Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the risk of prolonged QTc interval in patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) treated with bedaquiline in Uganda, highlighting the issue as under-researched in low-resource settings.
  • - Out of 153 participants, 39 (25.5%) exhibited prolonged QTc intervals, with significant associations found between increased body mass index (BMI) and QTc prolongation, while HIV infection appeared to offer a protective effect.
  • - The findings suggest a higher prevalence of QTc interval prolongation in DR-TB patients compared to healthy individuals, recommending regular body measurements to identify those at risk for this heart condition.

We evaluated the diagnostic performance of a qualitative stool antigen test (SAT) in individuals with dyspepsia in rural Uganda using the polymerase chain reaction-based 16S ribosomal RNA assay (16S rRNA) for nucleotide sequences for two common H. pylori-associated genes as the reference standard. We enrolled 150 adults with dyspepsia with no self-reported use of antibiotic and/or antiacid medication medications within a fortnight.

Background: Adverse drug reaction (ADR) of medications remains an obstacle to achieving optimal disease outcomes. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of ADR among Heart failure (HF) patients hospitalized at Mbarara Regional and Referral Hospital.

Method: A prospective observational study was conducted among hospitalized HF patients from November 2021 to January 2022.

Background: Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) is a recognized complication of diabetes mellitus that precedes and is a risk factor for heart failure. We aimed to determine the prevalence of LVDD and its association with body mass index in ambulatory adults with diabetes mellitus in rural Uganda.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study, over 5 months, to enroll 195 ambulatory Ugandan adults living with diabetes mellitus for at least five years at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

Background: Good adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and retention in care are essential for the effectiveness of an HIV care program. With the current increase in numbers of people living with HIV taking second-line ART in sub-Saharan Africa, there is a need to establish their treatment outcomes and the rate of loss to follow up. In this study, we determined the incidence and predictors of loss to follow up among patients taking second-line ART at an experienced HIV treatment center in southwestern Uganda.

Introduction: Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a very rare disorder of the hematopoietic stem cells which is often underdiagnosed. Its incidence is about 5 cases per million inhabitants in a year, and currently, there are only 1610 patients in the International PNH Registry. In this report, we describe a case of PNH in southwestern Uganda.

Background: The health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important treatment goal that could serve as low-cost prognostication tool in resource poor settings. We sought to validate the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) and evaluate its use as a predictor of 3 months all-cause mortality among heart failure participants in rural Uganda.

Methods: The Mbarara Heart Failure Registry Cohort study observes heart failure patients during hospital stay and in the community in rural Uganda.

Objective: We sought to estimate the incidence and predictors of all-cause mortality 6 months after heart failure hospitalization in Uganda.

Methods: Mbarara Heart Failure Registry is a cohort of patients hospitalized with a clinical diagnosis of heart failure at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Uganda. We measured serum electrolytes, cardiac markers, and echocardiograms.
