Methods: This is a 6-year follow-up report of a randomized placebo-controlled trial, in which 185 infants hospitalized for respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis were treated with early initiated, high-dose inhaled beclomethasone (n = 86) or placebo (n = 99) for 3 months.
Objective: Respiratory syncytial virus lower respiratory tract infection is the most frequent cause of respiratory insufficiency necessitating mechanical ventilation in infants during the winter season. Recently, we presented a new animal model to show that mechanical ventilation aggravates respiratory syncytial virus-induced pulmonary inflammation by distinct mechanisms. We now use this model to study whether low tidal volume mechanical ventilation causes less ventilator-induced lung injury in the presence of respiratory syncytial virus lower respiratory tract infection.

Generation of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) in blood is driven by cell-associated enzymes, whereas conversion of AMP to adenosine is largely mediated by soluble enzymes. The identities of the enzymes responsible for these activities in whole blood of neonates have been defined in this study and contrasted to adult blood.
