Objective: Stereotactic neuromodulation, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) and responsive neurostimulation (RNS), have emerged as some of the more promising means for managing drug-resistant epilepsy. This study serves as a comprehensive analysis of DBS of the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT), centromedian thalamic nucleus (CMT), and hippocampus and RNS for seizure reduction in adult intractable epilepsy.

Methods: Following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, a systematic review was conducted of PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases from January 2000 to January 2024 to objectively assess the effectiveness of the various neuromodulation modalities on seizure reduction.

 Triploid partial molar pregnancies are not viable, and confer maternal risks including preeclampsia, hemorrhage, gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, and trophoblastic embolization. We report a case managed expectantly until 26 weeks' gestation in a patient requesting continuation of pregnancy.   This G2P1 presented with fetal anomalies indicative of triploid partial molar pregnancy.

Background: Autosomal-recessive renal tubular dysgenesis (AR-RTD) is a rare genetic disorder caused by defects in the renin-angiotensin system that manifests as fetal anuria leading to oligohydramnios and Potter sequence. Although the most common outcome is neonatal death from renal failure, pulmonary hypoplasia, and/or refractory arterial hypotension; several cases have been reported that describe survival past the neonatal period.

Methods: Herein, we report the first family with biallelic ACE variants and more than one affected child surviving past the neonatal period, as well as provide a review of the previously reported 18 cases with better outcomes.

We combined viral genome sequencing with contact tracing to investigate introduction and evolution of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 lineages in Santa Clara County, California, from 27 January to 21 March 2020. From 558 persons with coronavirus disease 2019, 101 genomes from 143 available clinical samples comprised 17 lineages, including SCC1 (n = 41), WA1 (n = 9; including the first 2 reported deaths in the United States, with postmortem diagnosis), D614G (n = 4), ancestral Wuhan Hu-1 (n = 21), and 13 others (n = 26). Public health intervention may have curtailed the persistence of lineages that appeared transiently during February and March.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread globally, with >365,000 cases in California as of 17 July 2020. We investigated the genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in Northern California from late January to mid-March 2020, using samples from 36 patients spanning nine counties and the Grand Princess cruise ship. Phylogenetic analyses revealed the cryptic introduction of at least seven different SARS-CoV-2 lineages into California, including epidemic WA1 strains associated with Washington state, with lack of a predominant lineage and limited transmission among communities.

In major depressive disorder (MDD), altered gene expression in brain cortex and blood leucocytes may be due to aberrant expression of epigenetic machinery coding genes. Some studies have reported that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is able to induce changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis in subjects with major depression. The causes of these neuroendocrine effects are unknown and deserve to be studied. The authors monitored neuroendocrine hormones in 15 subjects with major depression treated by 1-Hz rTMS on the right DLPFC and explored a correlation with mood improvement.
