Comparison of Three Groups of Patients Having Low Dose Rate Prostate Brachytherapy: Prostate-Specific Antigen Failure and Overall Survival.

Purpose To examine dosimetric and clinical outcomes for Cs-131 radioactive seed implant compared to Pd-103 and I-125.  Background/Significance Cs-131 is a novel isotope with relatively short half-life (9.7 days) that may have clinical advantages in seed implant treatments of prostate cancers.

Management of Prostate Cancer During COVID-19 Pandemic: Perspective From Urologists and Radiation Oncologists in COVID Dense Metro Detroit.

Objective To survey Urologists and Radiation Oncologists in Metropolitan Detroit regarding practice patterns in managing non-metastatic prostate cancer during the pandemic.  Methods An online survey was created to capture the perspective of the impact the COVID-19 restrictions have on the management of prostate cancer by Urologists and Radiation Oncologists in the Detroit Metropolitan area.  Results While most physicians felt that their facilities had adequate quantities of personal protective equipment (PPE), one in four offices reported that they did not have sufficient access to PPE.

Measurement scale influences in the evaluation of sight-word reading interventions.

Working with elementary students with disabilities, we used alternating treatment designs to evaluate and compare the effects of 2 computer-based flash card sight-word reading interventions, 1 with 1-s response intervals and another with 5-s response intervals. In Study 1, we held instructional time constant, applying both interventions for 3 min. Although students completed 6 learning trials per word during each 1-s session and 2 trials per word during each 5-s session, results showed similar acquisition rates for 1-s and 5-s words.

Learning rates and known-to-unknown flash-card ratios: comparing effectiveness while holding instructional time constant.

Using alternating treatments designs, we compared learning rates across 2 computer-based flash-card interventions (3 min each): a traditional drill intervention with 15 unknown words and an interspersal intervention with 12 known words and 3 unknown words. Each student acquired more words under the traditional drill intervention. Discussion focuses on the need to account for instructional time when learning procedures are evaluated and compared.

The effects of signaling stimulus presentation during noncontingent reinforcement.

The effects of signaling the return of items or attention during treatment with noncontingent reinforcement were examined. First, functional analyses showed that the problem behavior exhibited by 2 teenagers with developmental disabilities was sensitive to social positive reinforcement. Next, delivery of the stimulus that maintained problem behavior on a fixed-time (FT) schedule was compared to a condition in which the removal of the stimulus during the same FT schedule was immediately preceded by a statement indicating that the stimulus would be returned and the initiation of a digital timer.

Complications associated with minimally invasive decompression for lumbar spinal stenosis.

Objective: Surgical strategies for the decompression of lumbar spinal stenosis have evolved to include minimally invasive techniques providing for adequate and safe decompression while reducing perioperative morbidity. Retrospective case series analysis of 220 consecutive patients with lumbar spinal stenosis who underwent microscopic or microendoscopic minimally invasive decompression was performed. The objective was to evaluate the risks associated with performing a minimally invasive decompression for spinal stenosis in a large group of patients.

Assessment of internet use and effects among healthcare professionals: a cross sectional survey.

Purpose: Several studies have explored the scientific platforms on patient use of the internet for health information. In contrast physicians' perspective on evolving internet environment is lacking. The purpose of this study is to assess and correlate the extent of internet use among healthcare professionals and examine its effects on clinical practice.

Time spent with patients and charges to patients for specialty consultations using telemedicine.

The objective of this work was to determine some of the determinants of cost in teleconsultations as compared to face-to-face consultations. Time spent with patients and estimated costs were modeled using time series data from a university Health Science Center located in West Texas. This center provides education, patient care, community service and research to a 109 county area.

Young [16-19 population doubling level (PDL)] and senescing (50-53 PDL) WI-38 cell populations were exposed to 1 ppm ozone for 2 hr and the resultant extracellular and intracellular acid phosphatase concentration was measured. Dose-response curves were also determined for surviving populations of young and old cells after a 1 hr ozone exposure ranging in concentration from 0 to 1.00 ppm.

An improved organ culture method for adult mammalian lung.

An improved method for maintaining adult rat lung in submerged organ culture is described in which the alveoli were inflated with agar and 200-micron-thick hand-cut sections were mounted in Rose chambers. The conventional single-compartmented Rose culture chamber was modified by adding a second chamber separated from the first by a gaspermeable membrane. One compartment functioned as an air reservoir and the other housed the explants submerged in nutrient medium.

Consideration of atherosclerotic plaques as benign neoplasms.

The monoclonal nature of atherosclerotic plaques, as well as their altered cell size, proliferation rate and function have led to the hypothesis that plaque tissue is analogous to benign tumors. To test this hypothesis, we have studied rates of DNA release by histologically-normal human arterial wall tissue and by early atherosclerotic plaques during incubation in a maintenance medium. No DNA was detected in media conditioned by normal arterial tissue after a 24 h incubation period, but plaque tissue (like benign tumors) released 10-100 ng DNA/ml during this period.

Biochemical and morphological studies of the short and long term survival of isolated nerve-endings.

The respiratory rate, potassium, amino acid, ATP and phosphocreatine content of cortical synaptosomes were measured over periods from one hour to 5 days. Incubation medium or tissue culture medium at 37 degrees C was employed. In suspensions, synaptosomes show diminished levels of all these parameters after 3 or 4 h, but synaptosome beds showed no loss of potassium, ATP or phosphocreatine at this time.
