Groundwater near swine farms is an uninvestigated reservoir for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine circoviruses (PCVs). Enteric microorganisms are often collected from groundwater via dead-end ultrafiltration, but recovery of PRRSV and PCV with this method has not been assessed. We recovered PRRSV2 and PCV2 by dead-end ultrafiltration followed by polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation, nucleic acid extraction, and reverse-transcription quantitative real-time PCR.

In particular, we discuss the excitation of Alfvén eigenmodes in electron cyclotron heated plasmas in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. In more than 700 experimental programs of W7-X Operational Phase 1.

Rural residents of southwestern Wisconsin, USA, rely on private well water, and the combination of land use and fractured carbonate bedrock makes groundwater vulnerable to contamination. To identify the extent, sources, and risk factors of private well contamination, randomly selected wells sampled during two-day periods in fall (n = 301) and spring (n = 529) were analyzed for nitrate and indicator bacteria, and a subset (n = 138) was sampled across four seasonal events for analysis of pathogens and microbial source tracking markers by quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

Human enteric viruses can remain infective in surface waters for extended periods of time, posing a public health risk. Microbial activity contributes to the inactivation of waterborne enteric viruses, but while individual bacteria-virus interactions have been characterized, the importance of microbial diversity remains unknown. Here, we experimentally manipulated the diversity of bacterial communities from Lake Geneva across three seasons using a dilution-to-extinction approach and monitored the inactivation and genome decay of echovirus 11, a member of the genus.

We compared the use of Bacteroides-based exposure assessment to exposure assessment that relied on pathogen measurements. We considered two types of recreational water sites: those impacted by combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and those not impacted by CSOs.

The study evaluates the psychometric properties of the new (DISEX-F), which is based on the eleventh edition of the (ICD-11) and the fifth edition of the (DSM-5), in a sample of 100 women with self-reported sexual problems. Participants were interviewed twice by trained diagnosticians with the DISEX-F.

A synthetic Mirnov diagnostic has been developed to investigate the capabilities and limitations of an arrangement of Mirnov coils in terms of a mode analysis. Eight test cases have been developed, with different coil arrangements and magnetic field configurations. Three of those cases are experimental configurations of the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X.

Genes were quantified with five human-specific and six bovine-specific microbial source-tracking (MST) markers in 138 well-water samples from a rural Wisconsin county. Daily ingestion risk (probability of swallowing ≥1 gene) was based on daily water consumption and a Poisson exposure model.

Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection was installed on all supply wells of intervention communities. In control communities, residents continued to drink non-disinfected groundwater.

The Wells and Enteric disease Transmission trial is the first randomised controlled trial to estimate the burden of disease that can be attributed to the consumption of untreated private well water. To estimate the attributable incidence of gastrointestinal illness (GI) associated with private well water, we will test if the household treatment of well water by ultraviolet light (active UV device) versus sham (inactive UV device) decreases the incidence of GI in children under 5 years of age.

However, few studies address all three components simultaneously. We investigated the occurrence of five antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the class 1 integron gene (intI1) in private wells drawing water from a vulnerable aquifer influenced by residential septic systems and land-applied dairy manure.

Elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor is an oral drug that was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on October 21, 2019, after demonstrating clinical improvements compared with previous CF transmembrane conductance regulator modulators. Use of CF transmembrane conductance regulator modulators has improved CF care, but their high costs exceed commonly used cost-effectiveness thresholds.

However, few groundwater QMRAs use site-specific hazard identification and exposure assessment, so prevailing risks in these systems remain poorly defined. We estimated the infection risk for 9 waterborne pathogens based on a 2-year pathogen occurrence study in which 964 water samples were collected from 145 public wells throughout Minnesota, USA.

Few studies have quantified ARG fate during full-scale digestion of livestock manure. We sampled untreated manure and digestate from seven full-scale mesophilic dairy manure digesters to assess ARG fate through each system.

Sample: 20 dogs and their owners.
Procedures: In this randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled crossover clinical trial, dogs with a history of anxiety during veterinary visits were scheduled for 2 veterinary visits 1 week apart and randomly assigned to receive a single oral dose of either trazodone (9 to 12 mg/kg) or a placebo 90 minutes before transport to the veterinary clinic for alternate visits between September 21 and November 3, 2019.
Relations between spectral absorbance and fluorescence properties of water and human-associated and fecal indicator bacteria were developed for facilitating field sensor applications to estimate wastewater contamination in waterways. Leaking wastewater conveyance infrastructure commonly contaminates receiving waters. Methods to quantify such contamination can be time consuming, expensive, and often nonspecific.

Although the tokamak is the leading toroidal magnetic-confinement concept, it is not without shortcomings and the fusion community has therefore also pursued alternative concepts such as the stellarator. Unlike axisymmetric tokamaks, stellarators possess a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field geometry.

Such data are essential for characterizing interactions and processes of microbial communities, assessing microbial contaminants in the environment (water, air, fomites), and developing interventions (water treatment, surface disinfection, air purification) to curb infectious disease transmission. However, our review of recent qPCR and dPCR literature in our field of health-related environmental microbiology showed that many researchers are not reporting necessary and sufficient controls and methods, which would serve to strengthen their study results and conclusions.

Objectives: We investigated private household wells in the region, determining the extent, sources, and risk factors of nitrate and microbial contamination.
Methods: Total coliforms, , and nitrate were evaluated by synoptic sampling during groundwater recharge and no-recharge periods.
Background: Private wells are an important source of drinking water in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. Due to the region's fractured dolomite aquifer, these wells are vulnerable to contamination by human and zoonotic gastrointestinal pathogens originating from land-applied cattle manure and private septic systems.
Objective: We determined the magnitude of the health burden associated with contamination of private wells in Kewaunee County by feces-borne gastrointestinal pathogens.
Nearly half a billion people living in Indian cities receive their drinking water from an intermittent water supply (IWS), which can be associated with degraded water quality and risk of waterborne disease. The municipal water supply in Nagpur, India is transitioning from intermittent to continuous supply in phases. We conducted cross-sectional sampling to compare microbial water quality under IWS and continuous water supply (CWS) in Nagpur.
