This was a prospective, multicenter study designed to evaluate the utility of MDCT in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients scheduled for elective coronary angiography (CA) using different MDCT systems from different manufacturers. Twenty national sites prospectively enrolled 367 patients between July 2004 and June 2006. Computed tomography (CT) was performed using a standardized/optimized scan protocol for each type of MDCT system (> or =16 slices) and compared with quantitative CA performed within 2 weeks of MDCT.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is an alternative method for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA), which acts on pain through a double action: anti-inflammatory and synovial fluid (SF) visco-supplementation. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), utilizing specific sequences, is a valid method for studying the initial phase of chondral damage. The analysis of the data, obtained through the intensity of values taken by positioning Region of Interest (ROIs) within the lesion, determining the differences before and after treatment with HA injected into the knee.

We aimed to demonstrate that coronary CT angiography (cCTA) can be used to non-invasively study the effect of hemodynamic factors in the pathophysiology of plaque formation. cCTA data of 73 patients were analyzed. All detected plaques were classified according to location (bifurcation, non-branching segment), configuration (eccentric, concentric), orientation (myocardial, lateral, epicardial side of the vessel wall), and composition (calcified, mixed, non-calcified).

In the elderly, the chest without evident pathology is characterized by findings that occupy a sort of "no man's land" between the normal and the pathologic. Aging results in physiologic modifications that must be recognized so as not to be interpreted erroneously as pathologies. On the other hand, the elderly tend to become ill more frequently and multipathologies are more frequent.

The utilization of 2-[fluorine 18] fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) in combination with computed tomography (CT) in the assessment of gynecologic malignancies has been rapidly growing in recent years; however, its role in clinical practice has yet to be established. A number of pitfalls are commonly encountered, including normal physiologic activity in bowel loops and blood vessels, or focal retained activity in ureters and urinary bladder. Increased uptake has also been reported in many benign pelvic processes and in premenopausal patients; endometrial activity changes cyclically, whereas increased ovarian uptake may be functional.

Objective: The clinical feasibility of oxygen-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lung may benefit from the use of a simple gas delivery method. In this study, the oxygen-induced T1 change of the lung obtained using a closed O(2) delivery system was compared with that obtained by a conventional nontight face mask.

Material And Methods: Twenty-three healthy subjects (15 men, 8 women, mean age = 25 years, age range = 20-35 years) underwent oxygen-enhanced MRI of the lung using a closed O(2) delivery system composed by a tightly fitting face mask and a 60-L reservoir bag (equipment type A: n = 13, 9 men, 4 women, mean age = 24.

Early diagnosis of peritoneal spread in malignant disease is essential to prevent unnecessary laparotomies and to select the patients in whom complete cytoreduction is feasible. Although anatomic imaging is the mainstay for evaluating peritoneal seeding, small neoplastic implants can be difficult to detect with CT and MR imaging. FDG PET-CT has the potential to improve detection of peritoneal metastases as lesion conspicuity is high at PET due to low background activity and fused PET-CT offers the combined benefits of anatomic and functional imaging.

Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) can be used to quantify morphological features and investigate structure/function relationship in COPD. This approach allows a phenotypical definition of COPD patients, and might improve our understanding of disease pathogenesis and suggest new therapeutical options. In recent years, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has also become potentially suitable for the assessment of ventilation, perfusion and respiratory mechanics.

The imaging of brain haemodynamics and its applications are generating growing interest. By providing quantitative measurements of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral blood volume (CBV), dynamic perfusion computed tomography (p-CT) allows visualisation of cerebral autoregulation mechanisms and represents a fast, available and reliable imaging option for assessing cerebral perfusion. Thanks to its feasibility in emergency settings, p-CT is considered most useful, in combination with CT angiography, in acute ischaemic patients, as it is able to provide a fast and noninvasive assessment of cerebral perfusion impairment.

Calcium deposition along the coronary artery walls is a surrogate biomarker for atherosclerosis, and its presence in the coronary arteries could reflect the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) High coronary artery calcium score (CACS) correlates with advanced disease and a higher likelihood of coronary stenoses. Many studies have supported the role of CACS as a screening tool for CAD. Historically, CACS was introduced with electron beam computed tomography (EBCT), but in the last 30 years, many changes have occurred in CT, where the development of multidetector spiral technology has made reliable the noninvasive study of the heart and coronary arteries.
