A new role under sortilin's belt in cancer.

The neurotensin receptor-3 also known as sortilin was the first member of the small family of vacuolar protein sorting 10 protein domain (Vps10p) discovered two decades ago in the human brain. The expression of sortilin is not confined to the nervous system but sortilin is ubiquitously expressed in many tissues. Sortilin has multiple roles in the cell as a receptor or a co-receptor, in protein transport of many interacting partners to the plasma membrane, to the endocytic pathway and to the lysosomes for protein degradation.

Sortilin mediates the release and transfer of exosomes in concert with two tyrosine kinase receptors.

The transfer of exosomes containing both genetic and protein materials is necessary for the control of the cancer cell microenvironment to promote tumor angiogenesis. The nature and function of proteins found in the exosomal cargo, and the mechanism of their action in membrane transport and related signaling events are not clearly understood. In this study, we demonstrate, in human lung cancer A549 cells, that the exosome release mechanism is closely linked to the multifaceted receptor sortilin (also called neurotensin receptor 3).

[The Lady Windermere syndrome: clinical and bacteriological data and progress in seven cases].

Described by Reich and Johnson in 1992 [2], the Lady Windermere syndrome occurs exclusively in non-smoking women over the age of 60 years, without significant pre-existing pulmonary disease. It comprises bronchial dilatation, typically in the middle lobe and lingula, together with secondary infection by atypical mycobacteria (Mycobacterium avium in the first cases). Among the 17 cases of atypical mycobacterial infection that we have seen in the past 14 years, there were seven cases of this syndrome.

Rare form of semi-invasive aspergillosis in immunocompetent patient: case report.

Chronic necrotizing or semi-invasive aspergillosis represents a disease commonly occurred in patients with mild immunodeficiency. We report a case of chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis in immunocompetent patient without underlying disease. The discovery of the disease was made accidentally, by finding a nodular opacity on a routine chest X-ray.

Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 directly regulates murine neurogenesis.

Neural stem cells (NSCs) are slowly dividing astrocytes that are intimately associated with capillary endothelial cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the brain. Functionally, members of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family can stimulate neurogenesis as well as angiogenesis, but it has been unclear whether they act directly via VEGF receptors (VEGFRs) expressed by neural cells, or indirectly via the release of growth factors from angiogenic capillaries. Here, we show that VEGFR-3, a receptor required for lymphangiogenesis, is expressed by NSCs and is directly required for neurogenesis.

Randomized follow-up study of resected NSCLC patients: conventional versus 18F-DG coincidence imaging.

The aim of this study was to compare the utility of gamma camera using a coincidence detection system imaging (CDET) with 18-fluorodeoxyglucose to conventional imaging techniques in the detection of recurrence of non-small cell lung cancer. Sixty-nine patients were randomized into two groups for follow-up after surgery from October 2000 to December 2002. Each patient was evaluated every 6 months by conventional technique imaging in group A (n=33) or CDET imaging in group B (n=36) over two years.

[Age and management decisions in patients with primary lung cancer].

Introduction: Therapeutic decisions are difficult in elderly patients because of the heterogeneity of this population. Our objective was to evaluate the role of age in the management of patients suffering from primary lung cancer seen in the department of respiratory diseases of the Limoges regional teaching hospital between 2002 and 2004.

Methods: A cross sectional study analysed the management of 363 patients suffering from primary lung cancer.

Use of both CD63 up regulation and IgE down regulation for the flow cytometric analysis of allergen induced basophil activation. Definition of an activation index.

Objective And Design: The aim of this study was to compare the use of a late (CD63) and an early (IgE) marker of basophil activation in the flow cytometric diagnosis of beta-lactam induced allergic hypersensitivity reactions.

Subjects: Twelve patients who had had a clear cut betalactam induced immediate reaction and 16 controls were selected, as well as 11 patients who had had an immediate reaction to bee or wasp stings.

Methods: Leukocyte suspensions were incubated with allergen dilutions as well as 2 positive controls (anti-IgE and NFormyl- Methionyl-Leucyl-Phenylalanine (fMLP)).

