Involving participants in the design of clinical trials should improve the overall success of a study. For this to occur, streamlined mechanisms are needed to connect the populations potentially impacted by a given study or health topic with research teams in order to inform trial design in a meaningful and timely manner. To address this need, we developed an innovative mechanism called the "ResearchMatch Expert Advice Tool" that quickly obtains volunteer perspectives from populations with specific health conditions or lived experiences using the national recruitment registry, ResearchMatch.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) and ecosystem services assessment (ESA) are often used for environmental assessment. LCA has been increasingly used over the past two decades to assess agri-food systems and has established that ruminant products have higher impacts per kg of protein than products from monogastric species. Conversely, ESA is used less but is likely to rank ruminant systems higher than monogastric systems, as the former often include grasslands that can provide high levels of regulating ecosystem services (ESs).

This study examines how four diets change nutritionally and environmentally when the diets are nutritionally adjusted. Data on individual Belgian diets of omnivores (n = 131), pescovegetarians (n = 159), vegetarians (n = 494), and vegans (n = 78) were obtained, called non-adjusted diets. We assessed if diets met energy and nutrient intake requirements and calculated the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI)-2010.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how much money is spent on treating brain and nervous system cancers in the U.S. from 1996 to 2016.
  • Spending jumped from $2.72 billion to $6.85 billion, but sadly, more people were still dying from these cancers during that time.
  • The results show that even though more money was spent, it didn’t help people live longer, especially affecting older patients and those with private insurance.

Gastrointestinal toxicities (GITs) are the most prevalent adverse events (AE) reported in clinical trials, often resulting in dose-limitations that reduce drug efficacy and delay development and treatment optimization. Preclinical animal models do not accurately replicate human GI physiology, leaving few options for early detection of GI side effects prior to human studies. Development of an accurate model that predicts GIT earlier in drug discovery programs would better support successful clinical trial outcomes.

Purpose: There is no consensus on how to estimate kidney function for the assessment of eligibility in clinical cancer trials.

Patients And Methods: We recalculated the creatinine clearance (CrCl)/glomerular filtration rate (GFR) at baseline in a total of 1768 patients enrolled in twelve clinical trials using the Cockcroft-Gault (CG), Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), 2021 Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI 2021) and European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) formulas. Patients were classified as having renal impairment (RI; CrCl/GFR <60 mL/min) or no renal impairment (NRI; CrCl/GFR ≥60 mL/min) with each of the four formulas, respectively.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a brain network disorder where pathological proteins accumulate through networks and drive cognitive decline. Yet, the role of network connectivity in facilitating this accumulation remains unclear. Using in-vivo multimodal imaging, we show that the distribution of tau and reactive microglia in humans follows spatial patterns of connectivity variation, the so-called gradients of brain organization.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infects humans and nonhuman primates, typically causing an acute self-limited illness. Three HAV genotypes have been described so far for humans, and three genotypes have been described for nonhuman primates. We observed transiently elevated liver enzymes in Mauritius-origin laboratory-housed macaques in Germany and were not able to demonstrate an etiology including HAV by serology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
