View Article and Find Full Text PDFDopaminergic neurons express a heteromer composed of the dopamine D3 receptor and the α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, the D3R-nAChR heteromer, activated by both nicotine and dopamine D2 and D3 receptors agonists, such as quinpirole, and crucial for dopaminergic neuron homeostasis. We now report that D3R-nAChR heteromer activity is potentiated by 17-β-estradiol which acts as a positive allosteric modulator by binding a specific domain on the α4 subunit of the nicotinic receptor protomer. In mouse dopaminergic neurons, in fact, 17-β-estradiol significantly increased the ability of nicotine and quinpirole in promoting neuron dendritic remodeling and in protecting neurons against the accumulation of α-synuclein induced by deprivation of glucose, with a mechanism that does not involve the classical estrogen receptors.

Objective: To assess the prevalence and describe the clinical manifestations of FMD with elderly and younger onset and their relationship with demographical and clinical variables.
Our recent study revealed that fluorescent lamp light can penetrate deep into the brain of mice and rats leading to the development of typical histological characteristics associated with Parkinson's disease such as the loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. Monochromatic LED lights were thus used in this work to deepen our knowledge on the effects of the major wavelength peaks of fluorescent light on mouse and human dopaminergic cells. In particular, we exposed immortalized dopaminergic MN9D neuronal cells, primary cultures of mouse mesencephalic dopaminergic cells and human dopaminergic neurons differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) to different LED light wavelengths.

This study describes three cases of patients with severe acquired brain injury who were receiving speech therapy for recovering dysphagia and dysarthria but showed worsening of these symptoms after receiving BoNT treatment for motor spasticity. To increase clinicians' knowledge of these adverse effects, we present our cases and explore their significance to avoid major complications such as aspiration pneumonia.

From a diagnostic point of view, a UIP pattern related to ARDs may display imaging and pathological features able to distinguish it from that related to IPF, such as the "straight-edge" sign at HRCT and lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates at histologic specimens. Multidisciplinary approach (MDD), involving at least pulmonologist, rheumatologist and radiologist, is fundamental in the differential diagnosis process, but MDD is also required in the evaluation of severity, progression and response to treatment, that is based on the combination of changes in symptoms, pulmonary function trends, and, in selected patients, serial CT evaluation.

In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, we evaluated the efficacy of an individualized technique of subcutaneous injection of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) targeted (SjBoT) to the occipital or trigeminal skin area in non-responder patients with chronic migraine (CM). Patients who had not previously responded to at least two treatments of intramuscular injections of BoNT-A were randomly assigned (2:1) to receive two subcutaneous administrations of BoNT-A (up to 200 units) with the SjBoT injection paradigm or placebo.
