Background And Hypothesis: The contact system (CAS) is a part of both the immune system and the coagulation system. The involvement of the CAS in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hemodialysis (HD) has been documented, yet conflicting findings have hindered a comprehensive understanding. This study aimed to investigate whether CAS activation occurs in patients with chronic kidney failure undergoing HD compared with those undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), patients with CKD not receiving replacement therapy, or healthy controls and to assess the impact of HD on CAS from pre- to post-dialysis during a single session of HD.

This paper introduces a novel design for a liquid-deployed Piezoelectric Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer (PMUT). This design was specifically developed to resonate at a lower ultrasonic frequency than a PMUT with a circular, fully clamped diaphragm with the same diameter. Furthermore, the novel design was also optimised to enhance its ultrasonic radiation reception capabilities.

Detecting bacterial cells with high specificity in deep tissues is challenging. Optical probes provide specificity, but are limited by the scattering and absorption of light in biological tissues. Conversely, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows unfettered access to deep tissues, but lacks contrast agents for detecting specific bacterial strains.

Background: Clinical features of diabetic kidney disease alone cannot differentiate between the histopathology that defines diabetic nephropathy (DN) and non-diabetic nephropathy (NDN). A kidney biopsy is necessary to make the definitive diagnosis of DN. However, there is no consensus on when to perform a kidney biopsy in individuals with diabetes and kidney disease.

Crystallization of bisphenol A (DGEBA)- and bisphenol F (DGEBF)-based epoxy resins is a natural property of these oligomers. However, manufacturers of coatings and other systems based on these epoxy resins are making efforts to slow down the crystallization process as much as possible, thereby extending the shelf life and improving the competitiveness of their products. This paper focuses on the kinetics of the crystallization process of epoxy resins and the effect of the presence of a certain degree of crystallinity on selected parameters of epoxy-based materials.

Introduction: Diabetic kidney disease is a severe complication of diabetes. The diagnosis is based on clinical characteristics such as persistently elevated albuminuria, hypertension and decline in kidney function, although this definition is not specific to kidney disease caused by diabetes. The only way to establish an accurate diagnosis-diabetic nephropathy-is by performing a kidney biopsy.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neuromuscular disease mostly resulting from a complex interplay between genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. Common genetic variants in the Sec1 Family Domain Containing 1 (SCFD1) gene have been associated with increased ALS risk in the most extensive genome-wide association study (GWAS). SCFD1 was also identified as a top-most significant expression Quantitative Trait Locus (eQTL) for ALS.

Background: Vaccine hesitancy is common among incarcerated populations and, despite vaccination programs, vaccine acceptance within residents remains low, especially within jails. With the goal of assessing the Connecticut DOC's COVID-19 vaccine program within jails we examined if residents of DOC operated jails were more likely to become vaccinated following incarceration than in the community. Specifically, we conducted a retrospective cohort analysis among people who spent at least one night in a DOC-operated jail between February 2 and November 8, 2021, and were eligible for vaccination at the time of incarceration (intake).

Objective: Emergency interim guidance from the British Society for Gastroenterology (BSG) states that a no-biopsy strategy is possible to diagnose coeliac disease (CD) in adults with elevated transglutaminase IgA antibody (TGA-IgA) levels. We aimed to determine if the suggested TGA-IgA ≥10× ULN is safe and robust in making the diagnosis in adult patients in Scotland. We also aimed to establish if any important co-diagnoses would be missed if no biopsy was performed.
