The interaction of a resonant light field with a quantum two-level system is of key interest both for fundamental quantum optics and quantum technological applications employing resonant excitation. While emission under resonant continuous-wave excitation has been well studied, the more complex emission spectrum of dynamically dressed states-a quantum two-level system driven by resonant pulsed excitation-has so far been investigated in detail only theoretically. Here, we present the first experimental observation of the complete resonance fluorescence emission spectrum of a single quantum two-level system, in the form of an excitonic transition in a semiconductor quantum dot, driven by finite Gaussian pulses.

Today's healthcare system is facing many challenges, such as changes in the population, a shift from acute to chronic degenerative conditions, and disparities in access and outcomes. An integrative health approach, in combination with interprofessional collaborative practice, is viewed as an effective response to these changing demands. Curricular strategies must be developed and implemented that help prepare health professions students for these ongoing changes in the health delivery system.

We propose a scheme for the generation of highly indistinguishable single photons using semiconductor quantum dots and demonstrate its performance and potential. The scheme is based on the resonant two-photon excitation of the biexciton followed by stimulation of the biexciton to selectively prepare an exciton. Quantum-optical simulations and experiments are in good agreement and show that the scheme provides significant advantages over previously demonstrated excitation methods.

This work characterizes fundamental features of static drip patterns simulated for forensic bloodstain pattern analysis. The purpose of this study was to determine if and how two independent variables, impact velocity and droplet number, influence the parent stain size, shape and satellite spatter distribution of drip patterns created with whole ovine blood. To do this, 500 drip patterns were created in a controlled environment at five varying impact velocities and ten different droplet numbers on a hard paper surface.

Predation has direct impact on prey populations by reducing prey abundance. In addition, predator presence alone can also have non-consumptive effects on prey species, potentially influencing their interspecific interactions and thus the structure of entire assemblages. The performance of potential prey species may, therefore, depend on both the presence of predators and competitors.

In this study, we expand upon the biogeography of biological soil crusts (BSCs) and provide molecular insights into the microbial community and biochemical dynamics along the vertical BSC column structure, and across a transect of increasing BSC surface coverage in the central Mojave Desert, CA, United States. Next generation sequencing reveals a bacterial community profile that is distinct among BSCs in the southwestern United States. Distribution of major phyla in the BSC topsoils included Cyanobacteria (33 ± 8%), Proteobacteria (26 ± 6%), and Chloroflexi (12 ± 4%), with being the numerically dominant genus.

The at-sea distribution of top predators, seabirds and marine mammals, was determined in the high Arctic pack ice on board the icebreaker RV in July to September 2014. In total, 1,620 transect counts were realised, lasting 30 min each. The five most numerous seabird species represented 74% of the total of 15,150 individuals registered: kittiwake , fulmar , puffin , Ross's gull , and little auk .

Phase optimized liquid chromatography (POPLC) allows for the optimized combination of column segments of any length and stationary phases with different functionalities. In this study, a simple and rapid method using POPLC coupled with on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) for the analysis of X-ray contrast media agent iomeprol (IOM) in human plasma was developed. Because the phenyl (PH) stationary phase has strong hydrophobic and π-π interactions with IOM and iopromide (IOP, internal standard), the best separation efficiency was achieved with a 250mm×3mm homogenous PH POPLC-column.

On-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) is becoming an increasingly widespread technique in the clean-up of complex matrices such as body fluids, prior to chromatographic analysis. The use of small SPE columns instead of disposable SPE cartridges allows multiple injections and complete automation. In addition, it decreases the cost of consumables and improves the quality of the overall analysis.

The selective extraction of endogenous serum peptides has been a challenge due to the high abundant proteins present in serum. Here a simple on-line extraction of peptides from human serum using strong cation-exchange diol silica restricted-access materials (SCX-RAM) coupled with two-dimensional RP-RP liquid chromatography mass spectrometry was developed. The operation of the on-line extraction system is simple to use and does not need complex equipments.

As the serum peptidome gets increasing attention for biomarker discovery, one of the important issues is how to efficiently extract the peptides from highly complex human serum for peptidome analysis. Here we developed a fully automated platform for direct injection, on-line extraction, multidimensional separation and MS detection of peptides present in human serum. A capillary SPE column packed with a novel mix mode restricted access material (RAM) exhibiting strong cation exchange and size exclusion chromatography (SCX/SEC) properties were coupled with a nanoliquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (nanoLC-MS) system.

The transfer of analytical methods from a sending laboratory to a receiving one requires to guarantee that this last laboratory will obtain accurate results. Undeniably method transfer is the ultimate step before routine implementation of the method at the receiving site. The conventional statistical approaches generally used in this domain which analyze separately the trueness and precision characteristics of the receiver do not achieve this.

A novel, multidimensional on-line SPE-LC method with electrochemical detection is described for the fully automated and direct analysis of the catecholamines norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine in urine. The integrated extractive clean-up of the raw biofluid is based on a SPE-column packed with restricted access material (RAM) which is modified with the affinity ligand nitrophenylboronic acid. The method was fully validated according to a recent approach based on an accuracy profile.

Despite the advances in therapeutic approaches in the management of inflammatory conditions, the incidence of sepsis is on increase in the intensive care units (ICU). In a pilot study, we investigated whether the use of an apheresis system based on DEAE-cellulose is capable of reducing the plasma concentration of endotoxin in patients with severe sepsis. We enrolled 15 intensive care patients with severe sepsis and plasma endotoxin concentrations >0.

In the framework of a preliminary investigation on the plasma profile of cloxacillin after oral administration, a simple and rapid LC method was developed for the direct determination of this compound in human plasma. The on-line sample clean-up was carried out using a weak anion exchanger (diethylaminoethyl groups) as restricted access material (RAM). The effects of the washing liquid pH, the ionic strength and the addition of organic modifier to the washing liquid were studied in order to obtain an efficient sample clean-up and a high recovery of cloxacillin.

A new, simple and fully automated liquid chromatographic (LC) method with UV detection has been developed for the direct determination of atropine in plasma. Sample clean-up was based on the use of cation exchange restricted access material (RAM) in a pre-column, coupled to LC by means of a column switching system. After direct injection of a 200 microl-volume of plasma sample, the biological matrix was washed out for 10 min using a washing liquid composed of 2 mM lithium perchlorate adjusted to pH 3.

Bacterial colonization is regarded as a causative factor for septic complications of caudal catheters in children. To determine whether tunneling caudal catheters reduces the bacterial colonization rate effectively, we evaluated 506 children being treated with tunneled or untunneled caudal or untunneled lumbar epidural catheters. Four-hundred-nine children completed the study.

A new kind of silica-based restricted-access material (RAM) with anionic properties has been tested in pre-columns for on-line solid-phase extraction of acidic compounds from directly injected plasma samples prior to their determination by reversed-phase liquid chromatography (LC), using the column-switching technique. The outer surface of the porous RAM particles contains hydrophilic diol groups while diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) groups are bound to the internal surface which gives the sorbent the properties of a weak anion exchanger towards low-molecular-mass compounds. Due to an appropriate pore diameter (about 6 nm), macromolecules, such as proteins, are physically excluded from the pores and flushed directly out during the sample clean-up process, while small compounds have access to the inner surface and can be retained mainly by electrostatic interactions.