[Investigation of allergic reactions to platinum salts].

Introduction: We report two cases occurring in 2004 of patients being treated for pleural mesothelioma with a combination of cisplatin or carboplatin and pemetrexed. Investigation by skin tests and flow cytometry confirmed the clinical diagnosis in both cases.

Case Reports: Case 1: a man of 62 developed, after 12 courses of cisplatin-pemetrexed, an anaphylactic reaction 5 minutes after the infusion of cisplatin.

[Pleural metastases of sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma].

Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma is a rare tumor recently described. The histological presentation can be confused with certain soft tissue benign tumors and certain sarcomas. Metastatic spread is usually late in the natural course of the disease.

[Economic analysis of home based versus hospital outpatient chemotherapy in stage IV non small cell lung cancer].

Background: French law and government decisions have induced new development for home base treatments. The objective was to compare cost of home base chemotherapy (HBC) versus outpatient infusions, for non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods: 10 patients were selected in each category.

Objective: Among obstetricians and midwives, estimate the percentage of smokers, appraise the proportion of medical professionals who mention the subject of nicotine addiction to their pregnant patients, and assess the quality of the information delivered to patients as well as their own experience in the field of tobacology.

Patients And Methods: Between February and March 2002, 188 postal questionnaires were sent to obstetricians and gynecologists, midwives and midwife students of public hospitals in Limousin and private clinics in Limoges.

Results: The response rate was 75,5% (142 answers) and the median age was 37 years old (20-59).

According to physician, Aspirin and NSAIDS hypersensitivity are causing three major problems: how to make the diagnosis? Which treatment are to he given to these patients? What kind of anti-inflammatory drugs are to be prescribed? For these last three years, several articles regarding these matters were being published.

Assessment of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose dual-head gamma camera in asbestos lung diseases.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18FDG) imaging via coincidence detection emission tomography (CDET) in identifying malignant lesions in subjects exposed to asbestos. A total of 30 patients exposed to asbestos underwent 18FDG-CDET between January 2000 and June 2003. A CDET scan of the thorax and abdomen was performed 60 min after injection of 18FDG in fasting patients, and results were obtained in slices in three axes.

[Feasibility of administering Tegeline at home. Retrospective study of efficacy, safety and tolerance].

Objective: To demonstrate the feasibility of administration Tegeline at home from a point of view of efficacy, safety, tolerance, to validate the pertinence of the selection and the training of patients who could benefit from this type of administration and to assess the long term efficacy and safety.

Method: This retrospective study was conducted in patients exhibiting primary immune deficiency and formerly treated with intravenous immunoglobulins at least six months in hospital settings, trained by the centre for the training of children in the home (Centre de formation au traitement à domicile de l'enfant--CFTDE) and having received at least one administration of Tegeline at home from January 1st 2000. Tegeline contains a mean of 97.

[Clinical and biological surveillance after the cessation of Hymenoptera venom desensitization].

107 patients have discontinued Hymenoptera venom immunotherapy between 1988 and 2000. 31 have been seen again with intradermal tests with IgEs, and 81 responded to a questionnaire. Intradermal reactions and IgEs decrease together significantly during immunotherapy and then persist at low level during three years.

[Respiratory effects of risperidone? A prospective study].

Risperidone is an atypical neuroleptic which has been incriminated as a cause of respiratory symptoms. The purpose of this prospective study was to assess over a three-month period the respiratory status of patients free of allergic or respiratory disease treated with risperidone. Thirty-nine patients were enrolled.

[Prevalence of exercise-induced asthma in school children].

Background: Although asthma is the most common pulmonary condition in pediatrics, the incidence of exercise-induced asthma (EIA) in school children is not well documented and few studies have been devoted to the condition. There are considerable variations in morbidity and mortality between countries. This study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of EIA in children in the 6th grade (11-14 year-olds) in one French department (Haute-Vienne) and to identify undiagnosed cases.
