Objectives: The strategic importance of healthcare research institutes (HRIs) in health sciences research in Spain has motivated this analysis of the feasibility of studing their contribution to the Spanish scientific output through their presence as a signatory institution in the publications.
Material And Methods: We identified the output of the HRIs in the Web of Science database, comparing their observed output (the institutes are explicitly listed in the authors' workplace) and potential output (estimated based on the linked hospitals).
Results And Conclusions: The studies based on scientific publications do not help us reliably identify the contribution of the HRIs because their observed production is much lower than the potential output, although their visibility tends to increase over time.
Scientific authorship has important implications in science since it reflects the contribution to research of the different individual scientists and it is considered by evaluation committees in research assessment processes. This study analyses the order of authorship in the scientific output of 1,064 permanent scientists at the Spanish CSIC (WoS, 1994-2004). The influence of age, professional rank and bibliometric profile of scientists over the position of their names in the byline of publications is explored in three different research areas: Biology and Biomedicine, Materials Science and Natural Resources.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis paper focuses on the study of self-citations at the meso and micro (individual) levels, on the basis of an analysis of the production (1994-2004) of individual researchers working at the Spanish CSIC in the areas of Biology and Biomedicine and Material Sciences. Two different types of self-citations are described: author self-citations (citations received from the author him/herself) and co-author self-citations (citations received from the researchers' co-authors but without his/her participation). Self-citations do not play a decisive role in the high citation scores of documents either at the individual or at the meso level, which are mainly due to external citations.

Objectives: The incidence of interdisciplinarity (ID) in Spanish cardiovascular research teams was analyzed and scientists' opinions about interdisciplinary relationships were examined.
Methods: The data analyzed were obtained in a survey sent in 1999 to a sample of 310 researchers. They were selected using bibliometric techniques and/or for being research project leaders in recent years.
The scope of bibliometric studies is the treatment and quantitative analysis of scientific publications. They belong to the so-called "social studies of science", and science policy constitutes one of its main applied fields. These studies efficiently complement the opinions and judgements of experts, thus providing objective and useful tools for evaluating the results of scientific activity.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction And Objectives: A bibliometric analysis of the Spanish scientific production in the Cardiovascular research area constitutes a useful approach to the study of the scientific activity conducted in the field. The most relevant aspects of the research and their evolution over time are analysed.
Material And Methods: Publications covered by the Science Citation Index database under the heading "cardiovascular system" during the years 1990-1996 and signed by at least one Spanish address were studied.
Background: Bibliometric analyses at the research team level in the pharmacology and pharmacy (F&F) subfield allow in-depth analysis of the findings obtained at higher aggregation levels.
Material And Methods: Publications of Spanish authors in pharmacological journals covered by the Science Citation Index (SCI) are studied and the most productive Spanish teams during 1986-1989 and 1990-1993 are identified through in-house programmes based on co-authorship analysis. Team composition is defined and team size, scientific output, productivity, expected impact factor and collaboration pattern of the most productive teams are analysed as well as its evolution over time.
Background: In 1993 a first study on the scientific production of Spain in 1986-1989 on Biomedicine and Health Sciences, through the Science Citation Index (SCI) was published. The analysis attained the level of centres, with special emphasis in those related to the Health Care System. This paper analyses the period 1990-1993, offers a wider coverage including the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) database, and compares both time periods.

Background: During the last years, the usefulness and validity of bibliometric analyses in complementing other types of indicators has been put forward. Especially interesting is the performance of this type of studies in the pharmacological area, due to the important medical and economic repercusions of the research in this field.
Methods: Documents of Spanish authors published in international pharmacological journals covered by the database Science Citation Index (1980-1989) were downloaded.
