Article Synopsis
  • Surgery is the main treatment for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), but MIBI-avid thyroid nodules can make it hard to find parathyroid adenomas.
  • A 49-year-old woman with hypercalcemia had imaging tests that indicated thyroid nodules, but further scans helped locate an adenoma better.
  • Combining various imaging methods like SPECT/CT and 4D CT is critical for successful surgery and improving results in patients with PHPT.

In this study, we aimed to systematically review the literature to evaluate the effects of magnesium (Mg) supplementation on blood pressure (BP) and obesity measure among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Major electronic databases of Web of Science, the Cochrane library, PubMed, and Scopus were searched completely from the inception until 15 October 2019 to identify randomized clinical trials (RCTs) pertaining to the topic of interest. All outcomes were pooled using a random-effects model and expressed as weighted mean differences (WMD) with 95% confidential intervals (CI).

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer and the third most common cause of cancer death worldwide. The incidence continues to rise and only a detailed surveillance of patients with chronic liver disease can allow an early assessment. Diagnosis is made by imaging techniques, such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and also histopathological examination of biopsy material.

Background: Distinguishing between primary lung adenocarcinoma and metastatic adenocarcinoma of lung before planning patient treatment is clinically important. Immunohistochemical markers play an important role in classification of primary lung tumors and are an effective method for separating metastatic tumors from primary pulmonary carcinoma. In this study, we evaluated the expression of Napsin-A in primary pulmonary carcinoma and some cases of nonpulmonary adenocarcinoma.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has long been present in important guidelines and recommendations for the diagnostic work-up of focal liver lesions in patients with cirrhosis. These guidelines have included the guidelines of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) 2005, the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver consensus recommendations on hepatocellular carcinoma, the recommendations of the Japanese Society of Hepatology, and the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) guidelines 2004, 2008 and 2012 (in preparation). Recently, the AASLD removed CEUS from their guidelines in part because of the perceived possibility of false-positive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnosis in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), and in part because CEUS is not available in the USA.

Vaccination using DCs pulsed with tumor lysates or specific tumor-associated peptides has so far yielded limited clinical success for cancer treatment, due mainly to the low immunogenicity of tumor-associated antigens. In this study, we have identified intratumoral virus-induced inflammation as a precondition for effective antitumor DC vaccination in mice. Administration of a tumor-targeted DC vaccine during ongoing virus-induced tumor inflammation, a regimen referred to as oncolysis-assisted DC vaccination (ODC), elicited potent antitumoral CD8+ T cell responses.

Background And Aims: Viral infection of a dying cell dictates the immune response against intracellular antigens, suggesting that virotherapy may be an effective tool to induce immunogenic cell death during systemic cancer treatment. Since viruses and proteasome inhibitors both induce accumulation of misfolded proteins, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and immune responses during treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with bortezomib and the tumour-specifically replicating virus hTert-Ad (human telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter-regulated adenovirus) were investigated.

Methods: Unfolded protein response (UPR) pathways and ER stress-mediated apoptosis were investigated by western blots, caspase-3 assays, 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) and Annexin V staining in HCC cells following hTert-Ad/bortezomib treatment.
