Background: Smoking influence on poststroke prognosis remains controversial. These conflicting results could be due to some residual confounding factors not fully considered in previous studies, including social deprivation. This study aimed to assess the joint impact of deprivation and smoking on functional outcomes after ischemic stroke.

Article Synopsis
  • Social deprivation negatively impacts the 1-year survival rates of patients with ischemic stroke, with higher mortality observed in deprived individuals compared to those who are not deprived.
  • The study involved 1,540 patients, using the EPICES score to evaluate individual social deprivation and found no significant difference in mortality within the first 90 days but a marked excess in mortality from 90 days to 12 months for deprived patients.
  • In patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, social deprivation did not influence 12-month mortality, indicating that specific post-stroke care may be necessary for those with ischemic strokes who are socially deprived.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the EPICES questionnaire, which measures social deprivation (precariousness), in different regions of France, including mainland France, French West Indies, and French Guiana.
  • Using data from the INDIA study, which examined how social inequalities affect stroke patients, researchers analyzed 1,553 participants with a focus on Differential Item Functioning (DIF) across regions.
  • Five specific items showed significant DIF, indicating varying interpretations based on local contexts, but overall, the EPICES score remained a reliable indicator of social deprivation despite these differences.

Aims: Mutations in PRKAG2, the gene encoding for the γ2 subunit of 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), are responsible for an autosomal dominant glycogenosis with a cardiac presentation, associating hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), ventricular pre-excitation (VPE), and progressive heart block. The aim of this study was to perform a retrospective time-to-event study of the clinical manifestations associated with PRKAG2 mutations.

Methods And Results: A cohort of 34 patients from 9 families was recruited between 2001 and 2010.

Background And Purpose: Although there is growing and convincing evidence that socially deprived patients are at higher risk of stroke and worse outcomes, it remains controversial whether or not they suffer more severe stroke. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of social deprivation on initial clinical severity in patients with stroke.

Methods: A total of 1536 consecutive patients with an acute first-ever stroke (both ischaemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage) were prospectively enrolled from six French study centers.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of area deprivation and primary care facilities on colorectal adenoma detection and on colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence in a French well-defined population before mass screening implementation. The study population included all patients aged 20 years or more living in Côte d'Or (France) with either colorectal adenoma or invasive CRC first diagnosed between 1995 and 2002 and who were identified from the Burgundy Digestive Cancer Registry and the Côte d'Or Polyp Registry. Area deprivation was assessed using the European deprivation index on the basis of the smallest French area available (Ilots Regroupés pour l'Information Statistique).

Background: Unlike experimental results, epidemiologic studies that used dietary questionnaires were not convincing as regards the relations between dietary fatty acids (FAs) and risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). The FA composition of adipose tissue, which is considered to be an indicator of dietary intake over 2-3 y because of the slow turnover rate, appears promising but has so far been rarely used to explore the relation between CRC and exogenous or endogenously produced FAs.

Objective: In this case-control study, we aimed to investigate associations between risk of CRC and the FA composition of subcutaneous adipose tissue and product-to-precursor ratios as indexes of enzymatic activities.

Background: Chronic inflammation is a key feature of colorectal cancer (CRC), meaning that inflammatory biomarkers may be useful for its diagnosis. In particular, high neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) expression has been reported in CRC. Thus, we investigated whether serum NGAL and NGAL/MMP-9 could be potential biomarkers for the early detection of CRC.

Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the responsiveness to change of a generic [the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36)] and a specific health-related quality of life questionnaire [the Lupus Quality if Life questionnaire (LupusQoL)] according to SLE patients' self-reported changes in health status.

Methods: In a cohort of 185 SLE patients, quality of life (QoL) was measured three times at 3 month intervals by the LupusQoL and SF-36 questionnaires. Anchors for responsiveness were defined by patients' global assessment of disease impact according to changes in a visual analogue scale (VAS), a 7-point Likert scale and a 0-3 scale of five patient-reported symptoms.

Background: Several randomized trials have shown a reduction of colorectal cancer mortality by screening using guaiac-based faecal occult blood tests. However, little is known on the long-term effect of screening at the population level in everyday practice.

Methods: Small-sized geographic areas including a total of 91,199 individuals were allocated to either biennal screening using the Hemoccult-II test or no screening.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the 30 chronic conditions specifically listed by the French healthcare system as a long-term disease (affections de longue durée [ALD]) for which the main health insurance fund (Caisse nationale d'assurance maladie des travailleurs salariés [CNAMTS]) provides full (100%) coverage of healthcare costs. The CNAMTS insures 87% of the French population (52,359,912 of the 60,028,292 inhabitants). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the direct and indirect medical costs of MS among the entire population insured by the CNAMTS in France in 2004.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined comorbidities in a large French cohort of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), focusing on those diagnosed before age 45 and over a decade-long period.
  • Around 3% of these patients had comorbid conditions at the time of their MS diagnosis, primarily categorized into psychiatric, autoimmune, cardiovascular, cancer, and metabolic diseases.
  • It was found that MS patients with comorbidities were diagnosed at an older age compared to those without, and that psychiatric disorders and diabetes were notably more common among MS patients than in the general population.
