In this study, we present for the first time the incorporation of two distinct nonsymmetrical squaraines (SQ) into hierarchically porous Hafnium-based UiO-66 Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), each functionalized with various moieties, for application as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy. SQs are meticulously designed to feature COOH moieties for interaction with the MOF's metallic cluster and bromine atoms to enhance intersystem crossing and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The distinct central functionalizations, one with squaric acid and the other with a dicyanovinyl-substituted squaric acid derivative, result in unique geometric conformations.

Ce-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently gained scientific interest, since Ce is the most abundant rare-earth element in the Earth's crust and since their synthesis has some advantages, including first of all their redox activity, the high porosity of these crystalline materials, and Ce availability. In particular, Ce(iv)-based MOFs, such as Ce-UiO-66 and Ce-UiO-67, are synthesised under mild conditions. For most applications, the presence of functional groups in the frameworks is needed; in this context, linkers containing N-functionalities have been highlighted, as they allow for the incorporation of a large variety of metal cations.

Background And Objective: This article uses three different probabilistic convolutional architectures applied to ultrasound image analysis for grading Fatty Liver Content (FLC) in Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) patients. Steatosis is a new silent epidemic and its accurate measurement is an impelling clinical need, not only for hepatologists, but also for experts in metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. This paper aims to provide a robust comparison between different uncertainty quantification strategies to identify advantages and drawbacks in a real clinical setting.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study addresses the need for a reliable, non-invasive method to quantify fatty liver content (FLC) for better monitoring of liver disease, as existing ultrasound assessments are inconsistent and subjective.
  • - Researchers developed the Steatoscore2.0, a multiparametric algorithm that combines five ultrasound parameters to evaluate FLC, using Magnetic Resonance (MR) values as a benchmark, with strong correlations and low error rates demonstrated in tests.
  • - The Steatoscore2.0 shows high sensitivity and specificity in identifying significant fatty liver content, making it an effective, affordable, and user-friendly tool compared to current methods like Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP) analysis.

miRNAs circulating in whole serum and HBsAg-particles are differentially expressed in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and HBeAg-negative-HBV infection (ENI); their profiles are unknown in chronic hepatitis D (CHD). Serum- and HBsAg-associated miRNAs were analyzed in 75 subjects of 3 well-characterized groups (CHB 25, CHD 25, ENI 25) using next-generation sequencing (NGS). Overall miRNA profiles were consonant in serum and HBsAg-particles but significantly different according to the presence of hepatitis independently of Hepatitis D Virus (HDV)-co-infection.

Objectives: Gender equality in the healthcare workforce has been a topic of discourse for many decades. In dental academia, women's representation of enrolled students and faculty has risen consistently since the 1980s. However, women in faculty leadership positions may still be lagging when compared to men.

Lifestyle modification is the primary intervention to control NAFLD progression, but despite evidence-based effectiveness it is difficult to distinguish the benefits of nutrition from physical activity and the optimal diet composition is not established. Macronutrients as saturated fatty acids, sugars and animal proteins are harmful in NAFLD and the Mediterranean Diet reducing sugar, red meat and refined carbohydrates and increasing unsaturated-fatty-acids was reported to be beneficial. However one size cannot fit all since NAFLD is a multifaceted syndrome encompassing many diseases of unknown etiologies, different clinical severity and outcomes.

The reaction mechanism of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) production over ZrO from CO and CHOH is well-known, but the level of understanding has not improved in the last decade. Most commonly, the reaction mechanism has been explored in the gas phase, whilst DMC production occurs in the liquid phase. To overcome this contradiction, we exploited ATR-IR spectroscopy to study DMC formation over ZrO in the liquid phase.

Hepatitis B "e" antigen (HBeAg) negative chronic hepatitis B (CHB), 40 years since discovery in the Mediterranean area, has become the most prevalent form of HBV-induced liver disease worldwide and a major health care burden caused by HBV infection. A great deal of knowledge accumulated over the last decades provides consistent evidence on the bimodal dynamics of the expression of structural and non-structural forms of the viral core proteins which associate with different virologic and clinic-pathologic outcomes of HBV infection. In absence of serum HBeAg, the presence and persistence of HBV replication causes and maintains virus-related liver injury.

The currently available antiviral treatments (Peg-Interferon-α and Nucleos(t)ide Analogues, NA) for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) achieve a functional cure (serum HBsAg and HDV-DNA clearance) of HBV infection in a limited number of patients. Nevertheless, the continuous pharmacological suppression of viral replication by NA halts liver disease progression lowering the risk of HCC development and improving the survival. In the near future, to fully exploit the potential of old and new drugs for HBV treatment a personalized approach to the patients will be required according to an accurate definition of their virologic, immunologic and clinical profile.

Metabolic impairments and liver and adipose depots alterations were reported in subjects with Alzheimer's disease (AD), highlighting the role of the liver-adipose-tissue-brain axis in AD pathophysiology. The gut microbiota might play a modulating role. We investigated the alterations to the liver and white/brown adipose tissues (W/BAT) and their relationships with serum and gut metabolites and gut bacteria in a 3xTg mouse model during AD onset (adulthood) and progression (aging) and the impact of high-fat diet (HFD) and intranasal insulin (INI).

HCN in the gas form is considered as a primary nitrogen source for the synthesis of prebiotic molecules in extraterrestrial environments. Nevertheless, the research mainly focused on the reactivity of HCN and its derivatives in aqueous systems, often using external high-energy supply in the form of cosmic rays or high energy photons. Very few studies have been devoted to the chemistry of HCN in the gas phase or at the gas/solid interphase, although they represent the more common scenarios in the outer space.

Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease is a major cause of chronic pathologies, of which maternal obesity is a frequent risk factor. Gut wall and microbiota, visceral fat, and liver form a pre-systemic network for substrates and pro-inflammatory factors entering the body, undergoing accelerated maturation in early-life when the weaning reaction, i.e.

The hierarchization of zeolites to overcome the major drawbacks related to molecular diffusion limitation in micropores is a popular concept in heterogeneous catalysis. Despite the constant increase of new synthesis strategies to produce such hierarchical systems, the deep knowledge of their structural arrangement and how the zeolitic lattice is organized in a multilevel porous system is often missing. This information is essential to design a structure, tuning the porosity and the distribution of easily accessible active sites, and successively controlling the catalytic properties.

Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), formerly named "nonalcoholic fatty liver disease" occurs in about one-third of the general population of developed countries worldwide and behaves as a major morbidity and mortality risk factor for major causes of death, such as cardiovascular, digestive, metabolic, neoplastic and neuro-degenerative diseases. However, progression of MAFLD and its associated systemic complications occur almost invariably in patients who experience the additional burden of intrahepatic and/or systemic inflammation, which acts as disease accelerator. Our review is focused on the new knowledge about the brain-gut-liver axis in the context of metabolic dysregulations associated with fatty liver, where insulin resistance has been assumed to play an important role.

In advanced HCC, tyrosine-kinase inhibitors obtain partial responses (PR) in some patients and complete responses (CR) in a few. Better understanding of the mechanism of response could be achieved by the radiomic approach combining digital imaging and serological biomarkers (α-fetoprotein, AFP and protein induced by vitamin K absence-II, PIVKA-II) kinetics. A physic-mathematical model was developed to investigate cancer cells and vasculature dynamics in three prototype patients receiving sorafenib and/or regorafenib and applied in seven others for validation.
