Background: In the United States, most school-aged children participate in some form of organized sports. Despite the advantages to social and physical development that organized sports may have, these activities also place a significant number of America's youth at risk for facial injuries. Pediatric facial fractures resulting from sports trauma are well documented within pediatric literature.

Factor structure, internal reliability, and construct validity of the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS): A study on persons with serious mental illness living in the community.

Objectives: Resilience, the ability to bounce back from a stressful situation, is a valuable asset for aiding adults with serious mental illness (SMI) in navigating the recovery process. People with SMI experience stress, including traumatic experiences at disproportionate rates. The purposes of this study were to examine the factor structure, internal reliability, and construct validity of the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) among adults with SMI living in the community.

Salvage Therapy with Sofosbuvir/Velpatasvir/Voxilaprevir in DAA-experienced Patients: Results from a Prospective Canadian Registry.

Background: Despite the current highly effective therapies with direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs), some patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection still do not achieve sustained virological response (SVR) and require retreatment. Sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir (SVV) is recommended as the first-line retreatment option for most patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of SVV as salvage therapy after at least one course of DAA.

Systematic review and meta-analysis: SGLT2 inhibitors, blood pressure and cardiovascular outcomes.

Objective: Clinical trials suggest that SGLT2 inhibitors reduce the risk of cardiovascular mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes, however the mechanism is unclear. Our objective was to test the hypothesis that blood pressure reduction is one potential mechanism underlying the observed improvements in cardiovascular outcomes with SGLT2 inhibitors.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (inception-June 2019) for randomized controlled trials that reported the effect of SGLT2 inhibitors compared with placebo on cardiovascular outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Uncovering an allosteric mode of action for a selective inhibitor of human Bloom syndrome protein.

BLM (Bloom syndrome protein) is a RECQ-family helicase involved in the dissolution of complex DNA structures and repair intermediates. Synthetic lethality analysis implicates BLM as a promising target in a range of cancers with defects in the DNA damage response; however, selective small molecule inhibitors of defined mechanism are currently lacking. Here, we identify and characterise a specific inhibitor of BLM's ATPase-coupled DNA helicase activity, by allosteric trapping of a DNA-bound translocation intermediate.

Exercise training and reproductive outcomes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

Objective: Exercise is recommended for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but the most effective exercise prescription is unclear. This trial compared effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), continuous aerobic exercise training (CAET) and no-exercise control on reproductive, anthropometric and cardiometabolic outcomes in PCOS.

Background: Fiducial markers are used as surrogates for tumor location during radiation therapy treatment. Developments in lung fiducial marker and implantation technology have provided a means to insert markers endobronchially for tracking of lung tumors. This study quantifies the surrogacy uncertainty (SU) when using endobronchially implanted markers as a surrogate for lung tumor position.

Introduction: To describe pharmacist interventions as a result of an independent double check during cognitive order verification of outpatient parenteral anti-cancer therapy.

Methods: A single-center, retrospective analysis of all individual orders for outpatient, parenteral anti-cancer agents within a hematology/oncology infusion center during a 30 day period was conducted. The primary endpoint was error identification rates during first and second verification.

Dose-based optimisation for multi-leaf collimator tracking during radiation therapy.

Motion in the patient anatomy causes a reduction in dose delivered to the target, while increasing dose to healthy tissue. Multi-leaf collimator (MLC) tracking has been clinically implemented to adapt dose delivery to account for intrafraction motion. Current methods shift the planned MLC aperture in the direction of motion, then optimise the new aperture based on the difference in fluence.

Background: Youths with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) rely more on lower-level visual processing as revealed by greater occipital activation, yet less effectively engage higher-level processing of modality-independent semantic knowledge as indicated by reduced frontal activation, compared to typically developing (TD) youths. Sentinel animals remain a common means of evaluating rodent health in research colonies. An evaluation of our sentinel program revealed that using Crl:CD1(ICR)-Elite (CD1-E) mice was expensive, occasionally disrupted by limited supply, and minimally responsive to the 3Rs. This evaluation prompted us to explore the use of CRL:NU- (Het-nude) mice as soiled-bedding sentinel (SBS) animals.

Water equivalence of a solid phantom material for radiation dosimetry applications.

Radiological water equivalence of solid phantoms used for radiotherapy is often desired, but is non-trivial to achieve across the range of therapeutic energies. This study evaluated the water equivalence of a new solid phantom material in beam qualities relevant to radiotherapy applications. In-phantom measured depth distributions were compared to that in water to assess the relative attenuation and scatter characteristics of the material.

Analysis of Multidrug Resistance in Staphylococcus aureus with a Machine Learning-Generated Antibiogram.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) surveillance consists of reporting MDR prevalence and MDR phenotypes. Detailed knowledge of the specific associations underlying MDR patterns can allow antimicrobial stewardship programs to accurately identify clinically relevant resistance patterns. We applied machine learning and graphical networks to quantify and visualize associations between resistance traits in a set of 1,091 isolates collected from one New York hospital between 2008 and 2018.

B and T Cell Immunity in Tissues and Across the Ages.

B and T cells are key components of the adaptive immune system and coordinate multiple facets of immunity including responses to infection, vaccines, allergens, and the environment. In humans, B- and T-cell immunity has been determined using primarily peripheral blood specimens. Conversely, human tissues have scarcely been studied but they host multiple adaptive immune cells capable of mounting immune responses to pathogens and participate in tissue homeostasis.

Toward real-time verification for MLC tracking treatments using time-resolved EPID imaging.

Purpose: In multileaf collimator (MLC) tracking, the MLC positions from the original treatment plan are continuously modified to account for intrafraction tumor motion. As the treatment is adapted in real time, there is additional risk of delivery errors which cannot be detected using traditional pretreatment dose verification. The purpose of this work is to develop a system for real-time geometric verification of MLC tracking treatments using an electronic portal imaging device (EPID).

The Feasibility of Collecting Longitudinal Cardiovascular and Fitness Outcomes From a Neighborhood Park-Based Fitness Program in Ethnically Diverse Older Adults: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

This proof-of-concept study examined feasibility of assessing longitudinal changes in body mass index, strength, mobility, and cardiovascular health outcomes in older, racial/ethnic minority adults participating in a park-based physical activity program. Study feasibility was based on follow-through data collection procedures and ability to manage and implement data collection, enrollment, and repeated measures data collection in older adults (≥50 years; n = 380; 45% Hispanic, 41% non-Hispanic Black) over a 28-month period. Mixed models were developed to estimate the effects of program participation over time on participant cardiovascular and fitness outcomes and across poverty and age subgroups.

Previous studies have shown that reading skill in 3- to 6-year-old children is related to the automatic activation of the posterior left ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT) during spoken language processing, whereas 8- to 15-year-old children and adult readers activate the anterior vOT. However, it is unknown how children who are between these two age groups automatically activate orthographic representations in vOT for spoken language. In the current study, we recruited 153 7- to 8-year-old children to fill the age gap from previous studies.

Basic versus biofeedback-mediated intensive pelvic floor muscle training for women with urinary incontinence: the OPAL RCT.

Background: Urinary incontinence affects one in three women worldwide. Pelvic floor muscle training is an effective treatment. Electromyography biofeedback (providing visual or auditory feedback of internal muscle movement) is an adjunct that may improve outcomes.
