supplements marketed worldwide. Previous studies reported adverse effects of isolated exposure to these drugs on male rat reproductive parameters.

Ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, inhibits the activity of cyclooxygenase enzyme, leading to reduction in Prostaglandin E (PGE) production. Due to the importance of PGE in promoting the brain masculinization in male fetus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of in utero and lactational exposure to ibuprofen and their late repercussions on reproductive parameters in male rats. Pregnant rats were exposed to ibuprofen (10, 30 or 60 mg/kg) or vehicle (control group) per gavage daily from gestational day 15 to day 21 after birth, and late reproductive effects were assessed during the sexual development and in the reproductive adult life in the male offspring.

Aims: There is a pancreatic islet adaptation in obese subjects, resulting in insulin resistance and diabetes type 2. We studied the effect of intermittent fasting (IntF) on the islet structure of diet-induced obese (DIO) mice.

Methods: Three-month-old male mice fed a control diet (C, 10% Kcal fat) or a high-fat diet (HF, 50% Kcal fat) for two months (n = 20 each group).

Alzheimer's disease and sleep disturbances: a review.

The association between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and sleep disturbances has received increasing scientific attention in the last decades. However, little is known about the impact of sleep and its disturbances on the development of preclinical AD stages, such as mild cognitive impairment. This review describes the evolution of knowledge about the potential bidirectional relationships between AD and sleep disturbances exploring recent large prospective studies and meta-analyses and studies of the possible mechanisms through which sleep and the neurodegenerative process could be associated.

Small-angle scattering (SAS) of X-rays and neutrons is a fundamental tool to study the nanostructural properties, and in particular, biological macromolecules in solution. In structural biology, SAS recently transformed from a specialization into a general technique leading to a dramatic increase in the number of publications reporting structural models. The growing amount of data recorded and published has led to an urgent need for a global SAS repository that includes both primary data and models.

Diagnostic and Prognostic Performance of Blood Plasma Glycan Features in the Women Epidemiology Lung Cancer (WELCA) Study.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women living in the United States, which accounts for approximately the same percentage of cancer deaths in women as breast, ovary, and uterine cancers combined. Targeted blood plasma glycomics represents a promising source of noninvasive diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for lung cancer. Here, 208 samples from lung cancer patients and 207 age-matched controls enrolled in the Women Epidemiology Lung Cancer (WELCA) study were analyzed by a bottom-up glycan "node" analysis approach.

Clinical attachment loss and molecular profile of inflamed sites before treatment.

Objective: To monitor early periodontal disease progression and to investigate clinical and molecular profile of inflamed sites by means of crevicular fluid and gingival biopsy analysis.

Methodology: Eighty-one samples of twenty-seven periodontitis subjects and periodontally healthy individuals were collected for the study. Measurements of clinical parameters were recorded at day -15, baseline and 2 months after basic periodontal treatment aiming at monitoring early variations ofthe clinical attachment level.

Climate change is amongst the main threats to biodiversity. Considering extant mammals endured Quaternary climate change, we analyzed the extent to which this past change predicts current mammals' extinction risk at global and biogeographical scales. We accessed range dynamics by modeling the potential distribution of all extant terrestrial mammals in the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 21,000 years ago) and in current climate conditions and used extinction risk from IUCN red list.

A CAD/CAM-based strategy for concurrent endodontic and restorative treatment.

This case report describes a technique in which endodontic treatment and permanent indirect restoration were completed in the same clinical appointment with the aid of a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system. Two patients were diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis of the mandibular first molar. After access preparation, root canals were located, irrigation was performed until bleeding ceased, and the coronal tooth structure was prepared for indirect restoration.

Background: We analyzed the dietary patterns of Brazilian individuals with a self-declared diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and explored associations with treatment modality.

Methods: Weekly consumption of 14 food intake markers was analyzed in 839 individuals from the 2013 Brazil National Health Survey with a self-declared diagnosis of CKD undergoing nondialysis ( = 480), dialysis ( = 48), or renal transplant ( = 17) treatment or no CKD treatment ( = 294). Dietary patterns were derived by exploratory factor analysis of food intake groups.

Here, we compared isolated from commercial broiler and backyard chickens ( = 111) with ExPEC isolated from patients with community- or hospital-acquired UTI or BSI ( = 149) from Southeast Brazil. Isolates were genotyped by multilocus sequence typing, tested for susceptibility to antimicrobial agents, and screened for β-lactamase genes.

Lipid rafts are highly ordered membrane microdomains enriched in cholesterol, glycosphingolipids, and certain proteins. They are involved in the regulation of cellular processes in diverse cell types, including mast cells (MCs). To assess the effect of dentin irradiation with Er,Cr:YSGG or diode lasers on the bond strength of fiber posts using self-adhesive resin cement. Sixty bovine root canals were root-canal treated, post spaces were prepared, and subsequently fiber posts were cemented.
