Leukemia is a prevalent cancer that severely affects children, and standard chemotherapy often leads to severe gastrointestinal symptoms and neutropenia. This study aimed to discover alternative treatments to prevent neutropenia in pediatric leukemia patients and minimize chemotherapy-related complications. This randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted on 52 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years who were suffering from acute leukemia and undergoing chemotherapy.

Identifying COVID-19 patients' clinical phenotypes based on characteristics and comorbidities, as well as their differences, helps in terms of clinical care and potential crises. Our goal is to use Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to identify COVID-19 patient profiles based on demographics, symptoms, and comorbidities, and evaluate their correlation with ICU admission, hospitalization duration, and mortality in a cross-sectional study. We included hospitalized patients with positive SARS-CoV-2 tests in two referral hospitals in the south of Iran between January 2020 and July 2021.

To discriminate between different alcoholic, aldehyde, and ester species of urine samples, a colorimetric sensor array consisting of dopamine-capped copper-silver bimetallic nanoparticles (Ag@Cu BMNPs) combined with 12 organic dyes is introduced. Based on the sensing mechanism, the nanozyme catalyzed the reactions of oxidation, dehydrogenation, and hydrolysis of volatile organic compounds. The products could alter the amount of hydronium ions in the detection media, making a variation in the color intensity of pH-sensitive indicators.

Purpose: Patients who receive frequent blood transfusions are at an elevated risk of developing hepatic fibrosis due to iron overload in the liver. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of transient elastography (TE) (FibroScan) for assessing liver fibrosis in patients with pediatric cancer.

Methods: We enrolled 106 consecutive cases of acute leukemia in individuals under 21 years of age.

Objective: Anthracycline administration in children is associated with cardiac dysfunction. Speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) can detect subclinical cardiac damage that may go undetected by conventional two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography. This study aims to investigate medium-term anthracycline cardiotoxicity using STE and determine a safer administrable level of anthracyclines (ACs).

This meta-analysis evaluated the impact of prophylactic post-chemotherapy granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Overall, the relapse rate, overall survival, event-free survival, and mortality rate were similar in G-CSF (+) compared to G-CSF (-) patients. However, the relative risk (RR) of relapse was higher in children and in secondary AML patients who were treated with G-CSF compared to the G-CSF (-) group [RR, 95% confidence interval: 1.

Background: Development of antibodies against infused Factor VIII (FVIII) or "inhibitors" represents a major challenge following FVIII replacement therapy in patients with hemophilia A (HA). Recent studies have shown that certain cellular compartments of the immune system contribute to the production of such antibodies. Herein, we determined the frequency of class-switched CD19IgDCD27/non-class-switched CD19IgDCD27 memory B cell subsets and CD19CD27CD38 plasmablasts in patients with severe HA and their association with the development of inhibitors in these patients.

Coastal aquifer vulnerability assessment (CAVA) studies are essential for mitigating the effects of seawater intrusion (SWI) worldwide. In this research, the vulnerability of the coastal aquifer in the Lahijan region of northwest Iran was investigated. A vulnerability map (VM) was created applying hydrogeological parameters derived from the original GALDIT model (OGM).

Objective: To determine the prevalence of iron overload in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) after treatment cessation and establish a cutoff value for serum ferritin level as an indicator of iron overload.

Background: Early detection and monitoring of iron overload in patients with leukemia is crucial.

Methods: In this prospective cohort study, 66 pediatric patients with ALL who were treated at a tertiary referral center affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Shiraz, Southern Iran, were investigated from July 2020 to December 2022.

Background: Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is a patient-friendly and non-invasive technology that scans the whole of the gastrointestinal tract, including difficult-to-access regions like the small bowel. Major drawback of this technology is that the visual inspection of a large number of video frames produced during each examination makes the physician diagnosis process tedious and prone to error. Several computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems, such as deep network models, have been developed for the automatic recognition of abnormalities in WCE frames.

This study examined coastal aquifer vulnerability to seawater intrusion (SWI) in the Shiramin area in northwest Iran. Here, six types of hydrogeological data layers existing in the traditional GALDIT framework (TGF) were used to build one vulnerability map. Moreover, a modified traditional GALDIT framework (mod-TGF) was prepared by eliminating the data layer of aquifer type from the GALDIT model and adding the data layers of aquifer media and well density.

Article Synopsis
  • Teratomas are abnormal growths that can occur in various areas of the body, including the abdomen, and are important to identify in children as they resemble other tumors like Wilms' and neuroblastoma.
  • A case of an infant boy showed symptoms of an enlarging abdominal mass, which was found to be compressing the left ureter and causing hydronephrosis due to obstruction.
  • After surgical removal, the diagnosis was confirmed as an immature teratoma grade 3, indicating that while rare, these tumors can have significant impacts on health and require proper diagnosis and intervention.

The rapid decline in both quality and availability of freshwater resources on our planet necessitates their thorough assessment to ensure sustainable usage. The growing demand for water in industrial, agricultural, and domestic sectors poses significant challenges to managing both surface and groundwater resources. This study tests and proposes a hybrid evaluation approach to determine Groundwater Quality Indices (GQIs) for irrigation (IRRI), seawater intrusion (SWI), and potability (POT), finalized to the spatial distribution of groundwater suitability involving water quality indicator along with hydrogeological and socio-economic factors.

The increasing population of diabetic patients, especially in developing countries, has posed a serious risk to the health sector, so that the lack of timely diagnosis and treatment process of diabetes can lead to threatening complications for the human lifestyle. Here, a multiple sensor was fabricated on a paper substrate for rapid detection and controlling the progress of the diabetes disease. The proposed sensor utilized the sensing ability of porphyrazines, pH-sensitive dyes and silver nanoparticles in order to detect the differences in saliva composition of diabetic and non-diabetic patients.

The hydrogen peroxide (HO) measurement is considered highly important in industrial wastewater quality assessment, environmental protection, and disease detection. Here, a simple high-performance paper-based sensor is proposed for rapid and in situ detection of HO. To this end, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine is embedded in the sensor to act as a color indicator, whose reaction with hydrogen peroxide is catalyzed by a silver nanozyme modified by sericin.

Background: Cardiotoxicity is a major concern following doxorubicin (DOX) use in the treatment of malignancies. We aimed to investigate whether deferoxamine (DFO) can prevent acute cardiotoxicity in children with cancer who were treated with DOX as part of their chemotherapy.

Results: Sixty-two newly-diagnosed pediatric cancer patients aged 2-18 years with DOX as part of their treatment regimens were assigned to three groups: group 1 (no intervention, n = 21), group II (Deferoxamine (DFO) 10 times DOX dose, n = 20), and group III (DFO 50 mg/kg, n = 21).
