Risk factors and prevention strategies for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in transplant recipients.

It has been well established that organ transplant recipients (OTRs) are at an increased risk of skin cancer. Studies vary on the exact degree of this risk, but it is likely somewhere between 60 and 100 times more likely that an OTR patient will develop skin cancer. The management of skin cancer burden in OTRs requires a multidisciplinary approach with the transplant team, dermatologists, and oncology.

Sweet syndrome with pulmonary involvement in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome.

We report a patient with Sweet syndrome involving the pulmonary system in the context of myelodysplastic syndrome. Although Sweet syndrome may involve a variety of organ systems, the pulmonary system is rarely affected and can result in poor clinical outcomes, including acute respiratory distress syndrome. Both cutaneous and pulmonary symptoms respond well to systemic corticosteroid therapy and early diagnosis and treatment can improve the prognosis.

Objective: To determine the influence of orthopedic examination on numerical rating score (NRS) and visual analog score (VAS) when scoring lameness in dogs with elbow osteoarthritis (OA) and to evaluate interobserver and intraobserver agreement in NRS and VAS on the basis of video-graphic gait analysis.

Design: Prospective blinded study.

Multiple apocrine hidrocystomas successfully treated with botulinum toxin A.

Apocrine hidrocystomas, while rare, present predominantly as solitary papules occurring in the periocular region of the face. Various treatment modalities for these lesions exist depending on their size and location, but the management of multiple hidrocystomas can be more challenging. Recent reports illustrate that multiple eccrine hidrocystomas have been successfully treated with botulinum toxin A.

Mechanically tunable optical filters with a microring resonator.

A new type of optical filter based on mechanical tuning and a microring resonator is proposed. The proposed filter is expected to consume much less standing power compared to the conventional thermo-optic and carrier-injection tunable filters. In this work, two methods are used to prove the concept of the proposed device: (1) the analytical method and (2) the finite-difference time-domain method.

An in vitro mechanical comparison of tibial plateau levelling osteotomy plates.

An in vitro mechanical study was performed to compare the fatigue properties and the loads to failure of four plate designs that are used to stabilise the tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO). Seventy-two gapped osteotomy models were created using 3.5 mm versions of the following plates: a standard TPLO plate, a low profile TPLO plate, a locking TPLO plate (LocP), and a broad locking TPLO plate (bLocP).

Surgical removal of a Cuterebra larva from the cervical trachea of a cat.

A case of cervical intratracheal cuterebriasis is reported. The cat was presented with intermittent dyspnea of 3 days' duration. The larva was located during tracheoscopy but was not retrievable.

Human adenovirus type 36 enhances glucose uptake in diabetic and nondiabetic human skeletal muscle cells independent of insulin signaling.

Objective: Human adenovirus type 36 (Ad-36) increases adiposity but improves insulin sensitivity in experimentally infected animals. We determined the ability of Ad-36 to increase glucose uptake by human primary skeletal muscle (HSKM) cells.

Research Design And Methods: The effect of Ad-36 on glucose uptake and cell signaling was determined in HSKM cells obtained from type 2 diabetic and healthy lean subjects.

Use of a titanium mesh for cranioplasty following radical rostrotentorial craniectomy to remove an ossifying fibroma in a dog.

Case Description: A 6-year-old Australian Terrier was evaluated for surgical removal of an ossifying fibroma of the left calvarium of 7 months' duration.

Clinical Findings: Computed tomography revealed invasion of the mass through the left parietal bone and extension into the epidural space of the brain.

Treatment And Outcome: A left rostrotentorial and frontal bone craniectomy was performed, and the mass was removed, along with a 1-cm margin of grossly normal bone.

The interaction between DNA and a benzothiazole-quinoline cyanine dye with a trimethine bridge (TO-PRO-3) results in the formation of three noncovalent complexes. Unbound TO-PRO-3 has an absorption maximum (lambda(max)) of 632 nm, while the bound dyes (with calf thymus DNA) have electronic transitions with lambda(max) = 514 nm (complex I), 584 nm (complex II) and 642 nm (complex III). The blue shifts in the electronic transitions and the bisignate shape of the circular dichroism bands indicate that TO-PRO-3 aggregates with DNA.
