Background: Melioidosis, a life-threatening infection caused by the gram negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, can involve almost any organ. Bone and joint infections (BJI) are a recognised, but incompletely defined, manifestation of melioidosis that are associated with significant morbidity and mortality in resource-limited settings.

Methodology/principal Findings: We identified all individuals with BJI due to B.

Background Late gadolinium enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is an effective and reproducible method for characterizing myocardial infarction. However, gadolinium-based contrast agents are contraindicated in patients with acute and chronic renal insufficiency. In addition, several recent studies have noted tissue deposition of free gadolinium in patients who have undergone serial contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study proposes a novel soft robotic model that replicates patient-specific AS conditions using 3D-printed heart anatomy and specialized robotic sleeves to mimic the disease's effects on heart function.
  • * This model improves the evaluation of new transcatheter aortic valves by providing more accurate simulations of hemodynamics and cardiac function compared to traditional methods, with potential applications in medical device development and clinical planning.

Purpose: The noninvasive measurement of biological tissue elasticity is an evolving technology that enables the robust characterization of soft tissue mechanics for a wide array of biomedical engineering and clinical applications. We propose, design, and implement here a new MRI technique termed asynchronous magnetic resonance elastography (aMRE) that pushes the measurement technology toward a driverless implementation. This technique can be added to clinical MRI scanners without any additional specialized hardware.

Preclinical models of aortic stenosis can induce left ventricular pressure overload and coarsely control the severity of aortic constriction. However, they do not recapitulate the haemodynamics and flow patterns associated with the disease. Here we report the development of a customizable soft robotic aortic sleeve that can mimic the haemodynamics and biomechanics of aortic stenosis.

A femoral traction splint is a mechanical device that uses traction to align and provide stability to femoral fractures. The use of this device has many benefits however there is still limited availability in low- and middle-income countries. This article provides the reader with a step by step guide to improvise a femoral traction splint built from recyclable materials readily available in most hospitals.

Task demonstrability defines the criteria that, when met, facilitate the effective exchange of knowledge within a problem-solving group. The extent to which those criteria are met should vary as a consequence of the relevant experiences that members have prior to entering the group. We investigate whether group members' ability to coordinate with one another is facilitated by their prior task-related experiences.

Background: Metal artifact reduction sequence (MARS) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been recommended as a cross-sectional imaging modality in clinical evaluation of adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs) in metal-on-metal (MoM) patients and metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) patients with taper corrosion. The aim of the study was to compare MARS MRI characteristics of ALTR in MoM total hip arthroplasty (THA) with ALTR in MoP THA with modular taper corrosion.

Methods: A total of 197 patients with ALTR were evaluated: 86 patients with MoM THA; 37 MoP patients with head-neck taper corrosion; and 74 MoP patients with neck-stem dual taper corrosion.

Background: Adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs), initially described as a complication of metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA), have also become an important risk factor for implant failure requiring revision surgery in metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) THA due to modular taper corrosion. This study aims to report early complication rates and outcomes as well as potential risk factors for a re-revision.

Methods: A total of 252 consecutive THA patients who underwent revision for ALTR were reviewed.

Psychologists are key team members in the delivery of integrated behavioral healthcare. Healthcare reform has supported a shift toward a team-based, interdisciplinary model of service delivery, with increasing emphasis on primary care services, prevention, and health promotion. In conjunction with this shift has been a greater focus on psychosocial problems and social determinants of health, particularly childhood adversity.

Objective: This study examined CPS involvement of children surviving the CMF of a sibling as well as predictors of subsequent CPS reports.

Method: Department of Human Services and Child Death Review Board data about children who died from a CMF during 1993-2003 ( = 416) and their siblings in the state of Oklahoma were used to examine CPS involvement and predictors of subsequent CPS reports for surviving siblings.

Results: Surviving siblings of a victim of a CMF experienced substantial CPS involvement; 81% of the original victims had siblings who were subsequently reported to CPS ( = 1,840).

Background: University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center has offered Interdisciplinary Training Program (ITP) for Child Abuse and Neglect since 1987. However, there are limited evaluations on multidisciplinary/interprofessional training for early professionals in the field of child abuse and neglect.

Objective: This study aimed to examine the effects of the ITP on young professionals in developing their careers and taking leadership roles in the field of child abuse and neglect.

Background: Opioid use is a public health crisis in the United States and an area of increased focus in orthopaedic surgery. The aim of this study is to investigate whether preoperative opioid use had any effect on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) before and after total hip arthroplasty (THA).

Methods: A total of 389 patients with THA with both preoperative and postoperative PROMs were reviewed: (1) 76 patients with preoperative opioid use (24%) and (2) 237 patients without preoperative opioid use (76%).

We present findings from a study of outcomes of residential treatment for people who have mental illness, primarily schizophrenia-spectrum and bipolar disorders. The study assesses a range of individual variables before and after participation in the program, to examine clinical and personal recovery and facilitate program improvement. To our knowledge, it is the longest ongoing outcomes study (15+ years) of its kind.

We describe the course of an 84-year-old lady with acute calculous cholecystitis. She was unable to have a cholecystectomy due to multiple comorbidities including morbid obesity, type 2 diabetes, Guillain-Barrè syndrome, chronic sacral pressure ulcer, and severe cardiac disease. Conservative treatment with intravenous antibiotics was initially successful; however, she subsequently re-presented with an empyema of the gallbladder.

The number of HIV cases attributed to heterosexual contact and the proportion of women among HIV positive individuals has increased worldwide. Russia is a country with the highest rates of newly diagnosed HIV infections in the region, and the infection spreads beyond traditional risk groups. While young women are affected disproportionately, knowledge of HIV risk behaviors in women in the general population remains limited.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can produce adverse outcomes; maternal smoking compounds this risk. We examined prevalence of smoking and associations between smoking and alcohol use in Russian women of childbearing age ( = 648). Smoking was reported by 35% of nonpregnant and 14% of pregnant women.

Background: Alcohol is often involved in hospital-treated self-harm. Therefore it is important to establish the role of alcohol in self-harm as well as to identify associated factors, in order to best inform service provision.

Methods: Data on self-harm presentations to hospital emergency departments in Ireland and Northern Ireland from April 2012 to December 2013 were analysed.

An estimated 10% to 20% of youth in primary care exhibit behavioral symptoms and may go underdetected. Most screeners identify risk base of symptoms alone, irrespective of functional impairment. To address this issue, the Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 (PSC-17), a widely used symptom screener, was combined with functional impairment and current behavioral services enrollment items to form the Pediatric Behavioral Health Screen (PBHS) and assessed compared to the full Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL).
