In the third year of pre-clinical medicine (known as Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos at the University of Cambridge), students have the opportunity to lead a primary research project on clinically relevant anatomy, often involving donor dissection. This descriptive study used a cross-sectional survey to explore the effects of undertaking an anatomical research project on students' attitudes, interests, and a variety of academic and professional skills. Of 45 students who were invited to participate in this study, 40 responded.

Introduction: Neck of femur (NOF) fractures constitute a significant proportion of the workload of orthopaedic departments, with approximately 65 000 admissions across the UK annually. There are various surgical procedures available to repair NOF fractures and each is associated with numerous intraoperative and perioperative risks. Informed consent is an essential part of the workup when planning to undertake any surgical procedure, whereby the risks and benefits of surgery are discussed with the patient, so they are able to make decisions about their care.

Background: The direct anterior approach (DA) is a recognised approach for performing a total hip replacement (THR). Proponents cite improved recovery times, lower pain levels and improved patient satisfaction in the early post operative period. The procedure can be performed in the supine or lateral position.

We conducted a prospective, randomised controlled trial comparing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using middle third patellar tendon graft (PT) to synthetic Leeds-Keio (LK) ligament. The patients were randomised (26 PT, 24 LK). Subjective knee function was classified (Lysholm, Tegner activity, IKDC scores), laxity was measured (Lachman test, Stryker laxometer), and functional ability was assessed (one-hop test).

This study examines the association between postoperative coronal tibiofemoral alignment and revision surgery in knee arthroplasty. We retrospectively reviewed the case notes and post-operative long-leg radiographs of 197 Kinemax knee arthroplasty with mean follow-up of 9 years (SD 2.2).

Many procedures have been described for the correction of congenital dislocation of the patella. Most operations entail extensive soft tissue releases through curved skin incisions. A modification of the Langenskiold and Ritsila procedure is described.

Isolated lesser trochanter fractures are a rare presentation of hip fractures in the elderly. Classically, lesser trochanter fractures in adults are associated with tumours and result from little or no trauma. We present three elderly osteoporotic ladies who sustained isolated fractures of the lesser trochanter secondary to a definite history of trauma.

Meniscal repair is a common procedure that can be performed by the inside-out, outside-in, and all-inside techniques. The all-inside technique using the meniscal arrow is increasingly popular. We report a case in which a broken segment of a meniscal arrow was found on exploration of a subcutaneous swelling around the knee three weeks following meniscal repair.

Several aspects of the management of displaced supracondylar fractures in children remain controversial. Displaced supracondylar humeral fractures (Type III) in children have traditionally been considered orthopaedic emergencies. Recent studies have suggested that closed Type III supracondylar fractures without vascular compromise may be treated in a delayed manner without compromise to functional and cosmetic outcome.
